Book excerpt: Sustained postcracking tensile resistance is a fundamental mechanical characteristic of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). This research program developed a simple, reliable direct tension test (DTT) method that can generate the uniaxial tensile mechanical response for both cast and extracted UHPFRC samples. The developed test method emulates DTT methods already commonly used in the mechanical testing of metals, thus addressing many of the hurdles that can hinder the implementation of new test methods. It was demonstrated to be applicable to two UHPFRCs with two different steel fiber reinforcement contents in seven total sets of specimens. The test method can facilitate the development of appropriate quality control processes for UHPFRC, the advancement of UHPFRC mixture designs, and the development of strain-based UHPFRC structural design criteria.

Book excerpt: "In the research project presented in this PhD-thesis, an innovative type of fibre concrete is developed, with improved both the tensile strength and the ductility: the Hybrid-Fibre Concrete (HFC). The expression "Hybrid" refers to the "hybridisation" of fibres: short and long steel fibres were combined together in one concrete mixture. This is opposite to conventional steel fibre concretes, which contain only one type of fibre. The basic goal of combining short and long fibres is from one side to improve the tensile strength by the action of short fibres, and from the other side to improve the ductility by the action of long fibres." "In this research project, all important aspects needed for the development and application of Hybrid-Fibre Concrete have been considered. In total 15 mixtures, with different types and amounts of steel fibres were developed and tested in the fresh state (workability) as well as in the hardened state (uniaxial tensile tests, flexural tests, pullout tests of single fibres and compressive tests). A new analytical model for bridging of cracks by fibres was developed and successfully implemented for tensile softening response of HFC. At the end, the utilisation of HFC in the engineering practice was discussed, including a case-study on light prestressed long-span beams made of HFC."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current test methods such as ASTM 1609, ASTM 1550 and direct tensile test are used for evaluating the mechanical properties of Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) and to determine the quality of mixture in design and construction practice. These test methods show high variability in the results, requires large specimen and complicated test setup. An ideal material test method for FRC should give consistent results in determining mechanical properties such as peak strength and residual strengths. Moreover, current test methods are expensive and time-consuming as more specimens are needed to acquire reliable test results. Double Punch Test (DPT) is a simple, reliable and consistent test method for evaluating the post-cracking behavior of FRC. DPT originally developed to determine the tensile strength of plain concrete, can also be used for evaluation of peak load and post-peak behavior of FRC and Ultra-High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-FRC). This method has a simple test setup and is easier to conduct in comparison to other test methods. DPT experimental test results are seen to be more consistent than the other test methods currently in practice. The simplicity of test setup, reliability of results (low scatter due to the higher cracking surface) and smaller specimens (fewer materials used) are the major advantages of using DPT method for evaluation of post cracking response of FRC and UHP-FRC. In this research, the application of double punch test is validated for FRC and the same method has been used and developed to confirm the suitability for UHP-FRC material in determining tensile strength and behavior in post cracking phase. However, there still exist some potential issue in the DPT method that needs to be resolved. The circumferential extensometer that is used to determine the total crack opening displacement in DPT is an expensive instrument. This limits the use of DPT method in most of the industrial and research laboratories. The measurement of crack width and inspection of a number of cracks are the important parameter for evaluating the characteristics of any concrete material. It is time-consuming to measure the crack width in a test by conventional visual inspection and automated crack width measurement is indispensable. This research mainly focuses on the deriving a simple formula for estimating average and maximum crack width using the axial deformation data and optimize the time taken for each DPT test. The relation would remove the need of using the expensive circumferential extensometer for the test. Thus, DPT could be used to evaluate and compare the quality of mixture for FRC and UHP-FRC by using a simple arrangement of LVDTs.

Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites (SHCC4), that was held at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany from 18 to 20 September 2017. The conference focused on advanced fiber-reinforced concrete materials such as strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC), textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) and high-performance fiber-reinforced cement-based composites (HPFRCC). All these new materials exhibit pseudo-ductile behavior resulting from the formation of multiple, fine cracks when subject to tensile loading. The use of such types of fiber-reinforced concrete could revolutionize the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, construction of new and strengthening and repair of existing buildings and structures in many areas of application. The SHCC4 Conference was the follow-up of three previous successful international events in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2009, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2011, and Dordrecht, The Netherlands in 2014.

Book excerpt: This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today's society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforcing bars are provided in reinforced concrete structures on account of conventional concretes negligible resistance to tension. However, corrosion of steel reinforcement inevitably occurs due to carbonation and chloride ingress, which significantly reduces the service life of structures. An alternative to this predicament is now feasible with the advent in cementitious material technologies, such as ultra-high-performance, self-consolidating, steel fiber reinforced concrete (UHP-SFRC). The keystone of safe and economically feasible designs with UHP-SFRC is dependant on its characterization in tension. Thus, in the present work, a detailed research study including both experimental and analytical components was conducted to investigate the tensile behaviour of UHP-SFRC: tensile strength was quantified and correlated through direct tension test (DTT), four-point bending test (FPBT), splitting tensile test, nonlinear finite element analysis and a calibrated empirical expression in relation to cylinder compressive strength. In addition, effects of important parameters on flexural strength including casting methodology, volumetric ratio of steel fibers, aspect ratio of bending prism and prism size were assessed. Moreover, the bilinear stress-strain and stress-crack mouth opening relationships of UHP-SFRC were derived according to the inverse analysis procedures proposed by Annex 8.1 of CSA-S6 (2018) and Annex U of CSA-A23.1 (2019). Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element analysis software, VecTor2, was employed to develop numerical models with the ability to match the response curves obtained from FPBT. Analytical results indicated that cracking strength of UHP-SFRC derived from the inverse analysis method was generally greater than those obtained from direct tension test, splitting tensile test, nonlinear finite element models and the calibrated empirical expression. Additionally, inverse analysis and finite element analysis results indicated that the majority of prisms exhibited tension hardening behaviour with a hardening ratio greater than 1.1 and an ultimate tensile strain greater than 0.1%. In addition to tension tests, a host of non-destructive tests were conducted to assess the physical properties and durability performance of UHP-SFRC.

Book excerpt: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced cement-based composite material with compressive strength of over 120 MPa, high toughness, and superior durability. Since its development in the early 1990s, UHPC has attracted great interest worldwide due to its advantages. This book covers material selection and mixture design methods for developing UHPC, as well as the performance of UHPC, including fresh and hardened properties, setting and hardening, dimensional stability, static and dynamic properties, durability, long-term properties, and self-healing properties. A range of potential applications and case studies are presented to illustrate how UHPC meets requirements for lightweight, high-rise, large-span, heavy-load bearing, fast-construction, and highly durable structures in civil and construction engineering. Also introduced is a typical new concrete, seawater sea-sand UHPC, which avoids the use of freshwater and river sand in marine construction. The first book to fully cover the design, performance, and applications of UHPC, this is ideal for concrete technologists, designers, contractors, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, facades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensile stress-strain response of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a fundamental mechanical behavior, and knowledge of this response is necessary for appropriate use of the concrete. To date, test methods aimed as assessing this property have generally found limited application due to their complexity and impracticality when considered in terms of a commercial testing environment. A joint research effort recently completed by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the French IFFSTAR (formerly LCPC) has succeeded both in further advancing the field of flexure testing as well as in developing a novel, practical direct tension test method. In the case of the direct tension test, this method can be considered as a reference method as it directly reports the uniaxial tensile stress-strain response of the concrete both pre- and post-cracking without requiring the use of any complex stress or strain transformations. Additionally, the method can be completed relatively quickly through the use of commercially available mechanical testing equipment on cast or extracted specimens of cross-sectional dimension up 51 mm square. The paper and presentation will discuss the direct tension and flexure test methods, as well as results obtained from applying these tests to multiple UHPC-class materials.
