Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensor for measuring body glucose concentration non-invasively was designed. This non-invasive sensor is an inductor with plastic material as its core having permeability nearly equal to that of air. The proposed sensor is examined by placing it on the body usually on wrist or arm and the obtained results are analyzed to know the change in glucose concentration. The working principle of the sensor is that the stray capacitance present between the turns of the inductor varies with the change in body glucose because the change in glucose levels changes the dielectric properties of the tissue and as the sensor is on the body, it senses these changes in dielectric properties. The circuit model of the sensor is simulated to analyze its electrical characteristics and the observed results are provided in this work. A prototype of the sensor is built and several tests are conducted on body and even on sugar solutions of different concentrations. A detection circuit is built which includes amplitude and phase detectors to measure the variations of sensor output. With the analysis of body test results, the sensor seems to sense the change in body glucose concentration before and after the meals which is observed as a change in the voltage of the detection circuit.

Book excerpt: Although noninvasive, continuous monitoring of glucose concentration in blood and tissues is one of the most challenging areas in medicine, a wide range of optical techniques has recently been designed to help develop robust noninvasive methods for glucose sensing. For the first time in book form, the Handbook of Optical Sensing of Glucose in Biological Fluids and Tissues analyzes trends in noninvasive optical glucose sensing and discusses its impact on tissue optical properties. This handbook presents methods that improve the accuracy in glucose prediction based on infrared absorption spectroscopy, recent studies on the influence of acute hyperglycemia on cerebral blood flow, and the correlation between diabetes and the thermo-optical response of human skin. It examines skin glucose monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), fluorescence-based glucose biosensors, and a photonic crystal contact lens sensor. The contributors also explore problems of polarimetric glucose sensing in transparent and turbid tissues as well as offer a high-resolution optical technique for noninvasive, continuous, and accurate blood glucose monitoring and glucose diffusion measurement. Written by world-renowned experts in biomedical optics and biophotonics, this book gives a complete, state-of-the-art treatise on the design and applications of noninvasive optical methods and instruments for glucose sensing.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study covering the design and application of microwave sensors for glucose concentration detection, with a special focus on glucose concentration tracking in watery and biological solutions. This book is based on the idea that changes in the glucose concentration provoke variations in the dielectric permittivity of the medium. Sensors whose electrical response is sensitive to the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding media should be able to perform as glucose concentration trackers. At first, this book offers an in-depth study of the dielectric permittivity of water–glucose solutions at concentrations relevant for diabetes purposes; in turn, it presents guidelines for designing suitable microwave resonators, which are then tested in both water–glucose solutions and multi-component human blood plasma solutions for their detection ability and sensitivities. Finally, a portable version is developed and tested on a large number of individuals in a real clinical scenario. All in all, the book reports on a comprehensive study on glucose monitoring devices based on microwave sensors. It covers in depth the theoretical background, provides extensive design guidelines to maximize sensitivity, and validates a portable device for applications in clinical settings.

Book excerpt: Diabetes is a rapidly growing disease that can cause several types of disabilities, and even death. No cure to this disease has been discovered as yet; the only solution is to monitor, and keep the level of glucose in blood controlled. Unlike the finger-prick method, non-invasive monitoring, through IR spectroscopy, is a convenient and harmless way of measuring the glucose level. In principle, a beam of light is focused on a part of body to excite the molecules, which either absorb this light partially or transmit some radiations in response. These radiations may be collected and unique response that different components of a blood serum show to this light may be observed in a form of spectra. Since glucose is not the only component present in blood, the multivariate calibration techniques are used to isolate the glucose spectrum from the collected spectra. This work presents a comparison between various multivariate calibration techniques in terms of their precision under varying signal-to-noise ratios. The presented results are useful, especially for the researchers working to develop a non-invasive glucose monitoring device, in making a choice between the available techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel." Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he invested in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its complexity and imprecision. In the wake of these financial setbacks, he filed for protection from his creditors via bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so. Twain was born shortly after a visit by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it," too. He died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature."

Book excerpt: Background: As a global chronic disease, diabetes is associated with high morbidity and cannot be fully cured with current technology. In order to achieve better long-term control of glucose, it requires continuous monitoring of metabolic indices. The most commonly used glucose monitor is finger stick testing glucose meters. When using it as a method for frequent glucose monitoring, it can cause physical discomfort, infection risk and contradiction. Noninvasive glucose monitoring can accomplish painless, risk-free, low-cost and frequent testing of glucose, which is an ideal method for self-monitoring of glucose. Aims: To verify the accuracy of noninvasive blood glucose monitor based on metabolic heat conformation method in patients with type 2 diabetes. The Noninvasive Glucose Monitor: Based on the theory of metabolic heat conformation method, Tsinghua University and Beijing Sunicare Medical Technologies Co., Ltd. developed a noninvasive glucose monitor. The monitor includes a host and a probe, as shown in Fig. 1. The probe is like a finger clip and the sensors are located inside the probe. The host is like an ipad, which is used for human-computer interaction, control the signal acquisition, data processing and result presenting. The Clinical Trial Design: The recruited type 2 diabetes subjects arrived at the test center before 8 am, then took a rest for 30 minutes to make sure the volunteers are in heat balance state with the environment. The fasting calibration was done first, then the noninvasive test was performed 20 minutes later. The fingertip blood and serum plasma glucose test were performed immediately after the noninvasive test, and the fasting glucose test was finished. The subjects then ate 80g noodles in 15 minutes. Then in 2 hours postprandial, the noninvasive test, fingertip blood test and serum plasma test were conducted in sequence. All the three tests were performed two times, the average of the two results was taken. Results: A total of 254 type 2 diabetes subjects were enrolled, including 118 female and 136 male, with an average age of 59.3 years. Comparison of the noninvasive glucose results and the serum blood glucose result: overall glucose range was 4.0-23.8 mmol/L, the correlation was 0.6902, the RMSE (root-mean-square error) was 2.668 mmol/L; the fasting glucose range was 4.0-17.3 mmol/L, the correlation was 0.8394, the RMSE was 1.855 mmol/L; the 2 hours postprandial glucose range was 4.7-23.8 mmol/L, the correlation was 0. 5393, the RMSE was 3.290 mmol/L. The results in the Parkersu2019 error grid were shown in Fig. 3 and Tab. 1. The fasting results were showed in black and the postprandial results were showed in red.Discussion: The noninvasive blood glucose monitor based on metabolic heat conformation method showed a good correlation with the serum glucose in fasting state, while in postprandial state the correlation reduced. This may related to the greater variability of the parameters of local circulation state, temperature and humidity in postprandial state. The method requires the user and the environment are in heat balance state, which is not easy to quantify. We need to make a trade-off between test convenience and accuracy, rest in the environment for 20 to 30 minutes is a suitable choice. It is suggested that, with a further technical improvement or more specific use conditions, the noninvasive blood glucose monitor based on metabolic heat conformation method have a great prospect in noninvasive glucose monitoring in clinical use.
