Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) is a co-generated product of the cement manufacturing process. It is beneficial from the economic and environmental considerations to incorporate such materials in new construction. A Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) of adequate properties was developed using CKD. The research program optimized the developed materials based on fresh and hardened properties as well as durability characteristics. The CKD was obtained from four local cement manufacturing companies, which allowed for an unbiased and generalized understanding of the behaviour and properties of the CKD-incorporated CLSM. After the mixtures were optimized, four mixes were examined in laboratory mock-up trenches. This investigation showed promising results. The optimized CLSM was then used in actual field trenches. The evaluation showed promising results and confirmed the suitability of developed CLSMs in practical applications. It was found out in this research that sustainable development in the cement industry can be achieved by producing CLSM with moderate volumes of CKD. Such construction material reduces the use of Portland cement and consumes co-generated industrial products.

Book Synopsis Effects of Blends of Cement Kiln Dust and Fly Ash on Properties of Concrete by : Hamdi Celik Ozyildirim
Download or read book Effects of Blends of Cement Kiln Dust and Fly Ash on Properties of Concrete written by Hamdi Celik Ozyildirim and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated concretes containing cement kiln dust (CKD) and fly ash to determine whether satisfactory properties can be achieved for long-lasting performance in the field. The results indicate that certain combinations of cement, CKD, and fly ash may provide concretes with acceptable performance. A determination of acceptable combinations will require extensive study which was beyond the scope of this project. Excessive expansions occurred when CKD blends were used in mortars subjected to cyclic wetting and drying at a temperature of 80°C (176°F). The addition of CKD to fly ash concrete did not improve strength development, but did reduce the coulomb values (AASHTO T 277or ASTM C 1202) at early ages, indicating reduced chloride permeability. However, at later ages fly ash concretes containing cement with an alkali content of 0.70% or above had very low coulomb values indicating high resistance to chloride penetration irrespective of the alkali activation.
