This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The test results showed that unacceptable performance was predicted when the mixtures tested were subjected typical construction variability. A procedure was presented. The intent was to provide state agencies, asphalt mixture designers, and contractors the necessary tools and guidance to produce an asphalt mixture in which the expected performance can be evaluated before it was placed in the roadway. The overall benefit for such a system would lead to the design and construction of asphalt pavement that would last longer.

Book Synopsis Characterization of Louisiana Asphalt Mixtures Using Simple Performance Tests by : Louay N. Mohammad
Download or read book Characterization of Louisiana Asphalt Mixtures Using Simple Performance Tests written by Louay N. Mohammad and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to characterize the performance of HMA mixes based on four laboratory tests, including three simple performance tests (SPTs) dynamic modulus |E*|, flow time (Ft), flow number (FN), and a Loaded Wheel Tracking (LWT) test. In addition, two dynamic modulus prediction models, namely Witczak and Hirsch, were evaluated. Thirteen plant-produced HMA mixtures were selected in this study. Laboratory characterization tests included the dynamic modulus |E*|, flow number (FN), and Hamburg-Type LWT tests. Test results indicated that the |E*| test was sensitive to the nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) in the HMA mixture. Larger aggregates combined with recycled asphalt (RAP) tended to have high |E*| values at high temperatures. Both the Witczak and Hirsch models could predict the dynamic modulus |E*| values with a reasonable reliability. However, the Witczak model reliability increases for higher NMAS. On the other hand, the Hirsch model reliability increases for lower NMAS. The general ranking of the SPTs and LWT test was similar. In addition, this ranking was consistent with the field use of those mixtures in terms of their design traffic volume.

Book Synopsis Asphalt Mixture Specification and Testing by : Cliff Nicholls
Download or read book Asphalt Mixture Specification and Testing written by Cliff Nicholls and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide reviews the way asphalt mixture can be specified, with particular emphasis on the test methods used to measure performance. The advantages and limitations of the tests are described for measuring the desired property, and engineers can specify a test according to the material’s use. The book starts with a resume of specifications and their relative advantages and disadvantages for different situations. Then different properties are discussed in terms of: their specification; the test methods that can be used (primarily the EN 12697 suite of European methods, of which the author has been responsible for drafting); the extent to which the results predict performance; the levels that can be achieved with different asphalt mixes and types; what levels, if any, should be specified in various situations and pavement layers; and which other properties are adversely affected by enhanced performance. The final section covers various aspects of sustainability, with a strong emphasis on durability. Better understanding should enable clients and consultants who specify pavements to produce durable asphalt pavements more economically, and also help asphalt producers and students trying to understand the black art of asphalt.
Book Synopsis The SUPERPAVE Mix Design System Manual of Specifications, Test Methods, and Practices by : Edward T. Harrigan
Download or read book The SUPERPAVE Mix Design System Manual of Specifications, Test Methods, and Practices written by Edward T. Harrigan and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final product of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) Asphalt Research Program is the SUPERPAVE (registered trademark) mix design system for new construction and overlays. This system employs a series of new performance-based specifications, test methods, and practices for material selection, accelerated performance testing, and mix design. This report documents these new specifications and procedures in a format suitable for eventual American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standardization.
Book Synopsis Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives by : Robert Y. Liang
Download or read book Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives written by Robert Y. Liang and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.
