Unlike other techniques that are sensitive to electron-phonon interactions, RIXS can give access to momentum dependent coupling constants. Information about the dispersion of the electron-phonon interaction is highly desirable in the context of understanding anisotropic conventional and unconventional superconductivity.We considered the phonon contribution to RIXS from the theoretical point of view. In contrast to previous studies, we emphasize the role of the core-hole lattice coupling. Our model, with parameters obtained from first principles, shows that even in the case of a deep core-hole, RIXS probes exciton-phonon coupling rather than a direct electron-phonon coupling.This difference leads to quantitative and qualitative deviations from the interpretation of the implied electron-phonon coupling from the standard view expressed in the literature. Thus, our objective is to develop a rigorous approach to quantify electron-phonon coupling within the context of RIXS measurements. The ability to accurately reproduce experimental results from first-principles calculations, without recourse to adjustable parameters, should be viewed as the ultimate test of a proper understanding of the phonon contribution to RIXS.We start by considering only the core-hole--phonon interaction within the context of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We combine an ab initio calculation of the real-space response function with many-body Green's functions techniques to reproduce the vibrational side-bands in SiX4 (X=H, F) molecules. The approach we developed is suitable for application to crystalline materials.We next consider the phonon contribution to X-ray absorption spectra. Unlike the charged excitations generated by X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption creates a neutral excitation that we approximate as a core-hole and an excited electron. We first solved the electronic part of the problem on the level of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and then dressed the resulting 2-particle excitonic quasiparticle with the exciton-phonon interactions using the cumulant ansatz. The viability of this methodology was tested by calculating the N K-edge XAS of the N2 molecule and the O K-edge of acetone. The resulting vibronic spectra agreed favorably with experimental results.Finally, we construct a hybrid formulation of the RIXS cross section that preserves explicit summation over a small number of final states, but replaces the summation over intermediate states, which might be enormously expensive, with a Green's function. We develop an expansion of the Green's function and derive both analytically exact (in the no-recoil limit) and approximate solutions. The formalism was again tested on the O K-edge of acetone and agrees well with the experiment. To provide an outlook towards future work, we discuss application of the developed formalism to crystalline materials.

Book excerpt: Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is a powerful technique in condensed matter physics for studying the electronic excitations in novel materials of interest. In currently operating hard x-ray scattering instruments the energy and momentum transfers are measured while the outgoing polarization is not measured due to significant technical challenges. But the outgoing polarization of the scattered photons provides valuable information about the states involved in the scattering which is difficult to determine without polarization analysis. Polarization analysis has proved extremely valuable in soft x-ray scattering and so a polarization analysis system is being developed to fill the technical void at higher energies. A polarization analyzer is designed to reflect the scattered photons from the main analyzer by about 90 degrees. At this reflecting angle, the in-plane polarization is naturally eliminated by the polarization factor so that the scattered photons perpendicular to the reflection plane are fully obtained. Therefore it can separate the two orthogonal polarizations by rotating the system by 90 degrees. The research in this dissertation is about the development of an outgoing polarization analysis system complementing for the current RIXS instrument at Advanced Photon Source. The polarization analysis system developed includes the x-ray polarization analyzer and the mechanics attached to the RIXS spectrometers and for aligning the polarization analyzer. A variety of diffraction-based polarization analyzers are being developed for different x-ray absorption edges. A polarization analyzer for Cu K-edge has been developed, and one for the Ir L3-edge has also been developed. By separating the outgoing polarization, the strong polarization dependent electron excitations, e.g. the spin-orbital excitations in iridates can be measured by the polarization analysis system. Further, the system enables us to separate and study the transverse and longitudinal magnons in Sr2IrO4, demonstrating a new capability for the RIXS technique.

Book excerpt: Here, we develop a phenomenological theory to predict the characteristic features of the momentumdependent scattering amplitude in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the energy scale of the superconducting gap in iron-based super-conductors. Taking into account all relevant orbital states as well as their specific content along the Fermi surface we evaluate the charge and spin dynamical structure factors for the compounds LaOFeAs and LiFeAs, based on tight-binding models which are fully consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We find a characteristic intensity redistribution between charge and spin dynamical structure factors which discriminates between sign-reversing and sign-preserving quasiparticle excitations. Consequently, our results show that RIXS spectra can distinguish between s± and s++ wave gap functions in the singlet pairing case. In addition, we find that an analogous intensity redistribution at small momenta can reveal the presence of a chiral p-wave triplet pairing.

Book excerpt: Basic-Energy Sciences of the Department of Energy (BES/DOE) has made large investments in x-ray sources in the U.S. (NSLS-II, LCLS, NGLS, ALS, APS) as powerful enabling tools for opening up unprecedented new opportunities for exploring properties of matter at various length and time scales. The coming online of the pulsed photon source, literally allows us to see and follow the dynamics of processes in materials at their natural timescales. There is an urgent need therefore to develop theoretical methodologies and computational models for understanding how x-rays interact with matter and the related spectroscopies of materials. The present project addressed aspects of this grand challenge of x-ray science. In particular, our Collaborative Research Team (CRT) focused on developing viable computational schemes for modeling x-ray scattering and photoemission spectra of strongly correlated materials in the time-domain. The vast arsenal of formal/numerical techniques and approaches encompassed by the members of our CRT were brought to bear through appropriate generalizations and extensions to model the pumped state and the dynamics of this non-equilibrium state, and how it can be probed via x-ray absorption (XAS), emission (XES), resonant and non-resonant x-ray scattering, and photoemission processes. We explored the conceptual connections between the time-domain problems and other second-order spectroscopies, such as resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) because RIXS may be effectively thought of as a pump-probe experiment in which the incoming photon acts as the pump, and the fluorescent decay is the probe. Alternatively, when the core-valence interactions are strong, one can view K-edge RIXS for example, as the dynamic response of the material to the transient presence of a strong core-hole potential. Unlike an actual pump-probe experiment, here there is no mechanism for adjusting the time-delay between the pump and the probe. However, the core hole predominantly decays via Auger processes, thereby providing an internal time-scale, which limits intermediate-state processes to timescales of a few femtoseconds. Accordingly, a number of activities directed at modeling K-, L- and M-edge RIXS in correlated materials were also pursused by our CRT. Our research effort supported by this CMCSN grant substantially advanced the understanding of x-ray scattering processes in the time-domain as well as in the more conventional scattering channels, including time-resolved photoemission, and how such processes can be modeled realistically in complex correlated materials more generally. The modeling of relaxation processes involved in time-domain spectroscopies is important also for understanding photoinduced effects such as energy conversion in photosynthesis and solar cell applications, and thus impacts the basic science for energy needs.

Book excerpt: The research reported here was a component of a three-year program at the University of Washington to improve fundamental knowledge that is important for developing new technologies and approaches to counter improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The focus of our component was to develop methods for identifying explosive materials using X-ray spectroscopy. All chemical explosives store energy in specific, high-energy chemical bonds. Detecting and classifying explosives is a matter of analyzing the structure of these bonds by some method, either direct or indirect. One direct method is to measure the X-ray emission spectrum of the relevant elements involved in the chemical bonds, such as nitrogen or oxygen in a typical explosive. A complementary technique is provided by a particular type of non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS). To investigate the feasibility of using NRIXS to detect and identify explosives, we have attempted to predict the signal to noise from NRIXS for typical applications. To achieve this, a new Atomic Inelastic X-ray Scatter (AXIS) computer code was developed, tested, and its accuracy verified by synchrotron and laboratory measurements.
