Book excerpt: Background and objective of the research study The objective of this research study is the development of a forest stand growth model for the forests in the province Yunnan of southern China. The forest growth model is based on a position independent single tree growth modelling concept. The background for this objective is given by the heavy land use in the Yunnan province, leading to destruction of forest ecosystems, erosion and endangered wildlife. In addition the forest must meet the requirements of a growing and economically developing society that needs land for the farmers, timber for the industry and water for drinking. A forest stand growth model shall enable decision makers in forestry and politics to analyse decision alternatives on a sound empirical data basis and with statistically validated methods. Data from the Yunnan Forest Continuous Inventory Yunnan belongs to the southernmost provinces of China with a total area of about 390,000 km2. Since 1978 the forests of this province are monitored by the Yunnan Forest Continuous Inventory with survey years in 1978, 1988, 1992, 1997 and 2002. For this research study data from the three prefectures Simao, Lincang and Xishuangbanna with 21 counties. These inventories provide a huge data pool from the assessments on more than 800 inventory plots on forest land. Single tree information is available for tree diameter DBH as well as tree heights, stem numbers on the plots and tree species. Roughly 80,000 single tree DBH records are available and more than 2,000 single tree DBH and height increment records from subsequent inventories. In addition plot specific site information like elevation, slope, aspect, soil depth and soil type is available too, and on county level even climatic data are accessible like mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, evaporation and radiation. Developing a position independent single tree growth model Beneath the objective to build a forest stand growth model some additional obj.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) book provides a complete introduction to this widely applied computer model. The GFPM is a dynamic economic equilibrium model that is used to predict production, consumption, trade, and prices of 14 major forest products in 180 interacting countries. The book thoroughly documents the methods, data, and computer software of the model, and demonstrates the model's usefulness in addressing international economic and environmental issues. The Global Forest Products Model is written by an international multi-disciplinary team and is ideal for graduate students and professionals in forestry, natural resource economics, and related fields. It explains trends in world forest industries in the simplest terms by explaining the economic theory underlying the model. It describes six applications of the GFPM, three of which were commissioned by the Food Agriculture of the United Nations, the USDA Forest Service, and New Zealand Research. The authors show how to apply the model to real issues such as the effects of the Asian economic crisis on the forest sector, the effects of eliminating tariffs on international trade and production, and the international effects of national environmental policies. They provide complete explanations on how to use the GFPM software, prepare the data, make the forecasts, and summarize the results with tables and graphs. Comprehensive, and rigorous description of the world forestry sector Written by an international multi-disciplinary team Thorough description of data and methods In-depth applications to modern economic and policy issues Detailed documentation of the computer software Suitable for students, researchers, and decision makers

Book excerpt: This paper presents a framework for analyzing tropical deforestation and reforestation using the von Thunen model as its starting point: land is allocated to the use which yields the highest rent, and the rents of various land uses are determined by location. Forest cover change therefore becomes a question of changes in rent of forest versus non-forest use. While this is a simple and powerful starting point, more intriguing issues arise when this is applied to analyze real cases. An initial shift in the rent of one particular land use generates feedbacks which affect the rent of all land uses. For example, a new technology in extensive agriculture should make this land use more profitable and lead to more forest clearing, but general equilibrium effects (changes in prices and local wages) can modify or even reverse this conclusion. Another issue is how a policy change or a shift in broader market, technological, and institutional forces will affect various land use rents. The paper deals with three such areas: technological progress in agriculture, land tenure regimes, and community forest management. The second part of the paper links the von Thunen framework to the forest transition theory. The forest transition theory describes a sequence over time where a forested region goes through a period of deforestation before the forest cover eventually stabilizes and starts to increase. This sequence can be seen as a systematic pattern of change in the agricultural and forest land rents over time. Increasing agricultural rent leads to high rates of deforestation. The slow-down of deforestation and eventual reforestation is due to lower agricultural rents (the economic development path) and higher forest rent (the forest scarcity path). Various forces leading to these changes are discussed and supported by empirical evidence from different tropical regions.
