This book was released on 1994 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mechanistic approach was used to develop improved polymer concrete (PC) for repair of portland cement concrete (PCC). The VEPM binder system (vinyl esters containing acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, polar methacrylates, styrene and a silane coupling agent) produced PCs with tensile, flexural and compressive strengths superior to existing polyester PCs. VEPM PCs have excellent bonding characteristics to steel and PCC (both dry and moist), and the bonds are highly resistant to degradation by harsh freeze-thaw-soak cycles. They also have good absorption, chemical resistance and volume shrinkage.

Book excerpt: The increased use of deicing salts is causing rapid deterioration of portland cement concrete bridge decks. Soluble chlorides cause corrosion of the steel reinforcing rods with a corresponding increase in volume of the rods. This expansion causes stresses in the concrete which result in delaminations and surface spalling. The repair of surface spalls with portland cement concrete can only be made if traffic can be avoided for several days. A patching material which would allow traffic to resume over the repaired area in a few hours was needed. Polymer concrete (PC) was developed to repair deteriorated portland cement concrete. Polymer concrete is defined as a composite material in which the aggregate is bound together in a dense matrix with a polymer binder. The aggregate is mixed with a monomer mixture and subsequently cured in place. Polymer concrete combines the premix characteristics of portland cement concrete with high strength, long term durability properties and fast cure times. PC placed at temperatures between 35°F and 95°F attains strengths greater than 5000 psi in 2 hours. The high early strength of PC is suitable for use in the repair of highway structures where traffic conditions allow closing of the area for only a few hours.

Book Synopsis Adhesion between polymers and concrete / Adhésion entre polymères et béton by : H. R. Sasse

This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Book excerpt: The practicality of using polymer concrete to repair deteriorated portland cement concrete bridge decks and pavements has been demonstrated. This manual outlines the procedures for using polymer concrete as a rapid patching material to repair deteriorated concrete. The process technology, materials, equipment, and safety provisions used in manufacturing and placing polymer concrete are discussed. The objective of the report is to inform potential users of the various steps necessary to insure successful field applications of the material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). Concrete-polymer composites have attracted peoples attention in many industries for their excellent physical and mechanical properties and durability. The peer reviewed paper in this special volume cover the following topics: materials, mix proportion design and properties of concrete-polymer composites; their characterization methods, their application and other special aspects. In these papers the authors are trying to answer what is essential in concrete-polymer composites, how to make it better for the given project and how to eventually achieve sustainable building materials.

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Use of Polymer-concrete for Rapid Repair of Airfield Pavements written by Michael T. McNerney and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of a high-strength, fast setting mixture of methyl methacrylate and dry aggregate was conducted. The resulting polymer-concrete (PC) was very strong, durable, and bonded excellently to concrete. Tests were conducted to determine the variables affecting the polymerization time and strength of polymer-concrete. Field tests were conducted to interstate highways and a major airport taxiway which demonstrated the feasibility of making rapid polymer-concrete repairs at a reasonable cost. Laboratory tests of a 3-foot by 6-foot area repaired by PC and an individual PC slab under repeated loadings of simulated truck and aircraft traffic demonstrated the excellent strength and durability of the material. A cost analysis found the cost of monomer to be approximately $10/cubic foot for most repairs. (Author).
