Book excerpt: ATLAS is one of the two main experiments at LHC with the purpose of investigating the microscopic properties of matter to address the most fundamental questions of particle physics. After the achievements of the first years of running, the potential reach for new discoveries and precise measurements at LHC is being extended by pushing further the energy and luminosity frontiers through three upgrades of the accelerator culminating in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To fully profit from the increased luminosity, two main upgrades of the ATLAS inner detector are planned. The first upgrade was already completed at the beginning of 2015 with the insertion of the IBL, a fourth pixel layer located at just 3.2 cm from the beam line. In the second major upgrade, foreseen for 2024, the full inner detector will be replaced by a completely new inner tracker fully made of silicon devices to cope with the high particle density and the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, which during its operational period will deliver 3000 fb-1, almost ten times the integrated luminosity of the full LHC program. This thesis addresses the study of new n+-in-p active edge pixel detectors by developing two novel doping profile analysis methods to study the radiation damage effects on the pixel detectors performance. These methods are the 3D sims imaging method and the TLM Method. TCAD simulation has been used to simulate the doping profiles, the electrical behavior and the radiation damage. Validating the simulation models with data have been done. Moreover, clean-room characterization, as well as testbeam measurement have been performed to test the different detector designs. In the second part of the thesis, I discuss the observation of the standard model Higgs boson bb decay mode using the data collected by ATLAS during the LHC Run2 at center-of-mass energy 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity 79.8 fb−1 of a proton-proton collision. I contributed specifically to the search of the standard model Higgs boson in VH(bb) production mode. In the VH(bb) analysis we don't have any channel that considers the tau leptons in the final state. I have performed a feasibility study to verify the gain of using the taus in the analysis. In addition, for the VH(bb) analysis I have worked on the multi-jet background estimation in the 1-lepton channel using the dijet-mass analysis method.

Book excerpt: By 2027, the LHC will enter its high luminosity regime, providing protons protons collisions at an unprecedented rate. The LHC experiments whill have to be upgraded to cope with this higher data rate. The new ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) will allow a better identification of b-quarks and interesting physics signature with b-quarks in the final states such as the Higgs trilinear coupling will be reachable. The work performed during this thesis consisted in testing planar pixel sensors for the ITk, as well as optimizing b-tagging algorithms. In parallel, a study on the radiation damage on silicon pixel sensors have been performed. The radiation hardness of silicon sensors plays a determinant role as it allows them to be efficient in the highly radiative environment at LHC. Understanding the impact of radiation in silicon sensors is a major challenge and a radiation damage digitizer which models radiation damage effects in ATLAS Monte Carlo simulations is currently developed by the ATLAS experiment. Three ITk silicon planar pixel sensors productions of LPNHE and FBK have been developed, produced and tested on beam. Sensors from these three productions aim to be part of the ITk and have to demonstrate good performance after being irradiated at high fluences. Several technological designs have been investigated, such as temporary metal biasing option and active edges which maximize the geometrical acceptance of the sensors. The optimization of b-tagging SV1 algorithm (a secondary-vertex based algorithm) will be pre- sented as well as a study on the extrapolation of b-tagging performances at high pT.

Book excerpt: This book explores the Higgs boson and its interactions with fermions, as well as the detector technologies used to measure it. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been a groundbreaking theory in our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe, but it is incomplete, and there are significant hints which require new physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a substantial confirmation of the Standard Model, but many of its decay modes remain elusive. This book presents the latest search for Higgs boson decays into c-quarks using a proton-proton collision dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This decay mode has yet to be observed and requires advanced machine learning algorithms to identify c-quarks in the experiment. The results provide an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson decays to c-quarks and a direct measurement of the Higgs boson coupling strength to c-quarks. The book also discusses the future of particle physics and the need for significant improvements to the detector to cope with increased radiation damage and higher data rates at the High-Luminosity LHC. It presents the characterization of the ATLAS pixel detector readout chip for the inner detector upgrade (ITk). The chip was subjected to irradiations using X-rays and protons to simulate the radiation environment at the HL-LHC. The tests showed that all readout chip components, including the digital logic and analogue front-end, are sufficiently radiation-tolerant to withstand the expected radiation dose. Finally, this book describes monolithic pixel detectors as a possible technology for future pixel detectors. This book is ideal for individuals interested in exploring particle physics, the Higgs boson, and the development of silicon pixel detectors.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpolation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the diphoton ([gamma][gamma]) decay channel of the Higgs boson has been one of the most potent channels due to the contrast between the smoothly falling background and sharply peaked signal in the diphoton invariant mass. In 2018, with up to 80 fb-1 of data at [square root]s = 13 TeV, ATLAS observed Higgs boson production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH) with a significance of 5.8 [sigma] by combining measurements in the [gamma][gamma], bb, ZZ, and multi-lepton Higgs decay channels. The ttH production cross-section was measured to be 670 [plus or minus] 90 (stat) +110 -100 (syst) fb. The diphoton channel was one of the main contributors to this result, alone providing a significance of 4.1 [sigma]. With 140 fb-1, a search for non-resonant Higgs pair production in the bb[gamma][gamma] final state was performed. No significant signal was observed and upper limits at 95% confidence level were set. The observed limit on the SM cross-section was 130 fb, or 4.2 times the predicted value. The observed Higgs trilinear coupling modifier was constrained to be between [-1.5, 6.7]. Both the ttH (H [rightwards arrow] [gamma][gamma]) and HH bb[gamma][gamma] analyses will benefit tremendously from the increased statistics expected from the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To ensure the continued efficiency of the detector in the harsh HL-LHC environment, ATLAS will install a new Inner Tracker (ITk) consisting of silicon pixel sensors in its innermost layer. At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a variety of electrical tests are performed for the construction of a prototype integrated pixel system, in order to provide early feedback and validation of the ITk design.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 the ATLAS and CMS experiments announced the discoveryof a new particle, a Higgs boson. This particle was hypothesized in the1960's and explains how fundamental particles get their mass. However, amodel with a single Higgs boson is still not able to explain the aforemen-tioned cosmological observations. An electrically charged Higgs boson isa feature of many suggested extensions of the current model, includingsupersymmetry. The properties of such a particle, e.g. its mass and howit interacts with other particles are not fixed by theory but forms a pa-rameter space in which we must look for it. Searches for charged Higgsbosons have been performed prior to the LHC, but with the new energyscale of the LHC, the experiments have been able to look for heavier par-ticles. In this work we searched for a charged Higgs boson decaying intothe heaviest two quarks, a top and bottom pair. No deviations from thestandard model were found in the data gathered up until 2016, and hencewe can set upper limits on the production rate of a charged Higgs boson. These limits can then be used to exclude parts of the parameter space. The LHC will be upgraded around 2025 to increase the luminosity, that is the intensity of the proton beams. Protons are not acceleratedone by one at the LHC but in bunches. The luminosity can be increasedby using more protons per bunch but also by squeezing the bunches to besmaller at the point of collision. This means that the rate at which we canhope to produce rare events will increase but also that the backgroundrates and so called pile-up, the number of proton collisions per bunchcrossing, will increase. The rate of bunch crossings at the LHC is muchtoo high for ATLAS to be able to readout and store all data for eachevent, instead we use triggers that select events which look interesting. The current triggers are not suited for the high rates and pile-up of theHigh Luminosity (HL) LHC after the upgrade and must thus be improved.A way to do this is to use the information from the tracking detector thatprovides information on the trajectories of charged particles. By usingalgorithms that can be implemented in hardware a track trigger can bemade fast enough to work within the short latency required at the HL-LHC. The tracking detector provides space points, measurements of theparticle trajectories at different intervals, to which a track can be fitted. The amount of data from the tracker is very large, and performing trackfits on all the combinations of the space point would take too much time. Therefore a track trigger must be able to select a subset of space points onwhich to perform the track fit. For this thesis we have explored the idea ofusing standalone electron and muon triggers to select a part of the trackervolume, and then select space points that match precomputed patternsthat correspond to high energy particles. It has been shown that this isa viable option to reduce background rates while keeping high efficiencyfor the events we want to keep, even in high pile-up conditions.

Book excerpt: For Run 2 of the LHC a fourth, innermost Pixel Detector layer on a smaller radius beampipe has been installed in the ATLAS Detector to add redundancy against radiation damage ofthe current Pixel Detector and to ensure a high quality tracking and b-tagging performance ofthe Inner Detector over the coming years until the High Luminosity Upgrade. State of the artcomponents have been produced and assembled onto support structures known as staves overthe last two years. In total, 20 staves have been built and qualified in a designated QualityAssurance setup at CERN of which 14 have been integrated onto the beam pipe. In the secondpart, A search for a Higgs boson produced via vector-boson fusion and decaying into invisibleparticles is discussed, using 20.3 fb-1 of proton proton collision data at the centre of massenergy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. For a Higgs boson with a massof 125 GeV, assuming the Standard Model production cross section, an upper bound of 0.28is set on the branching fraction of H →invisible at 90% confidence level, where the expectedupper limit is 0.31. The results are interpreted in model of Higgs portal dark matter where thebranching fraction limit is converted into upper bounds on the dark matter nucleon scatteringcross section as a function of the dark matter particle mass, and compared to results from thedirect dark matter detection experiments.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is planned to undergo a major upgrade, called the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), to fully exploit its physics potential until the end of its operation with an instantaneous luminosity of 5 to 7.5 times the design value (1*10^34 cm^(-2)s^(-1)). Consequently, the LHC experiments have to be upgraded as well (Phase-II upgrade) to be able to cope with the resulting increase in pile-up, data rates, and radiation doses. Therefore, the tracking detector of the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Detector, will be fully replaced by a new all-silicon tracking detector, the Inner Tracker (ITk). While it has been decided that only the baseline design of the pixel part of the ITk will be pursued, which foresees the use of hybrid pixel detectors, it has been worthwhile to study monolithic pixel sensor options as well, whose production is comparatively cost-efficient. Monolithic pixel sensors have recently made their way into particle physics experiments and they were considered as an alternative sensor option for the outermost pixel layer of the ITk. Within the scope of this thesis, a high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor (HV-MAPS) prototype, called ATLASPix_Simple, was characterized and studied regarding its suitability for the use in the ITk.
