Book excerpt: This book documents and analyses spatial planning in Ghana, providing a comprehensive and critical discussion of the evolving institutional and legal arrangements that have shaped and defined Ghana’s spatial planning system for more than seven decades; the contemporary policy instruments and mechanisms for articulating and implementing policies and proposals at multiple scales; and the formally established procedures for development management. It covers important themes in contemporary spatial planning discourse, including the evolving meaning, scope and purpose of spatial planning globally; the scales of spatial planning (i.e. national, regional, sub-regional and local); multi-level integration within spatial planning; public participation; the interface between urbanization, sustainable growth management and spatial planning; spatial planning and housing development; integrated spatial development and transportation planning; and spatial planning and the urban informal economy. Intended for undergraduate and graduate students, and academic researchers and practitioners/policy-makers in the multidisciplinary field of spatial planning, it appeals to readers seeking an international perspective on spatial planning systems and practices.
Book Synopsis Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development by : Franklin Obeng-Odoom
Download or read book Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development written by Franklin Obeng-Odoom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world development institutions commonly present 'urban governance' as an antidote to the so-called 'urbanisation of poverty' and 'parasitic urbanism' in Africa. Governance for Pro-Poor Urban Development is a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the meaning, nature, and effects of 'urban governance' in theory and in practice, with a focus on Ghana, a country widely regarded as an island of good governance in the sub region. The book illustrates how diverse groups experience urban governance differently and contextualizes how this experience has worsened social differentiation in cities. This book will be of great interest to students, teachers, and researchers in development studies, and highly relevant to anyone with an interest in urban studies, geography, political economy, sociology, and African studies.

Book Synopsis Development of the Cities of Ghana by : Catherine Farvacque-Vitković
Download or read book Development of the Cities of Ghana written by Catherine Farvacque-Vitković and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an analysis of the urban sector in Ghana and provides practical recommendations on how to unlock the development potential of the cities of Ghana. Three entry points have been identified: the first is urbanization and land markets. Current rapid and largely uncontrolled urban growth is stressing capacity to efficiently deliver infrastructure and services and is resulting in urban sprawl and inefficient use of land. Land management is a key constraint, with lack of systematic planning complicated by an overlap between the customary and formal systems of land delivery. The second is decentralization, municipal finance and service delivery. Financing of service delivery and practical arrangements for sharing of duties and responsibilities between the District Assemblies and the central Government remain to be implemented. There is a need to move away from dependency on transfers and to link the local planning process to the mandate of local authorities. The third is local economic development. Urban areas provide the ideal environment for businesses to maximize opportunities for economic growth. Currently, the country's service sector is inching along and productivity gains and economies of scale are limited. The report advocates moving away from "business as usual" and recommends a set of concrete actions linking municipal management reforms to improved access to services and economic growth, providing operational tools for planning for the future, improving fiscal transfers and local taxation and creating an environment favorable to businesses and economic activities.

Download or read book Ghana on the Go written by Jennifer Hart and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the 1910s, African drivers in colonial Ghana understood the possibilities that using imported motor transport could further the social and economic agendas of a diverse array of local agents, including chiefs, farmers, traders, fishermen, and urban workers. Jennifer Hart's powerful narrative of auto-mobility shows how drivers built on old trade routes to increase the speed and scale of motorized travel. Hart reveals that new forms of labor migration, economic enterprise, cultural production, and social practice were defined by autonomy and mobility and thus shaped the practices and values that formed the foundations of Ghanaian society today. Focusing on the everyday lives of individuals who participated in this century of social, cultural, and technological change, Hart comes to a more sensitive understanding of the ways in which these individuals made new technology meaningful to their local communities and associated it with their future aspirations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a product of collaborative research between the Institut de recherche pour le dveloppement (IRD, France), the University of Ghana, Legon and CODESRIA. It examines various economic, social and environmental challenges of urbanization that critically affect the capital of Ghana, which has experienced high demographic growth and territorial expansion. The study analyses the Greater Accra city dwellers residential practices, and focuses on two main factors influencing land and rental markets. On the one hand, it interrogates the constraints and dynamics of urban families, their needs and gender characteristics in terms of accommodation. On the other hand, it explores the opportunities and interests in investment on the part of land owners and real estate developers. At these two levels of describing the social and spatial discriminations, the book attempts to explain the difficult choices that this fragmented city faces. It emphasizes the role of mobility in structuring the metropolitan area, and the negative impact of lack of mobility which results in some households and communities suffering more than others. Light is thrown on diagnostics and prospects in the matter of urban planning.

This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are not only home to around half of the global population but also major centers of economic activity and innovation. Yet, so far there has been no consensus of what a city really is. Substantial differences in the way cities, metropolitan, urban, and rural areas are defined across countries hinder robust international comparisons and an accurate monitoring of SDGs. The report Cities in the World: A New Perspective on Urbanisation addresses this void and provides new insights on urbanisation by applying for the first time two new definitions of human settlements to the entire globe: the Degree of Urbanisation and the Functional Urban Area.
