Book excerpt: Living resources of the sea and fresh water have long been an important source of food and economic activity. With fish stocks continuing to be over-exploited, there is a clear focus on fisheries management, to which acoustic methods can and do make an important contribution. The second edition of this widely used book covers the many technological developments which have occurred since the first edition; highly sophisticated sonar and computer processing equipment offer great new opportunities and Fisheries Acoustic, 2e provides the reader with a better understanding of how to interpret acoustic observations and put them to practical use. Well known and respected authors Emphasis on practical acoustic methods Detailed coverage of a commercially and environmentally important subject A vital tool for fisheries scientists, fisheries oceanographers, environmental biologists, ecologists, population biologists, fish biologists, and marine biologists. All those involved with design and use of acoustic equipment. Book Synopsis Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Animals by : Hans Slabbekoorn
Download or read book Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Animals written by Hans Slabbekoorn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, many investigators interested in the effects of man-made sounds on animals have come to realize that there is much to gain from studying the broader literature on hearing sound and the effects of sound as well as data from the effects on humans. It has also become clear that knowledge of the effects of sound on one group of animals (e.g., birds or frogs) can guide studies on other groups (e.g., marine mammals or fishes) and that a review of all such studies together would be very useful to get a better understanding of the general principles and underlying cochlear and cognitive mechanisms that explain damage, disturbance, and deterrence across taxa. The purpose of this volume, then, is to provide a comprehensive review of the effects of man-made sounds on animals, with the goal of fulfilling two major needs. First, it was thought to be important to bring together data on sound and bioacoustics that have implications across all taxa (including humans) so that such information is generally available to the community of scholars interested in the effects of sound. This is done in Chaps. 2-5. Second, in Chaps. 6-10, the volume brings together what is known about the effects of sound on diverse vertebrate taxa so that investigators with interests in specific groups can learn from the data and experimental approaches from other species. Put another way, having an overview of the similarities and discrepancies among various animal groups and insight into the “how and why” will benefit the overall conceptual understanding, applications in society, and all future research.

Book Synopsis Acoustic Fish Reconnaissance by : I.L. Kalikhman
Download or read book Acoustic Fish Reconnaissance written by I.L. Kalikhman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-03-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, there has not been any work that systematically presents the subject of acoustic fish reconnaissance, details all major aspects of applying acoustic equipment in commercial fish reconnaissance, and offers sufficient analysis of the effectiveness of fish-finding techniques. Acoustic Fish Reconnaissance responds to this need by providing the first overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of acoustic search, detection, interpretation, and population estimation for commercial benefit. This book pays particular attention to the theory and practice of accounting surveys for quantitative estimation of biological resources and fishing conditions in traditional fishing areas. It also analyzes various applications of acoustic technique, based upon the authors' extensive investigations. The text includes the results of the applicability of fish-finding instruments, and offers recommendations on the development of improved acoustic techniques for commercial fleets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Fisheries Acoustics, Second Edition, many technological innovations and analytic advances have occurred. This revised and updated edition will cover the wide range of acoustic technology currently available as well as detailing their use for studying marine organisms, including information on sampling, survey design and data analysis. Changes that have taken place in the intervening years will be presented including: - The use of multiple frequencies to aid in classification of species. - The use of alternate platforms to increase autonomy and duration of sensor deployments. - Acoustic technology and sensor integration to aid the design of instrument packages. - Accessibility of multibeam sonars and wideband transmission pulses. Fisheries Acousics 3e will highlightthe expanded use of acoustic technologies in ecological research, ecosystem-based resource management, and monitoring applications, providing fisheries scientists with a useful update on this rapidly advancing field.
