Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential carrier phase GPS measurements are capable of giving centimeter-level accuracies. These accuracies have many potential applications for safety and control of various types of vehicles. For this research, a real- time guidance system is developed. The real-time guidance system can be divided into two components: hardware and software. The hardware component consists of two GPS receivers (one base, one mobile), two wireless 115 Kbaud transceivers, and two laptop computers. One computer is for the reference station and other isfor the mobile receiver interface and graphical display. The guided vehicle is agolf car called the Remote Sensing Autonomous Vehicle for EN (RAVEN). The research concentrated on developing real-time data processing algorithms and using these algorithms to show guidance information to the user via a graphical interface. The developed software reads the real-time GPS data using an RS-232 interface and converts it to a usable form for the data processing algorithms. The data processing algorithm compares the real-time data with the desired trackand outputs the guidance information to the guidance display. Based on the information from the guidance display, the user is able to drive on the desired track. Four tests were performed to evaluate the guidance system performance andhuman factors under different circumstances. These tests include update rate tests, a single instrument test, varying parameter tests, and an under hood test. Tests results and user feedback show that the system performs well under most conditions.

Book excerpt: An operational prototype of a ground vehicle that may be used as a test bed for future experiments in autonomous guidance, navigation, and control is developed. Key topics in the research include vehicle dynamics and modeling, inertial navigation, hardware/software integration, and system identification. The vehicle dynamics are derived from a simplified 3 degree-of-freedom (2 translational axes and 1 rotational axis) model, and inertial navigation equations are developed for the 2-dimensional, planar case. Descriptions of the hardware subsystems, which include the vehicle, onboard computer, sensors, actuators, and communications radio are presented. The execution of the real-time, onboard software used to perform control input/output as well as the ground station software application is outlined. Finally, the methodology and results of system identification experiments used to estimate the servo actuators and vehicle modeling parameters are given. Field testing demonstrated successful execution of the onboard and ground station software applications as well as the sensors and actuators subsystems. The vehicle was operated open-loop by uploading a sequence of steering and throttle commands from the ground station, and the sensor measurement data was recorded. The recorded data was used to estimate modeling parameters of the servo actuator mechanisms and the vehicle. The servo actuator models obtained from identification resulted in good matching between the simulated and physical responses with little deviation. The estimated vehicle parameters obtained from identification also resulted in good matching between the simulated and physical responses. Deviations between the simulated and physical responses are likely due to measurement errors present in the calculation of the vehicle states. The results of this research provide a proof-of-concept and demonstrate the viability of constructing an operational platform for vehicle autonomy.

Book excerpt: "With ever-increasing pressures on world agriculture in both economic and environmental terms, application of the concept of precision agriculture is one way of enabling farmers and producers to cope. ‘Doing arable agriculture and horticulture more precisely’ means that the use of inputs is optimised, crop yield and quality are maximised and leakage of agro-chemicals and fertilisers to the environment is minimised. This publication contains papers presented at the 6th European Conference on Precision Agriculture. The papers reflect the wide range of disciplines encompassed by precision agriculture, including: soil physics, crop physiology, agronomy, IT, agricultural technology, sensor technology, remote sensing, geostatistics and environmental science. The wide range of research topics reported will be a valuable resource for researchers, advisors, teachers and professionals in agriculture long after the conference has finished. Peer-reviewed papers from the 3rd European Conference on Precision Livestock Farming are presented in a companion proceedings, Precision livestock farming ’07."

Book excerpt: Kinematic Systems in Geodesy, Surveying, and Remote Sensing provides a state-of-the-art discussion on the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in combination with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for detailed sensing of the Earth's surface. Divided into two parts, the book first discusses GPS/INS with respect to theory and modelling, equipment trends, estimation methods and quality control, algorithms, and software trends. It then describes the applications of these kinematic systems to positioning and navigation, modelling and measurement of gravity, gravity gradiometry, and altitude. This collection of 63 presentations documents the symposium of the same name held in Banff, Alberta, September 1990. It is the sixth volume of the International Association of Geodesy Symposia series published by Springer-Verlag New York.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer oriented integrated approach for the automatic generation of symbolical expressions for the position, velocity and acceleration problems of spatial, multiple loop multibody systems is developed. All processing steps, from the topological analysis of the interconnection structure to the final production of executable statements in a standard programming language, such as "C, ', are integrated into one single single piece of code, written in Mathematica. Special subsystems, such as planar or spherical mechanism parts, subsystems featuring closed form, i.e., analytic solutions, and subsystems which have to be solved iteratively, are recognized and processed accordingly. These tasks involve, among others, the generation of minimal cycle sets, the detection of invariant transformation groups in loops, and the recognition of recursive solution flows in multiple loop mechanisms. All processing steps are fully operational and produce the desired expressions from a minimal input comprising the system adjacency matrix, the list of variable joint parameters, and the desired set of input variables. A SOLVAS-compatible interface insures the applicability of the package in the setting of vehicle dynamics by its integration in the libraries developed at the System Simulation & Technical Division Group at U.S. Army TARDEC. The procedures and the code are illustrated by several examples.
