Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of Manual Training, in the United States It is the purpose of this thesis to trace out the development of Manual Training in the United States; to state the causes which were responsible for its introduction; to suggest the benefits derived; and to give some idea of the present trend of educational thought in regard to the subject. Much has been written in recent years about Vocational Education, Industrial Training, Technical Training, Mechanic Arts, and Trade Schools. Discussion of these forms of training does not lie within the scope of this paper, except when they are so interrelated with Manual Training that it is practically impossible to divorce them. Domestic Science is not treated under a separate heading, but is discussed in its relation to Manual Training. Much that is said concerning Manual Training is true, also, of Domestic Science. What Manual Training is to the boys, Domestic Science is to the girls. Much confusion has arisen among the uninitiated because of the different terms used, hence, it is of prime importance that the distinction between Manual Training and the other forms of training be made perfectly clear. A Manual Training course, as outlined at the present time, consists of a graded course in wood, iron, and machinists' work; systematic and continued instruction in free-hand and mechanical drawing, combined with academic studies as co-ordinated departments. It is not the purpose of Manual Training to teach trades, but rather to make the boy familiar with the use of tools. It is disciplinary in that it endeavors to train the hand for the purpose of securing at the same time the training of the mind, through the senses of touch and perception. At the same time the eye is being trained to accurate observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the High School There is a widespread and' growing demand, in this country for manual training and industrial education. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. Almost all of the large cities in every State have spent large sums for buildings and equipment in order to meet the demand. The work in these centers is thoroughly organized, and the excellent results thus far attained have fully justified the large expenditures. In order to extend the benefits of instruction in manual train ing to more schools, legislation to encourage and assist schools undertaking this work, has been enacted in many of the States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1899-1900, Vol. 1 I see now, better than I did then, that I was really getting the lion's share of the profit. I had a kind of pleasure in doing such things for my pupils, and there was a further incentive in the evident pleasure of my pupils in seeing what I did. I did not know it at the time, but as I look back I realize that I must have worked in a spirit more selfish than altruistic. I prized the exhilaration in self that comes from showing novel things to others rather more than the exhilaration in others that comes from finding things out for themselves. At any rate, 1 did not so much ask my pupils to Observe for themselves as I sought to have them see what I saw, and hear what I had to say. 1 was the active one; they were the passive. Had any one said to me at this time, Now what you are doing yourself for your pupils is just what thev ought to be doing themselves, I might have assented to the suggestion as ideally a good one, but I certainly would have scouted it as impracticable. The schoolhouse where I taught was not adapted to such work; the com mittee had no money for it; the public would not stand the expense of it; pupils would cut, burn and poison themselves in doing it; parents. Could not see the sense of it, and would not tolerate the thought of it; I had no time to give to it it was all I could do to keep my head above water with my own humble undertakings. I presume, however, it was. Not the result Of any conscious decision on my part that I did not, as a matter Of fact, stir up a hornet's nest of protests in the matter, but sim ply held my peace and kept on doing experiments in a desultory way, as I had begun.r 899] the MA nual tra [ni/vg [dea 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Education: A Guide to Manual Training The lessons in this volume were originally pre pared as a guide for the instructors and pupils in the Industrial department of the schools with which the authors are connected. A complete system of Manual Training having been organized and put in operation, it became necessary that it should be formulated for the convenience of the classes, and for the guidance of the instructors in charge of them. It was not supposed that there would be a demand for the publication of this course in Manual Train ing. But the subject of Industrial Education has been rapidly growing in the minds of teachers and others interested in the development and growth of educational methods. Inquiries came with increased frequency as to what was being done in the J ames town schools, and whether it was practicable to make Manual Training a feature of education in the public schools. It was thought best to make no reply until actual tests, in all the grades from the Primary to the High Schools, had been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training The psychologist tells us that the mental powers are di vided into two classes, the receptive and the expressive, or active. By means of the former, we receive impressions of new facts, and by means of the latter, we make these our own and put them to practical use. This is done through some form of expression, either language, construction, or art. Of these, language is most commonly used. Probably con struction is next, for by means of it, man has been able to pro vide for his needs through all the ages. The expressive and active faculty is best illustrated in children in their desire to express themselves through doing. Their hands must be em ployed in some way; and as they cannot build up, they use this ceaseless activity in tearing down, their natural tendency being to destroy, to pull things apart to see how they are made. It is not hard to turn this destructive propensity into the constructive, both being forms of the same activity, if we give the children something to work with and train them sys tematically in the right use of those materials to make an article that will appeal to them through its usefulness and beauty and bring wholesome thoughts in the making. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Manual Training Ou the other hand, mere prescription, mere inhibitory will power developed to extremes produces only a mechanical civiliza tion a dead mechanical state of social existence. We look upon the Chinese education as productive of such a condition. All is cut and dried and given to the pupil as a ready-made form into which he must fit himself by inhibition of natural caprice and inclination. The consequence is the least possible progress and the completest administration of the old system. What the philosophy of history must regard as the ideal stan dard of progress among nations is therefore not a mere perfection in administration, for this is achieved in the perfectly stationary empire of conservatism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Aspects of Manual Training This is recognized by the rational education of our day. In its earlier work, in kindergarten and primary school, it addresses itself with equal insistence to the various life-utterances of the child. It has ever in view the whole being of the child. It trains the intellect, the sensibilities, the will, and the hand; teaches him to see, say, choose, and do. It does this, perhaps at first, chiefly with reference to individual aims; but it directs these steadily more and more into social channels.
