The work first discusses the detailed design of the squeezed light source which would be used for the experiment. The specific design is the doubly-resonant, traveling-wave bow-tie cavity squeezed light source with a new modified coherent sideband locking technique. The thesis describes the properties affecting the squeezing magnitudes and offers solutions which improve the gain. The first part also includes the detailed modeling of the back-scattering noise of a traveling Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO). In the second part, the thesis discusses the LIGO Squeezed Light Injection Experiment, undertaken to test squeezed light injection into a 4km interferometric gravitational wave detector. The results show the first ever measurement of squeezing enhancement in a full-scale suspended gravitational wave interferometer with Fabry-Perot arms. Further, it showed that the presence of a squeezed-light source added no additional noise in the low frequency band. The result was the best sensitivity achieved by any gravitational wave detector. The thesis is very well organized with the adequate theoretical background including basics of Quantum Optics, Quantum noise pertaining to gravitational wave detectors in various configurations, along with extensive referencing necessary for the experimental set-up. For any non-experimental scientist, this introduction is a very useful and enjoyable reading. The author is the winner of the 2013 GWIC Theses Prize.

The basic theory of GWs and laser-interferometric GW detectors, quantum noise in GW detectors, the theory of squeezed states including generation, degradation, detection, and control of squeezed states using sub-threshold optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and homodyne detectors, experimental characterization of these techniques (using periodically poled KTiOPO4 in an OPO at 1064 nm for the first time), key requirements for quantum-enhanced GW detectors, and the propagation of a squeezed state in a complex interferometer and its interaction with the interferometer field were studied. Finally, the experimental demonstration of quantum-enhancement in a prototype GW detector was performed. By injecting a squeezed vacuum field of 9.3 dB (inferred) or 7.4 ± 0.1 dB (measured) at frequencies above 3 kHz and a cutoff frequency for squeezing at 700 Hz into the antisymmetric port of the prototype GW detector in a signal-recycled Michelson interferometer configuration, the shot noise floor of the detector was reduced broadband from 7.0 x 10-7 m/viH- to 5.0 x 10-17 m/V/H while the strength of a simulated GW signal was retained, resulting in a 40% increase in signal-to-noise ratio or detector sensitivity, which is equivalent to a factor of 1.43 = 2.7 increase in GW detection rate for isotropically distributed GW sources that are confined to the frequency band in which squeezing was effective. This is the first implementation of quantum-enhancement in a prototype GW detector with suspended optics and readout and control schemes similar to those used in LIGO and Advanced LIGO. It is, therefore, a critical step toward implementation of quantum-enhancement in long baseline GW detectors.

Book excerpt: Gravitational waves are considered as ripples in the curvature of space-time and were predicted by Einstein in his general theory of relativity. Gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter which makes them very difficult to detect. However, research groups around the world are engaged in building a network of ultra sensitive ground and space based interferometers for the first detection of these signals. Their detection will open a new window in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The nature of gravitational waves is such that when incident on a particle, they stretch and squeeze the particle orthogonally thus producing a tidal strain. The strain amplitude expected for gravitational waves which may be detected on earth are of the order of hrms ~10-22 to 10-23 (over a frequency range from few Hz to a few kHz). A network of instruments based on the Michelson interferometer design currently exists around the world. These detectors are undergoing a major upgrade and once online by 2015-16 the improved sensitivity and increased sky coverage may lead to the first detection of the gravitational waves signals. The Institute for Gravitational Research in the University of Glasgow in collaboration with the Albert Einstein Institute in Hannover, Golm and the University of Cardiff has been actively involved in the research for the development of instruments and data analysis techniques to detect gravitational waves. This includes construction of a long ground based interferometer in Germany called GEO 600 (upgraded to GEO-HF) having an arm length 600 m and strong involvement in the larger detectors of the LIGO (Laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory) project in USA having arm lengths of 4 km (Operated by MIT, Boston and CALTECH, Pasadena). An upgrade to LIGO called Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) is currently under construction with significant input from the University of Glasgow. Thermal noise is one of the most significant noise sources affecting the sensitivity of the detector at a range of frequencies. Thermal noise arises due to the random fluctuations of atoms and molecules in the materials of the test mass mirrors and suspension elements, and is related to mechanical loss in these materials. The work presented in chapter 3 of this thesis is devoted to the analysis of aspects of mechanical loss and thermal noise in the final stages of the GEO suspension. GEO-600 is currently undergoing an upgrade to GEO-HF targeting sensitivity improvements in the kiloHertz region. However, the planned upgrade requires access to the vacuum tanks enclosing the fused silica suspension system. There is a risk of damaging the suspension, which has led to a repair scenario being developed in Glasgow, to reduce the downtime of the detector. An optimised design of the fused silica fibre has been proposed. A study of mechanical loss has been undertaken through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modeling techniques. The mechanical loss of the optimised fibre is estimated to be lower than the original GEO fibre by a factor of ~4. In terms of thermal noise performance the optimised fibre gives an improvement of ~1.8. The repair scenario of the monolithic suspension has led to the development of tools and welding procedures. Three prototype suspensions involving metal masses were successfully built, before fabricating the monolithic fused silica suspension in Glasgow. The work in chapter 4 focuses on the theory of photoelasticty and birefringence techniques. The production and use of various forms of polarised light has been discussed. A setup of plane and a circular polariscope using two polarisers and two-quarter wave plates has been shown. The retardation of light due to the birefringence in the sample can be measured using the Tardy method of compensation and a Babinet-Soleil compensator. Finally a discussion on the stress-optic law has shown that the relative stress in a sample can be measured once the retardance is known. The silica fibres in the aLIGO detector would be laser welded using a 100 W CO2 laser. The laser welding would lead to high temperature and development of thermal gradients. This could result in residual thermal stress in fused silica, which could lead to an additional mechanical loss. A study of mechanical and thermal stress induced in fused silica has been discussed in chapter 5 of this thesis. To understand the working of photoelastic techniques learned in chapter 4, a study of mechanical stress was undertaken by applying a load on the sample to induce temporary birefringence. The estimated values of stress showed a good agreement when compared with the theoretical predictions and FEA modelling. Thermal stress was induced in fused silica by applying a 25 W CO2 laser beam for 10 seconds and the relative stress was measured using photoelastic birefringence techniques. Thermal modelling of the stressed sample was performed using the techniques developed in FEA. The experimental values show a good agreement with the estimated 1st principal stress (FEA model) and equivalent stress. A study of thermal stress in fused silica welds has also been presented in chapter 5. Two fused silica samples were welded using CO2 laser welding and the relative stress at different points were measured. The stress in the weld region was measured to be relatively lower than other areas. At a distance of 3 mm away from the weld line the maximum stress was measured which was greater than the stress in the weld region by a factor of ~5. The work discussed in chapter 6 focuses on the study of the suspension thermal noise in aLIGO detector for applying incremental upgrades. To further enhance the sensitivity of the aLIGO detector, incremental upgrades could be applied to the suspension system to improve the thermal noise. The incremental upgrades focused on two aspects: improving the dissipation dilution factor, and obtaining a lower mechanical loss than the aLIGO baseline. Based on the results from FEA, two designs were compared, each having a suspension of length 100 cm but different stock diameter - 3mm and 5 mm. A comparison with the aLIGO baseline showed that these two models obtained a lower mechanical loss by a factor of 3.4 to 6.8. In terms of suspension thermal noise there was an improvement by factor of 2.5 to 3.7, which could lead to rise in the sensitivity of the detector by a factor of 2.5.

Book excerpt: Gravitational waves, predicted by the theory of General Relativity, are fluctuations in the curvature of space-time which arise from the asymmetric acceleration of mass. While gravitational waves have yet to be detected directly, measurements of the inspiral rate of a binary pulsar system have provided strong evidence for their existence and a world-wide effort to develop more sensitive detectors is ongoing. In addition to testing predictions of General Relativity, observation and analysis of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources will provide new insights into a wide range of phenomena including black holes, neutron stars and supernovae. Gravitational waves are quadruple in nature, and therefore produce fluctuating tidal strains on space. Long baseline gravitational wave detectors aim to measure this effect using laser interferometry to measure fluctuations in the relative separation of free masses, coated to form highly reflective mirrors and suspended as pendulums at the ends of perpindicular arms up to 4 km in length. There are currently several long baseline gravitational wave detectors in operation around the world, including the three LIGO detectors in the US, the UK/German GEO600 detector near Hannover and the French/Italian Virgo detector near Pisa. The strain expected from gravitational waves is very small, of order [~10-[superscript 22. The magnitude of the resultant displacement is such that the thermal motion of the mirrors and their suspensions forms an important limit to detector sensitivity. The level of thermal noise is related to the mechanical dissipation of the materials used in the test mass and the mirror coatings.

Book excerpt: The LIGO-Virgo network of kilometer-scale laser interferometric gravitational-wave detectors reached a major milestone with the successful operation of LIGO's fifth (S5) and Virgo's first (VSR1) science runs during 2005-2007. This thesis presents several issues related to gravitational-wave transient detection from the perspective of the joint all-sky, un-triggered burst search over S5/VSR1 data. Existing searches for gravitational-wave bursts must deal with the presence of non-Gaussian noise transients which populate the data over the majority of sensitive signal space. These events may be confused with true signals, and are the current limiting factor in search sensitivity and detection confidence for any real event. The first part of this thesis focuses on the development of tools to identify, monitor and characterize these instrumental disturbances in LIGO and Virgo data. An automated procedure is developed and applied to the S5/VSR1 search in order to safely remove noise transients from the analysis without sacrificing sensitivity by making use of the wealth of auxiliary information recorded by the detectors. The second part of this thesis focuses on the interpretation of outlier events in the context of a non-Gaussian, non-stationary background. An extensive follow-up procedure for candidate gravitational-wave events is developed and applied to a single burst outlier from the S5/VSR1 search, later revealed to be a blind simulation injected into the instruments. While the follow-up procedure correctly finds no reason to reject the candidate as a possible gravitational wave, it highlights the difficulty in making a confident detection for signals with similar waveform morphology to common instrumental disturbances. The follow-up also deals with the problem of objectively defining the significance of a single outlier event in the context of many semi-disjoint individual searches. To address this, a likelihood-ratio based unified ranking is developed and tested against the original procedures of the S5/VSR1 burst search. The new ranking shows a factor of four improvement in the statistical significance of the outlier event, and a 12% reduction using fixed thresholds and 38% reduction using a loudest event statistic for a rate upper limit on a mock signal population.
