Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superplastic behavior of the 5083 aluminum alloy with additions of Mn and Zr was studied by uniaxial tensile testing and microstructural evaluations. Additions of up to 0.2% Zr and 0.8% Mn were made to a base 5083 aluminum alloy to decrease the grain size and improve superplastic behavior. Constant strain-rate tensile test data were used to determine strain-rate sensitivity (m values) and elongations-to-failure for the alloys at strain rates ranging from 4 x 10−4 to 1 x 10−1 s−1 at temperatures of 450 to 550C. Elongations-to-failure of up to 400% at 1 x 10−2 s−1 were achieved for the modified alloys. The strain-rate sensitivity for the alloys as a function of strain was determined and two distinct behaviors were observed. For the alloys having composition close to the base 5083 alloy, the m value steadily decreased with increasing strain; however, in alloys with higher levels of Zr, the m value remained stable. A maximum m value of 0.65 was achieved at 0.7 strain for the 1.6% Mn and 0.2% Zr alloy at 1 x 10−3 s−1.

Book Synopsis Design Engineering Manual by : Mike Tooley
Download or read book Design Engineering Manual written by Mike Tooley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design Engineering Manual offers a practical guide to the key principles of design engineering. It features a compilation of extracts from several books within the range of Design Engineering books in the Elsevier collection. The book is organized into 11 sections. Beginning with a review of the processes of product development and design, the book goes on to describe systematic ways of choosing materials and processes. It details the properties of modern metallic alloys including commercial steels, cast irons, superalloys, titanium alloys, structural intermetallic compounds, and aluminum alloys. The book explains the human/system interface; procedures to assess the risks associated with job and task characteristics; and environmental factors that may be encountered at work and affect behavior. Product liability and safety rules are discussed. The final section on design techniques introduces the design process from an inventors perspective to a more formal model called total design. It also deals with the behavior of plastics that influence the application of practical and complex engineering equations and analysis in the design of products. Provides a single-source of critical information to the design engineer, saving time and therefore money on a particular design project Presents both the fundamentals and advanced topics and also the latest information in key aspects of the design process Examines all aspects of the design process in one concise and accessible volume

Book Synopsis Analysis of the Transition in Deformation Mechanisms in Superplastic 5083 Aluminum Alloys by Orientation Imaging Microscopy by : James W. Harrell
Download or read book Analysis of the Transition in Deformation Mechanisms in Superplastic 5083 Aluminum Alloys by Orientation Imaging Microscopy written by James W. Harrell and published by . This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently developed Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) methods have been applied to the analysis of microstructure and microtexture of 5083 aluminum alloy materials that have been processed to enable superplasticity. The phenomenon of superplasticity allows economical forming of complex components while retaining the high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios characteristic of aluminum alloys used in automotive, aerospace and military applications. Superplasticity requires fine grains with high-angle boundaries and resistance to failure by cavitation. OIM permits grain-specific orientation determination and quantitative assessment of the grain-to-grain disorientation distribution as well as grain size measurement in materials. The current work offers significant new insights into the development and response of superplastic microstructures; in particular, OIM data may be employed to delineate the transition from slip to grain boundary sliding in superplastic 5083 materials.
