Book excerpt: Analyzes how well the Natural Heritage Classification (NHC) and the Anderson Classification systems classify an area based on Landsat imagery and a modern (circa 2002) land cover map created by the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council (CLWC). A geographic information system (GIS) is used to reclassify the Landsat imagery into land uses and land covers based on the two classification systems and to produce tables expressing the accuracy of each system as compared to the truth image.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the project reported was to investigate how large-scale sampling photography (LSSP) can be used to enhance the current forest resource inventory (FRI) methodology of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, particularly for forest management planning, regulation, and control purposes. The Timmins Forest (162,923 hectares) was used as the study area. Enhancements focus on three primary roles: how LSSP parallels the FRI data collection procedures and can produce some complementary results; how LSSP can support current FRI data; and how LSSP can provide supplementary information that FRI data cannot. The project also assessed the effectiveness of the inventory data produced by each of the three contributions in an operational context. Effectiveness was evaluated in terms of the accuracy of the information, cost, and limitations.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Ecological dynamics in human-influenced landscapes are strongly affected by socioeconomic factors that influence land-use decision making. Incorporating these factors into a spatially-explicit landscape-change model requires integrating multidisciplinary data. In order to study the effects of land use on landscape structure in regions such as the Little Tennessee River basin in western North Carolina and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, we have developed the Land Use Change Analysis System or LUCAS for UNIX-based workstations. The map layers used by LUCAS are derived from remotely-sensed images, census and ownership maps, topographical maps, and outputs from econometric models. These map layers are stored, displayed, and analyzed using a public-domain Geographic Information System (GIS). Simulations using LUCAS generate new maps of land cover representing the amount of land-cover change so that issues such as biodiversity conservation, assessing the importance of landscape elements to meet conservation goals, and long-term landscape integrity can be addressed."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During FY15 staff from the Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC) developed an online survey to assess Forest Service land cover disturbance information needs. There were 172 respondents to the survey across a wide and representative spectrum of potential Landscape Change Monitoring System (LCMS) information users. The respondents expressed a strong and growing need for land cover change information. Major drivers of their need include federal and agency requirements and initiatives, as well as local initiatives. The top three major business areas for land cover change monitoring were identified as 1) Forest Health, 2) Watershed Health, and 3) Forest and Vegetation Management. Forest characteristics of canopy cover, forest and non-forest groups, and forest structure were identified as the most important parameters to monitor. In addition, causative agents of change such as fire, invasive species, insects and disease, and climate change, were very important to understand and should be provided as part of the land cover change information. The data needs of the respondents covered a wide spectrum; however, the survey results clearly show a tendency towards a spatial extent of roughly a National Forest, with a 30 m pixel size data granularity, and a 1-year revisit time. The desired analysis resolution (i.e., the level at which the change information is summarized) was at the District-to-National Forest levelalthough a large number of respondents expressed a preference to summarize the data themselves to other resolutions. In addition to information about the presence/absence of land cover change, the respondents indicated that the causative agent of disturbance and trend analysis information would be the most useful additional analysis products. Finally, an overwhelming majority desired access to the data layers used to derive the land cover change products by downloading the data from corporate information systems.
