Book excerpt: The goals of our research were to further the development of IR absorption tomography as a sensor for closed-loop control of combustion and propulsion systems of interest to the Navy, to apply IR absorption tomography to study mixing in forced-jet actuators, and to use POD analysis to investigate large scale structures in reacting jet flows and the potential for reduced order models of jet actuators. In the last year of the grant we expanded its scope to include the development of a camera system for measuring chemiluminescence from combustors to obtain a semi-quantitative measure of combustion heat release dynamics. Our research has been in collaboration with Drs. Orinstein and Kailasanth of the NRL and recently with Dr. Robert Schefer of Sandia National Laboratories. Major accomplishments during the grant were completion of an IR absorption facility and measurements on forced, square jets, refinement of our tomographic reconstruction algorithm - Adaptive Finite Domain Direct Inversion (AFDDI) - analysis of large eddy simulations of forced, reacting rectangular jets using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and in the past year work on the development of a new camera system for chemiluminescence emission tomography to obtain spatially resolved data on heat release dynamics. This work was a significant portion of two PhD theses, was reported in four AIAA preprints and is the subject of two papers in preparation for publication and an article appearing in a book based on papers presented at the 15th ONR Propulsion Meeting.

Book excerpt: Passive optical probes and high-resolution emission spectroscopy are used to provide a general-purpose real-time temperature and chemical species sensing capability. Probes can be inserted in the combustor, at the turbine inlet, in the augmenter, or at the engine exit with application as an engine development diagnostic tool that provides spatially resolved measurements of the key combustion parameters: temperature, CO concentration, and H2O concentration. Multiple probes are arrayed to collect the emitted infrared radiation over different views of the hot gas path. Line-of-sight averaged concentrations and temperatures are determined by spectral analysis of the emitted radiation along each line of sight (LOS). Spatial profiles may also be determined by simultaneous analysis of overlapping lines of sight. The collected infrared spectra contain optically thin and optically thick features that reflect the effects of emission and absorption within the combustion region. The known spectral structure of the component spectra can be used for the automated interpretation of the observed radiance spectra in terms of concentrations and temperatures along the line of sight, and in specific volume elements of overlapping lines of sight.

Book excerpt: "A technique termed "coherent, anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy" (CARS) has been developed at the Combustion and Carbonization Research Laboratory of CANMET's Energy Research Laboratories for the measurement of temperature and species concentration. The advantages of this technique over conventional probing methods are improved temporal and spatial resolution; it is nonintrusive and turbulence parameters can be determined. This report discusses the theoretical basis for such a technique and some of the practical considerations involved in the optical arrangement. To apply this technique successfully, it was necessary to develop sophisticated software and hardware. The incorporation of these and the optics into a CARS system is discussed, together with the theory of its application"--Abstract, p. iii.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes our development of spectroscopic chemical analysis techniques and spectral modeling for trace-gas measurements of highly-regulated low-concentration species present in flue gas emissions from utility coal boilers such as HCl under conditions of high humidity. Detailed spectral modeling of the spectroscopy of HCl and other important combustion and atmospheric species such as H 2 O, CO 2 , N 2 O, NO 2 , SO 2 , and CH 4 demonstrates that IR-laser spectroscopy is a sensitive multi-component analysis strategy. Experimental measurements from techniques based on IR laser spectroscopy are presented that demonstrate sub-ppm sensitivity levels to these species. Photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy is used to detect and quantify HCl at ppm levels with extremely high signal-to-noise even under conditions of high relative humidity. Additionally, cavity ring-down IR spectroscopy is used to achieve an extremely high sensitivity to combustion trace gases in this spectral region; ppm level CH 4 is one demonstrated example. The importance of spectral resolution in the sensitivity of a trace-gas measurement is examined by spectral modeling in the mid- and near-IR, and efforts to improve measurement resolution through novel instrument development are described. While previous project reports focused on benefits and complexities of the dual-etalon cavity ring-down infrared spectrometer, here details on steps taken to implement this unique and potentially revolutionary instrument are described. This report also illustrates and critiques the general strategy of IR- laser photodetection of trace gases leading to the conclusion that mid-IR laser spectroscopy techniques provide a promising basis for further instrument development and implementation that will enable cost-effective sensitive detection of multiple key contaminant species simultaneously.

Book excerpt: Chemical species tomography (CST) is an emerging diagnostic technique for estimating the spatial distribution of a chemical species of interest. This thesis focuses on using CST to detect and map fugitive hydrocarbon emissions resulting from crude oil refinement, where current methods of detecting and measuring these emissions can be costly and inaccurate. This technique utilizes multiple optical paths to measure path-integrated concentrations over a flow field that are used in reconstructions to obtain an estimated discrete distribution. Prior CST work has made use of diode lasers, ultraviolet differential optical absorption spectrometers, or Fourier transform infrared spectrometers. This thesis pioneers the use of broadband infrared open path detectors for CST. A theoretical background is laid out with a discussion of the fundamentals of how E-M waves interact with gas molecules, which underlies the CST measurement principle. This is followed by an explanation of monochromatic tomography, which involves solving a rank-deficient problem through the context of a Bayesian problem with prior information. Broadband tomography is then developed on that foundation, requiring a transfer function to linearize the problem. Details of a design overview is presented for four open path broadband detector and emitter pairs that were fabricated for use in lab-scale tomography experiments. Focusing on the mid-infrared ro-vibrational band of hydrocarbons at approximately 3.3 [mu]m, the pairs contain optical components suitable for operation at distances up to 10 m. These components include a thermal emitter, a collimating reflector, bandpass filter, focusing lens, and photovoltaic detector. The detector pairs were validated and transfer functions were built with a calibration process through a custom-built absorption cell with gaseous species of methane, propane, and ethylene. Using known concentrations of one species at a time, the transmittance of an optical pair was compared to an expected model that was constructed from spectral data compiled in the HITRAN or PNNL databases. Twelve tomography experiments followed, culminating in a final successful proof-of-concept tomographic reconstruction of a propane plume that was validated with flame ionization detector measurements.

Book excerpt: The need to develop very sensitive electro-optical instrumentation for atmospheric studies and defense monitoring systems is of great importance to the understanding of our environment and to the defense of our country. The development of a very versatile, reliable, and sensitive radiometer has provided a tool for performing a variety of significant infrared measurements from ground-based and aircraft platforms in the .8 to 7 micrometers spectral region. The development techniques of the radiometer, the capabilities of the developed instrument, and some typical emission measurements are presented in the paper. The instrument design incorporates various techniques to eliminate the need for cooling of the optics and structural parts, which avoids the inconveniences and difficulties associated with the operation of cryogenically cooled instruments, without significantly sacrificing sensitivity. The radiometer may be used in a selectable spectral wavelength and bandwidth mode, a limited spectral scanning mode, or a tuneable spectral wavelength mode. The various modes of operation are accomplished through the use of interference filters whose spectral characteristics are somewhat adjustable by properly controlling or setting their angular orientation. The simplicity of operation of the instrument has provided a means of measuring atmospheric airglow emissions and aurorally enhanced emissions in the .8 to 1.75 micrometers region on a routine basis. Also, through the use of a reticle chopper and background suppression technique, the same radiometer has been adapted for measurements of low energy, spatially concentrated emissions in the .8 to 7 micrometers region.

Book excerpt: Our recent work has concentrated on the development of high-resolution PET instrumentation reflecting in part the growing importance of PET in nuclear medicine imaging. We have developed a number of positron imaging instruments and have the distinction that every instrument has been placed in operation and has had an extensive history of application for basic research and clinical study. The present program is a logical continuation of these earlier successes. PCR-I, a single ring positron tomograph was the first demonstration of analog coding using BGO. It employed 4 mm detectors and is currently being used for a wide range of biological studies. These are of immense importance in guiding the direction for future instruments. In particular, PCR-II, a volume sensitive positron tomograph with 3 mm spatial resolution has benefited greatly from the studies using PCR-I. PCR-II is currently in the final stages of assembly and testing and will shortly be placed in operation for imaging phantoms, animals and ultimately humans. Perhaps the most important finding resulting from our previous study is that resolution and sensitivity must be carefully balanced to achieve a practical high resolution system. PCR-II has been designed to have the detection characteristics required to achieve 3 mm resolution in human brain under practical imaging situations. The development of algorithms by the group headed by Dr. Chesler is based on a long history of prior study including his joint work with Drs. Pelc and Reiderer and Stearns. This body of expertise will be applied to the processing of data from PCR-II when it becomes operational.
