Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to measurement of absolute concentration of hydroxyl radicals in cold atmospheric discharges is described. Though only the case of OH is presented, the method can be directly applied to other molecules as well. Starting from the rate equations for the LIF process, the main formulas for two- and multi-level excitation scheme are derived. It is also shown how to use partially saturated LIF in practice, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio. Practical tips for automating the data evaluation are given, allowing processing large data sets, particularly suitable for planar measurements. Gas temperature estimation from fluorescence on different rotational absorption lines is shown as an attractive method for obtaining temperature maps with high spatial resolution. The important aspects of calibration are discussed, particularly the overlap of the laser line with the selected absorption line and the measurement of the Rayleigh scattering for sensitivity calibration, together with the common sources of errors. The application of OH(A, v' = 0 ← X, v" = 0) excitation scheme to the effluent of atmospheric pressure plasma jet ignited in argon and of OH(A, v' = 1 ← X, v" = 0) to the plasma of coplanar surface barrier discharge in air and in water vapor is shown.

Book excerpt: The hydroxyl radical OH and hydroperoxy radical HO2 radicals are key species in many oxidation processes in the atmosphere. The degradation of volatile organic compounds under tropospheric conditions is induced by reactions with hydroxyl radicals followed by the subsequent chemistry of the initial OH oxidation products with O2. This thesis was focused on the kinetic study of some of these atmospherically relevant reactions to better understand their oxidation mechanisms using an experimental system of laser photolysis coupled to Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF, for OH radical) and continuous-wave Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (cw-CRDS, for OH, HO2 and RO2 radicals) detection techniques. After determining the infrared spectrum of OH, HO2 and CH3O2 radicals in the near infrared region and the absorption cross-sections of few selected lines, four systems were studied with the above mentioned techniques: CH3O2 + OH, C2H5O2 + OH, C3H7O2 + OH and C4H9O2 + OH. The rate constant and the HO2 yield of the four reactions were determined. In addition, the rate constants of few secondary reactions such as CH3O + HO2, CH3O + CH3O or OH + HO2 have been determined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaining a quantitative understanding of many aspects of the earth's climate system requires development of new detection methods for key atmospheric species and their incorporation into chemical sensors with high sensitivity, specificity, and time response. The authors have initiated a research program to develop these new chemical-sensing capabilities. The species they have targeted initially are oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, specifically NO and S02 These molecules play a central role in the earth's climate, and anthropogenic activities (primarily fossil-fuel combustion) are the dominant source of both species. They are exploring the use of single-mode fiber lasers and amplifiers as compact, lightweight sources of tunable, narrow-bandwidth, deep-UV radiation. They have also begun spectroscopic studies to optimize UV laser-induced fluorescence for detection of S02 with high sensitivity and specificity.

Bischel and coworkers have provided a detailed description of two-photon excitation fluorescence in the detection of atoms generated in a low pressure discharge and its possible application as a diagnostic tool in flame and plasmas. It is also believed that such techniques can be useful in detecting molecular transients which are difficult to detect otherwise as demonstrated in two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection of NO. In this paper, we discuss our recent two-photon LIF studies on I and Br atoms, which are produced via laser photolysis of molecular precursors. The two-photon LIF study of HS and DS radicals is presented as a test case for the detection of other important radical species such as C2H and CH3, which are currently being investigated in our laboratory. In addition, excitation of three-photon resonances of I2, N2, and H2 is discussed.

Book excerpt: Finally, the fs-TALIF diagnostic is used in an atmospheric-pressure combustion environment, where plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) is used to augment flame characteristics. Fs-TALIF measurements of atomic hydrogen and oxygen are compared with hydroxyl radical number densities obtained with ns laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements, to understand OH production mechanisms in the discharge occurring in the hot, downstream products of a premixed hydrocarbon/air flame. The fs-TALIF diagnostic provides fluorescence measurements more accurately from the PAC-produced atomic species, due to simultaneous measurement of quenching rates and reduced photolytic production in the hydrocarbon flames.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have also measured the kinetics and products of a reaction between gas-phase ozone and anthracene adsorbed at the air-aqueous interface. The reactions at the "uncoated" air-water interface and at an interface consisting of a monolayer of various organic compounds were studied. In all the cases, the reaction follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, in which ozone first adsorbs to the air-aqueous interface, and then reacts with adsorbed anthracene. For typical atmospheric ozone concentrations, the estimated reactive uptake coefficient ranges from 2 x 10-8 to 3 x 10-7 depending on the nature of the air-aqueous interface. Smaller (C4, C6) carboxylic acids at the interface inhibit the reaction (compared to the "clean" water surface); 1-octanol enhances it. Under some circumstances, oxidation by ozone on aqueous surfaces may be more important in the atmosphere than gas phase oxidation by OH radicals. The fate of atmospheric semi-volatile organic compounds (SOCs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) depends, in part, on their distribution between the gas phase and particulate phases, and oxidation reactions. In the daytime troposphere, photochemically produced OH radicals dominate these reactions, whereas chlorine atoms may contribute to the oxidation of certain PAHs in coastal areas. In the dark, oxidation by nitrate radicals (NO3) may also be important, whereas ozone can contribute to the oxidation both during the day and at night. We have developed a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method to study adsorption and oxidation of PAHs at the air-aqueous interface. This method allows to directly probe the mechanisms and extent of PAH uptake on aqueous surfaces. The kinetics of the adsorption of anthracene and pyrene onto "pure" water and water coated with an organic film were measured. The surface uptake coefficients of both PAHs are estimated to be on the order of 10-5, and increase by a factor of 2--3 for uptake to the 1-octanol coated water surface. However, the surface uptake of pyrene to a hexanoic-acid-coated aqueous surface does not display this enhancement. Resolved fluorescence spectra of pyrene adsorbed onto 1-octanol-coated surfaces indicate that pyrene is in a less polar environment than when adsorbed at the hexanoic-acid-coated surfaces.
