Book excerpt: During the first year, the initial phase of the project included a literature survey of surfactant/polymer flooding, a summary of the current status of DOE-sponsored polymer and surfactant/polymer field projects, and a survey of oil industry personnel regarding difficulties encountered in the use of commercially available polymers. Major problems in the use of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides were identified. Purpose of Phase 1 was to delineate the strengths and weaknesses of commercial polymers. Laboratory tests in the second phase then were designed to measure and compare the factors considered to be of greatest importance. During the second year of the project, the Phase 2 baseline screening tests were completed, and Phase 3 work commenced on the synthesis, characterization, and preliminary screening of new or modified polymers. During the final year of the project, the preliminary screening tests were completed and polymers of interest were evaluated in more detail. This final report contains highlights of the significant accomplishments of the project and presents our conclusions regarding the development of improved mobility control agents. The work has shown that moderate changes in the basic structure of acrylamide polymers can produce significant effects on performance in oil recovery applications. Better viscosity retention in brine can be obtained by stiffening the polymer chain of acrylamide-type materials. Enhanced shear stability can be attained by increasing the polymer hydrophilicity.

Book excerpt: The objective of this laboratory work is to develop improved mobility control agents that are more effective than the commercial polymers currently used in this process. During the second year of the project, the baseline testing of commercial products was completed. These baseline tests with polymers include studies on mobility control, retention, and shear degradation in Berea cores, the effect of common ions on rheological properties, thermal stability, microbial degradation, and surfactant-polymer interactions. These data are used for comparison of the commercial agents at standardized sets of conditions, and are also used to evaluate new, modified, or improved polymers. Work was also initiated on the synthesis, characterization, and preliminary screening of new and modified polymers. Testing of these analogs provides systematic correlations of polymer performance with polymer structure. This preliminary testing consists of measurements of shear degradation and viscosity loss in NaCl brines by the use of a simplified screening procedure. To date, a number of potential structure-utility relationships have been observed. Solution viscosities of all nonionic polymers tested are essentially insensitive to changes in NaCl concentration. Increasing the charge-to-mass ratio (degree of hydrolysis) of either polyacrylamides or N-alkyl analogs enhances the ability of these polymers to build viscosity in low salinity NaCl brines. However, such polymers are increasingly subject to viscosity loss as the salinity is increased. Above a certain critical molecular weight, polymers become more susceptible to shear degradation. Many of the polymers that possess stiffer backbones exhibit improved brine and shear stability. The results of these studies will be used to develop an improved mobility control polymer in the next phase of this project.

Rheological measurements and mobility control test in Berea cores have been completed on Dow Pusher 700, Betz Hi Vis, Nalco Nal-flo, Cyanamid 960S, Kelco Xanflood, and Abbott Xanthan Broth. Similar tests were completed for Pusher 500, Pusher 1000, Amoco Sweepaid 103, and Pfizer Flocon Biopolymer 1035. Shear degradation tests in Berea core plugs have been completed for one acrylamide-type polymer and one xanthan polymer in 0.3% NaCl. Similar tests in 3% NaCl plus 0.3% CaCl2 are in progress. Viscosity and screen factor data have been collected for most of the commercially available polymers. Long-term thermal stability tests with one polyacrylamide polymer and one xanthan polymer have been initiated. Phase 3: The polymer synthesis phase of the program is in progress. A series of N-alkyl (N-methyl, N-isopropyl, and N-butyl) acrylamide homopolymers and copolymers with acrylic acid has been synthesized. Variations of the substituents on the acrylamide nitrogen atom did not substantially change the properties of the parent compound. Increasing the molecular weight tends to impart increased shear sensitivity. Degree of hydrolysis also affects performance of the modified polymer. 25 figures, 40 tables.

Experiments were performed to determine in situ foam generation and propagation using varying concentrations of surfactants in a Berea sandstone core. An apparatus was designed and built to accurately measure differential pressures along sections of the core. Bottle or shake tests using the various concentrations of surfactants and experiments to determine the effect of foam flow on reducing mobility and involved steady-state measurement of differential pressures in the presence of foam were performed. Coreflood displacement experiments in the presence of oil were performed using varying concentrations of surfactants to compare various injection modes and oil recovery efficiency. 15 refs., 18 figs., 5 tabs.

Book excerpt: The primary objectives of this research were to understand the potential for gravity-stable surfactant floods for enhanced oil recovery without the need for mobility control agents and to optimize the performance of such floods. Surfactants are added to injected water to mobilize the residual oil and increase the oil production. Surfactants reduce the interfacial tension (IFT) between oil and water. This reduction in IFT reduces the capillary pressure and thus the residual oil saturation, which then results in an increase in the water relative permeability. The mobility of the surfactant solution is then greater than the mobility of the oil bank it is displacing. This unfavorable mobility ratio can lead to hydrodynamic instabilities (fingering). The presence of these instabilities results in low reservoir sweep efficiency. Fingering can be prevented by increasing the viscosity of the surfactant solution or by using gravity to stabilize the displacement below a critical velocity. The former can be accomplished by using mobility control agents such as polymer or foam. The latter is called gravity-stable surfactant flooding, which is the subject of this study. Gravity-stable surfactant flooding is an attractive alternative to surfactant polymer flooding under certain favorable reservoir conditions. However, a gravity-stable flood requires a low velocity less than the critical velocity. Classical stability theory predicts the critical velocity needed to stabilize a miscible flood by gravity forces. This theory was tested for surfactant floods with ultralow interfacial tension and found to over-estimate the critical velocity compared to both laboratory displacement experiments and fine-grid simulations. Predictions using classical stability theory for miscible floods were not accurate because this theory did not take into account the specific physics of surfactant flooding. Stability criteria for gravity-stable surfactant flooding were developed and validated by comparison with both experiments and fine-grid numerical simulations. The effects of vertical permeability, oil viscosity and heterogeneity were investigated. Reasonable values of critical velocity require a high vertical permeability without any continuous barriers to vertical flow in the reservoir. This capability to predict when and under what reservoir conditions a gravity-stable surfactant flood can be performed at a reasonable velocity is highly significant. Numerical simulations were also used to show how gravity-stable surfactant flooding can be optimized to increase critical velocity, which shortens the project life and improves the economics of the process. The critical velocity for a stable surfactant flood is a function of the microemulsion viscosity and it turns out there is an optimum value that can be used to significantly increase the velocity and maintain stability. For example, the salinity gradient can be optimized to gradually decrease the microemulsion viscosity. Another alternative is to inject a polymer drive following the surfactant solution, but using polymer complicates the process and adds to its cost without significant benefit in most gravity-stable surfactant floods. A systematic approach was introduced to make decisions on using polymer in applications based on stability criteria and cost. Also, the effect of an aquifer on gravity-stable surfactant floods was investigated as part of a field-scale study and strategies were developed to minimize its effect on the process. This study has provided new insights into the design of an optimized gravity-stable surfactant flood. The results of the numerical simulations show the potential for high oil recovery from gravity-stable surfactant floods using horizontal wells. Application of gravity-stable surfactant floods reduces the cost and complexity of the process. The widespread use of horizontal wells has greatly increased the attractiveness and potential for conducting surfactant floods in a gravity-stable mode. This research has provided the necessary criteria and tools needed to determine when gravity-stable surfactant flooding is an attractive alternative to conventional surfactant-polymer flooding.
