Book Synopsis Dynamics of Rural Growth in Bangladesh by : Madhur Gautam
Download or read book Dynamics of Rural Growth in Bangladesh written by Madhur Gautam and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rural economy in Bangladesh has powerfully advanced economic growth and substantially reduced poverty, especially since 2000, but the remarkable transformation and unprecedented dynamism in rural Bangladesh remain an underexplored, underappreciated, and largely untold story. Dynamics of Rural Growth in Bangladesh: Sustaining Poverty Reduction tells that story and inquires what specific actions Bangladesh might take—given the residual poverty and persistent malnutrition—to accelerate and channel its rural dynamism to sustain the gains in eliminating poverty, achieving shared prosperity, and advancing national aspirations to achieve middle-income status. The central element of this study, undertaken with the Government of Bangladesh Planning Commission to address key questions elicited through extensive consultation, is an empirical analysis that illuminates the underlying dynamics of rural growth, particularly the role of agriculture and its relationship to the nonfarm economy. Using all sources of data available for the macro-, meso-, and microhousehold levels, the analysis provides new evidence on changes in the rural economy and the principal drivers of rural incomes. It also examines market performance for high-value agricultural products and agriculture†“nutrition linkages, based on new surveys and analysis. The resulting evidence, examined in light of the rich knowledge of rural development in Bangladesh, is used to delineate the implications for policy and the strategic priorities for sustaining future rural development, poverty reduction, food security, and nutrition. The effects of policy reforms, changes in technology, and investments in infrastructure and human capital described here, along with the persistent enterprise of rural Bangladeshi households, offer a compelling case study of how mutually reinforcing actions can trigger the highly-sought-after virtuous cycle of rural development. The findings clearly demonstrate the pro-poor nature of agricultural growth and its catalytic role in stimulating the rural nonfarm economy. They show that households have no linear or predictable pathway out of poverty; instead, they wisely employ a combination of farm and nonfarm income strategies to climb out of, and then stay out of, poverty. The results represent a strong contribution to the global thinking on rural transformation and on how agriculture in particular sustains the economic momentum that fosters poverty reduction and more widespread prosperity.
Book Synopsis The Contributions of Infrastructure to Economic Development by : Christine Kessides
Download or read book The Contributions of Infrastructure to Economic Development written by Christine Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the linkages between infrastructure and economic development based on both formal empirical research and informal case studies. The main thesis is that economic benefits result from investments in infrastructure only to the extent that they generate a sustainable flow of services valued by consumers. Thus, an analysis of infrastructures' contributions to growth must look at the impacts of services as actually perceived, not at indirect indicators that measure only aggregate provision of infrastructure capital. The paper notes that macro and industry level research , although having its limitations, suggest a positive and statistically significant relationship between infrastructure and economic output. However the conclusions derived from this research (most of which derives from developed countries) provide little specific guidance for policy. To gain more practical insights about how infrastructure contributes to economic growth and to improved quality of life, and to understand the welfare costs of inadequate or unreliable infrastructure, it is necessary to look at microeconomic evidence. Particularly interesting illustrations of these relationships are to be found in developing countries where there is wide variance in the availability and quality of infrastructure.

Book Synopsis Rural Infrastructure from a World Bank Perspective by : Louis Y. Pouliquen
Download or read book Rural Infrastructure from a World Bank Perspective written by Louis Y. Pouliquen and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rural infrastructure is critical to both economic and social development. Its absence thwarts growth and, typically, the poor are those hurt the most. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a basis for knowledge management on rural infrastructure." In the 1970s, the primary, if not the unique, objective of rural infrastructure lending was to get rural infrastructure built. However, the institutional aspects of how this infrastructure was to be built, and later how it would be operated and maintained, did not receive much attention. Only recently has poverty alleviation through employment creation become an explicit objective of rural infrastructure investments. This review tracks the poverty alleviation objective of rural infrastructure projects using three criteria: 1. whether poverty was an explicit criterion in the selection of specific sub-projects; 2. whether poverty was addressed in the pricing of rural infrastructure services; and 3. whether poverty was addressed through the creation of employment.
