This amplifier exhibits a maximum noise figure of 8.6 dB over 100 percent of the band and a 7.5 dB maximum noise figure over 60 percent of the band. Nominal small signal gain is greater than 30 dB, and saturated power output ranges from +5 to +10 dBm in an 18 pound, 4.5 inch diameter package. The design of this broadband amplifier is a logical extension of several known techniques including the fabrication of uniform dense cathode, low-loss circuits, broadband low-reflection couplers, and uniform, low transverse field permanent magnets, as well as considerable experience and knowledge gained in the earlier development of narrow band amplifiers in X- and K sub u-band. The performance of this X- and K sub u-band amplifier is superior to presently available low-noise amplifiers in K sub u-band alone, and it opens up applications for new wideband receiving systems with reduced complexity and cost. Book excerpt: The report contains the preliminary results of a program for development of two low noise permanent magnet focussed traveling wave X-K-Band amplifier tubes packaged with integral power supply. The amplifiers are required to provide instantaneous coverage of the band 8 to 18 GHz with 25 db minimum gain, total gain variation under 6 db, noise figure 7.5 db maximum, and output power 5 dbm (min). A helix circuit dispersion has been tailored for gain flatness with circuit voltages between 700 and 1000 volts. An investigation of the cause of excess circuit loss due to 'alligator' skin effect was concluded with visibly smoother coated wire after 'scrunch, ' and a 1 to 2 db lower insertion loss at Ku-band. Book excerpt: A low noise traveling wave tube amplifier packaged with integral solid state power supply and permanent magnet focusing was developed to cover the frequency band 18 to 40 GHz. The amplifier noise figure lies between 13 and 14 dB; the minimum small signal gain is 32 dB, and the gain variation is plus or minus 2.7 dB. The minimum saturated power output is + 6 dbm. The tube employs a hollow beam six anode low noise electron gun. A unique ridge waveguide coupler was developed to cover the double waveguide band. A key factor in reducing gain variation was development of an improved 'skrunching' method for the fluted glass helix support structure. The tube completes a series of four low noise traveling wave tube amplifiers covering the 0.5 to 40 GHz frequency band. (Author).

This book was released on 1967 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report for a program in which two very low-noise traveling-wave amplifiers covering the frequency range from 2.0 to 8.0 GHz have been developed. The amplifiers are focused by permanent magnet and are packaged with an integral power supply. Hence, by simply plugging the device into 115 volt, 60 Hz source one obtains a small signal amplification of 28 plus or minus 3dB with a noise figure less than 6 dB and a minimum saturated power output of 6.7 dBm or more over the entire double octave frequency range. The principal design techniques used in attaining this new ultra broadband amplifier include: a hollow beam low-noise gun having broadband characteristics; a straight field permanent magnet focusing arrangement; a severed helix where the input half is designed to minimize noise figure and the output half is designed to maximize power output while the combination is designed to minimize gain variation. The development of this ultra-broadband low-noise amplifier leads the way for development of similar amplifiers covering 0.5 to 2 GHz and 8 to 18 GHz. When these have been developed it will be possible to design wideband receivers and spectrum analyzers which are about half as complicated as present designs in the RF section. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program is the attainment of low-noise amplification over two octaves in a single traveling-wave tube. Noise figure is to be less than 6.5 dB from 0.5 to 2.1 GHz with a minimum of three milliwatts saturated power output. The work described herein has been aimed primarily at raising the power output to the required three milliwatt level and achieving uniform gain over the full band. This has been sought through the use of a servered helix, with the output section operating with higher voltage and lower gamma than the input, or low-noise section. Good results have been obtained with this method, the power output being greater than two milliwatts over practically the entire band. It is concluded that this approach is entirely feasible technically, and that future effort will be expended applying it to reduce gain variation at an increased power level. At present, noise figure of the tube is within the specification over all of the band. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes the first quarter results on a program concerned with the development of a 3 dB figure, 4 pound, X-band low-noise TWT amplifier. The design approach is described along with the results of some key experiments. Noise figures of 3 to 4 dB have been achieved when focusing is by means of a high field solenoid. Several lightweight high field PM and SRPM magnet assemblies have been designed and parts ordered. Both hollow beam and solid beam tubes are being evaluated in these focusing systems. (Author).

Book excerpt: A final report is made for a program in which a low-noise traveling-wave amplifier covering the frequency range from 0.5 to 2.1 GHz was developed. The amplifier is focused by a permanent magnet and packaged with an integral power supply. Hence, by simply plugging the device into 115 volt, 60 Hz source one obtains a small signal amplification of 31 plus or minus 1.5 dB with a noise figure less than 6.5 dB and a minimum saturated power output of 4.8 dBm or more over the entire double octave frequency range. The principal design techniques used in attaining this new ultra broadband amplifier include: (a) A hollow beam low-noise gun having broadband characteristics; (b) A straight field permanent magnet focusing arrangement; and (c) A severed helix where the input half is designed to minimize noise figure and the output half is designed to maximize power output while the combination is designed to minimize gain variation.
