Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive view of research in lens developmental biology, emphasising technical and molecular breakthroughs. Elucidation of the mechanisms that govern lens development has enabled us to understand how the normal lens forms and how developmental processes are involved in the maintenance of its normal structure, function and growth throughout life. This knowledge is fundamental to our understanding of many lens disorders. The ocular lens has also become a model for understanding the developmental biology of more complex organ systems. In this 2004 book, leading experts in lens cell biology and development discuss lens evolution, induction, morphology, the regulation of the lens cell cycle and fiber cell differentiation, as well as lens regeneration. This book is an authoritative treatment of the subject that will serve as a reference for graduate students and research scientists in developmental biology and in the visual sciences, as well as for ophthalmologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the highly successful and comprehensive text on lacrimal disorders presents the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field. The new edition includes six new chapters, additional photographs and all chapters now have a separate section on recent advances. Written by experts in the field of dacryology, this book is a practical guide to evaluating and managing patients with lacrimal disorders. It methodically discusses basic anatomy and underlying pathology, patient evaluation, and all surgical procedures currently used to manage such disorders. It thoroughly yet concisely reviews surgical modalities including the endoscopic and micro-endoscopic approaches and provides ample illustrations for a better understanding. Since familiarity with a surgical technique is incomplete without the knowledge of risk factors and red flags, the text highlights ways of dealing with surgical complications and failure. Further it discusses in detail controversial topics and treatment dilemmas and reviews the current consensus among the experts. This is an up-to-date reference work for dacryologists, oculoplastic surgeons, general ophthalmologists as well as fellows in training.

The diversity of its parts and the precision of their interac tion make it a favorite model system for a variety of developmental studies. The eye is a particularly valuable experimental system not only because its tissues provide examples of fundamental processes, but also because it is a prominent and easily accessible structure at very early embryonic ages. In order to provide an open forum for investigators working on all aspects of ocular development, a series of symposia on ocular and visual de velopment was initiated in 1973. A second purpose has been to foster communication between the basic research worker and the clinical community. It is our feeling that much can be learned on both sides from this interaction. The idea for an informal meeting allowing a maximum exchange of ideas originated with Dr. Leon Candeub, who supplied the necessary driving force that made the series a reality.

Book excerpt: This monograph, unlike most previously published books on the subject, approaches the embryology of the eye and its adnexae from the perspective of gestational age, providing a unique overall view of the various structures of the eye at different stages of prenatal development. Embryogenesis, organogenesis and differentiation are three main periods that can be distinguished in the prenatal development of the human eye. The chapters in this book describe in detail the series of sequential events that occur during these periods from the fertilization of the ovum to, and after, birth. Superbly illustrated and clearly written, this text contains a wealth of information for residents in ophthalmology, neonatal and pediatric ophthalmologists, as well as for all ophthalmologists and physicians interested in developmental anomalies.

Book excerpt: The eye is a complex sensory organ, which enables visual perception of the world. Thus the eye has several tissues that do different tasks. One of the most basic aspects of eye function is the sensitivity of cells to light and its transduction though the optic nerve to the brain. Different organisms use different ways to achieve these tasks. In this sense, eye function becomes a very important evolutionary aspect as well. This book presents the different animal models that are commonly used for eye research and their uniqueness in evaluating different aspects of eye development, evolution, physiology and disease. * Presents information on the major animal models used in eye research including invertebrates and vertebrates * Provides researchers with information needed to choose between model organisms * Includes an introductory chapter on the different types of eyes, stressing possible common molecular machinery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Who would believe that so small a space could contain the images of all the universe?" Leonardo da Vinci The last years of the 20th century have found the discipline of Developmental Biology returning to its original position at the forefront of biological re search. This progress can be attributed to the burgeoning knowledge base on molecules and gene families, and to the power of the molecular genetic ap proach. Topping the list of organ systems which have provided the most significant advances would have to be the eye. The vertebrate eye was one of the classic embryologic models, used to demonstrate many important prin ciples, including the concepts of inductive tissue interactions first put forth in the early 1900s. Within the last decade of this century, a return to some of the old questions with the new approaches has put eye development back into the limelight. I find this a highly appropriate topic for a book which aims to spark research for the new millennium. We begin with a chapter that discusses the anatomy of eye development, providing the basic reference information for the chapters that follow. A novel aspect of this introduction is the connection made between develop mental strategies and the eye's optical function. What also emerges from this chapter is the number of important eye structures that have barely been touched by the modern developmental biologist. Work on cornea and ante rior chamber development has lagged behind lens and retina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology was an important step in updating the histology texts available to practicing pathologists and pathology trainees who perform fetal autopsy and/or participate in research involving fetal tissues. It was a well-received volume that filled a major gap in pathology references related to normal histology and provided a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of fetal and neonatal histology. While the basics of fetal histology have changed little in the intervening years since publication of the first edition, this successor edition provides new insights and a fresh perspective. This book contains six new chapters including: blood vessels and lymphatics, external genitalia, eye, ear, skin, and maceration changes. Many existing chapters have also been expanded to address a greater breadth of fetal and neonatal histology such as postnatal testis development and the cardiac conduction system. The “Special Considerations” sections were also expanded in many chapters to address particularly problematic issues within individual organ systems. The book reviews the histology of the major organ systems in the fetus and neonate and provides detailed images, up-to-date references, and practical guidelines for identifying tissues across all gestational ages of development. The second edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology serves as the ultimate go-to resource for pathologists and researchers dealing with, and interested in, fetal and neonatal histology. It provides a comprehensive summary of the current status of the field with excellent and extensive illustrative examples that help guide the clinical study of fetal and neonatal histology and stimulate investigative efforts with fetal tissue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is indeed a pleasure to write a foreword for this spectacular book which represents a landmark in the history of ocular pathology. Not since the three volumes of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook appeared forty years ago has anything like this come on the market. This book represents a compre hensive, thorough and up-to-date clinically oriented textbook on ocular pathology. We are all indebted to the senior author, who is now professor of ophthal mology at the University of Erlangen, who presents us here with the fruit of decades of industrious endeavors. We also have to be grateful to the American ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. David Apple, who, as one of the main collaborators of the German edition, has now provided us with the English translation. The book has a twofold purpose: First, it is meant to be a source of instruction for ophthalmologists and pathologists. For that purpose it is beautifully illustrated both by clinical pictures and by excellent photomicro graphs and electromicroscopic pictures. Most valuable from a didactic point of view are the colored schematic drawings and the many tables. These two features are practically unique and should help any neophyte in grasp ing the principles of ocular pathology.
