Book excerpt: The energy storage system is the Beta Battery, an electrochemical energy storage system based on liquid sodium and liquid sulfur and a form of aluminum oxide called beta alumina. The beta alumina is a solid, which is unique in that it is also an electrolytic conductor for sodium ions at the temperature of operation in the 300 to 350 degrees Centigrade range. The intended application is for load leveling; the battery also promises to be os use for electric vehicles.

Book Synopsis The Development of Advanced Lead-acid Batteries for Utility Applications by :
Download or read book The Development of Advanced Lead-acid Batteries for Utility Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical advances in lead-acid battery design have created new opportunities for battery systems in telecommunications, computer backup power and vehicle propulsion power. Now the lead-acid battery has the opportunity to become a major element in the mix of technologies used by electric utilities for several power quality and energy and resource management functions within the network. Since their introduction into industrial applications, Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries have received widespread acceptance and use in critical telecommunications and computer installations, and have developed over 10 years of reliable operational history. As further enhancements in performance, reliability and manufacturing processes are made, these VRLA batteries are expanding the role of battery-based energy storage systems within utility companies portfolios. This paper discusses the rationale and process of designing, optimizing and testing VRLA batteries for specific utility application requirements.

Download or read book Electric Vehicles written by DIANE Publishing Company and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996-02 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1991, the three domestic auto companies formed a partnership known as the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) to jointly sponsor advanced battery research. Later that year, the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) and representatives of the electric utility industry agreed to work together with the consort. This report determines 1. the progress that the USABC has made toward reaching its long-term and mid-term goals; 2. the funding that has been spent as of FY 1995 and the additional amounts, if any, that will be needed; and 3. the role of the DoE in managing the consortium.

Book Synopsis Materials for Advanced Batteries by : D. Murphy
Download or read book Materials for Advanced Batteries written by D. Murphy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of a NATO Science Committee Institute on "Materials for Advanced Batteries" was suggested to JB and DWM by Dr. A. G. Chynoweth. His idea was to bring together experts in the field over the entire spectrum of pure research to applied research in order to familiarize everyone with potentially interesting new systems and the problems involved in their development. Dr. M. C. B. Hotz and Professor M. N. Ozdas were instrumental in helping organize this meeting as a NATO Advanced Science Institute. An organlzlng committee consisting of the three of us along with W. A. Adams, U. v Alpen, J. Casey and J. Rouxel organized the program. The program consisted of plenary talks and poster papers which are included in this volume. Nearly half the time of the conference was spent in study groups. The aim of these groups was to assess the status of several key aspects of batteries and prospects for research opportunities in each. The study groups and their chairmen were: Current status and new systems J. Broadhead High temperature systems W. A. Adams Interface problems B. C. H. Steele Electrolytes U. v Alpen Electrode materials J. Rouxel These discussions are summarized in this volume. We and all the conference participants are most grateful to Professor J. Rouxel for suggesting the Aussois conference site, and to both he and Dr. M. Armand for handling local arrangements.

Book Synopsis Advanced Battery Technologies by : Manuela González
Download or read book Advanced Battery Technologies written by Manuela González and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been increasingly contributing to the development of novel engineering systems with energy storage requirements. LIBs are playing an essential role in our society, as they are being used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from consumer electronics, electric mobility, renewable energy storage, biomedical applications, or aerospace systems. Despite the remarkable achievements and applicability of LIBs, there are several features within this technology that require further research and improvements. In this book, a collection of 10 original research papers addresses some of those key features, including: battery testing methodologies, state of charge and state of health monitoring, and system-level power electronics applications. One key aspect to emphasize when it comes to this book is the multidisciplinary nature of the selected papers. The presented research was developed at university departments, institutes and organizations of different disciplines, including Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science or Material Science, to name a few examples. The overall result is a book that represents a coherent collection of multidisciplinary works within the prominent field of LIBs.
