Book Synopsis Applications of Photonic Technology by : J. Chrostowski
Download or read book Applications of Photonic Technology written by J. Chrostowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we present a snapshot of the state of the art in photonics in 1994, showing typical applications and emerging new ones; discussing the key technologies behind these applications, their limitations, and prospects. The articles in this book are extended versions of the papers presented at the first International Conference on Applications ofPhotonic Technology (ICAPT'94), held in Toronto, Canada, on June 21-23, 1994. Photonics has been recognized as one of the key technologies for the 21 st century, as electronics was the technology of the 20th centrury and electrical engineering changed the life of people in the 19th century. According to the recent report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris (OECD), the market for photonics will grow dramatically in the next 10 years with an expected world-wide expenditure of US $230 billion from some US $30 billion in 1992. The explosion of information technology was the largest driving force for the deployment of photonic technology. It created insatiable demand for ever-higher data transmission and processing rates, which cannot be sustained by electronics alone. Boosted by the enonnous investment of the telecommunications and defense industries, the demand for photonics (or optoelectronics) is steadily increasing. It is solidly established in the long haul communications, laser printers and CD-ROMs.

Book Synopsis Chemical Sensors in Oceanography by : Mark S Varney
Download or read book Chemical Sensors in Oceanography written by Mark S Varney and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-08-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic chemical sensing is a new and expanding field which has seen rapid recent development, and the increasing demand to make these types of measurements will ensure continuing technological advances. Chemical Sensors in Oceanography details the state-of-the-art of oceanographic chemical sensor research. It identifies the novel areas where chemical sensors are being used and developed, and indicates their usefulness to marine science. Leading researchers in the field introduce some of the most important techniques under development today, including their detecting principles, the monitored parameters, their theory, technology, and application to the marine environment. Chemical Sensors in Oceanography then goes on to consider the nature of future sensor development. This book will be an invaluable reference source for oceanographers, marine scientists and analytical chemists, particularly those involved in the development of chemical sensors. It is also recommended as a supplementary text for students studying chemical sensors.

This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural health monitoring (SHM) uses one or more in situ sensing systems placed in or around a structure, providing real-time evaluation of its performance and ultimately preventing structural failure. Although most commonly used in civil engineering, such as in roads, bridges, and dams, SHM is now finding applications in other engineering envir
Book Synopsis Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, Volume 1 by : Andrew McNamara
Download or read book Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, Volume 1 written by Andrew McNamara and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 1370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Modelling in Geotechnics collects more than 1500 pages of peer-reviewed papers written by researchers from over 30 countries, and presented at the 9th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics 2018 (City, University of London, UK 17-20 July 2018). The ICPMG series has grown such that two volumes of proceedings were required to publish all contributions. The books represent a substantial body of work in four years. Physical Modelling in Geotechnics contains 230 papers, including eight keynote and themed lectures representing the state-of-the-art in physical modelling research in aspects as diverse as fundamental modelling including sensors, imaging, modelling techniques and scaling, onshore and offshore foundations, dams and embankments, retaining walls and deep excavations, ground improvement and environmental engineering, tunnels and geohazards including significant contributions in the area of seismic engineering. ISSMGE TC104 have identified areas for special attention including education in physical modelling and the promotion of physical modelling to industry. With this in mind there is a special themed paper on education, focusing on both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well as practicing geotechnical engineers. Physical modelling has entered a new era with the advent of exciting work on real time interfaces between physical and numerical modelling and the growth of facilities and expertise that enable development of so called ‘megafuges’ of 1000gtonne capacity or more; capable of modelling the largest and most complex of geotechnical challenges. Physical Modelling in Geotechnics will be of interest to professionals, engineers and academics interested or involved in geotechnics, geotechnical engineering and related areas. The 9th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics was organised by the Multi Scale Geotechnical Engineering Research Centre at City, University of London under the auspices of Technical Committee 104 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). City, University of London, are pleased to host the prestigious international conference for the first time having initiated and hosted the first regional conference, Eurofuge, ten years ago in 2008. Quadrennial regional conferences in both Europe and Asia are now well established events giving doctoral researchers, in particular, the opportunity to attend an international conference in this rapidly evolving specialist area. This is volume 1 of a 2-volume set.
