Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main strategic features for the development of the electricity system in Ukraine are security, affordability and mitigation of environmental impacts. However, not all of them are equally addressed in the energy planning. The planning process is mainly based on economic and political considerations, while environmental issues are left outside the planning framework. Therefore this work is focused on the potential directions of the electricity sector development under the condition that environmental considerations are embedded in the planning. The research investigates possible paths for the system development through scenario analysis, which is rarely used approach in Ukraine. Three main scenarios have been elaborated based on the changes in crucial parameters of the system. The key strategic message that is derived from the analysis and comparison of the scenarios is that the development of the electricity system should be focused on energy efficiency of industry and households at the first place with the gradual transformation of supply system from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. The estimations show that the feasible decrease in energy intensity of two main electricity consuming sectors could bring savings of 91 TWh of electricity and decrease of CO2 emissions in 50 million tonnes annually in 20 years.

Book excerpt: This book covers new technologies and methods related to models for short-term forecasting of electricity imbalances in the IPS of Ukraine, taking into account the impact of forecasts of energy production from renewable sources on the accuracy of the imbalance forecast. The book proposed architecture and mathematical model of an artificial neural network for deep learning forecasting of short-term electricity imbalances using hourly data. Using a model to aggregate data with an hourly resolution followed by forecasting to reduce forecast error, the quasi-dynamic modeling method was used to analyze the impact of periodic generation on the network. The application of quasi-dynamic modeling also allows taking into account the system load curve, generation profile, storage system, as well as renewable energy sources (RES) operation in this area. The use of models makes it possible to achieve realistic estimates of generation for the required period. The book considers a local hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) based on different types of RES, which is more efficient than a system with one type of source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of "energy" includes methods for obtaining and using various types of energy for the needs of human society. Energy is one of the foundations for the development of modern society. The effectiveness of solving social, economic and technical problems, as well as the anthropogenic transformations of nature, is largely determined by energy production and the scale of energy production.Modern energy is not a separate industry, but it penetrates widely into other areas, in particular, chemical, transport, aerospace, construction, metallurgy, engineering, agriculture, etc. The energy sector is based on complex technical systems that are multicomponent, spatially distributed systems that during their operation are affected to a wide range of design and non-design thermomechanical loading conditions, the effects of aggressive fields and units, unauthorized influences (operator errors, terrorism, sabotage) and can reach various limit states.Complex technical systems are characterized by complex non-linear interactions between their constituent elements, complex chains (scenarios) of cause-effect relationships between hazardous, probabilistic events and processes that occur during their life. These scenarios can be implemented over complex ramified scenario trees.Ensuring the operational reliability, durability and safety of power equipment is a difficult task, which is associated with the organization of the reliability of control over the operation of power plants and ensuring optimal conditions for their operation. In this regard, we can distinguish a whole class of tasks related to the development of control systems, diagnostics and monitoring in the energy industry, which are presented in this book. Of particular relevance now is the use of UAVs in the energy sector.Particular attention must be paid to the environmental consequences of the operation of energy facilities, the main of which is significant environmental pollution in large cities and industrial areas. The development of environmental management information systems is the prerogative of the state, corporations and one of the main directions of the national informatization policy. A clearly debugged system of environmental monitoring gives a general idea of the features of the current ecological state, the main directions of state policy in the field of environmental protection, the use of natural resources and environmental safety. The methodology and hardware-software tools for monitoring the state of the environment presented in the monograph are effective tools for supporting decision-making in managing the environmental safety of the atmosphere during its technogenic pollution.

This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' safety, productivity, comfort, and convenience depend on the reliable supply of electric power. The electric power system is a complex "cyber-physical" system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.
