Book excerpt: The presence of radon-222 in soil gas and ground water can indicate the existence of nearby uranium deposits even when heavy overburdens completely absorb the associated gamma radiation. Techniques to detect and measure radon have evolved during the past several years to the point where radon prospecting is routinely employed in a number of countries. A program to develop and field test a prototype system for measuring radon from soil gas and water is described. A prototype system employing a flow through scintillation detector was designed and constructed, utilizing standard commercial components, to provide a fieldworthy unit for testing the system concepts. Laboratory and preliminary field tests of this unit indicate that it can detect anomalous radon levels of less than 10 picoCuries per liter (pCi/l) in soil gas and ground water.

Book excerpt: The measurement of radon (Rn-222) in soil gas aids in uranium exploration by indicating indirectly the presence of buried ore bodies. Intrest in this exploration methodology has led to the development of various radon measurement techniques which detect the presence of soil-gas radon, both directly and/or indirectly. To establish the relative merit of these new radon measurement techniques, Bendix Field Engineering Corporation has tested a variety of them using existing uranium occurrences located in the Red Desert area of south-central Wyoming. The following soil-gas radon measurement techniques were tested: a prototype microprocessor-controlled emanometer; a commercially available emanometer; alpha-track detectors equipped with two types of detector material (carbonate and nitrate), and equipped with and without membranes for thoron separation; radon adsorption on activated charcoal; and partial extraction of lead-210 from soil samples. These techniques were compared for relative sensitivity, variability, signal-to-background contrast, and correlation. The radon measurements obtained were also correlated to the equivalent uranium in soil, as determined radiometrically. From approximately 34 replicate samples, the variability associated with a technique was lowest with the TSA emanometer (13%). The EDA emanometer showed 31% and Track Etch carbonate/open cup (C/O) 27%. The best signal-to-background ratio, 2.55, was obtained by the EDA emanometer; the Track Etch nitrate/members cup (N/M) was a close second with 2.45. All signal-to-background ratios were greater than 2.0 except for the TSA emanometer with 1.87. All the techniques measured a sufficient number of anomalous values to locate the subsurface ore body.

Abstract: The goal of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is to determine the last unknown neutrino mixing angle θ13, in sin22θ13 to sensitivity better than 0.01 at 90% confidential level in three years of running. In order to reach the goal, background from natural radiation should be controlled less than 50 Hz, accordingly radon, which is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas, is one of the factors need to be monitored. A High-sensitivity and High-reliability Hong Kong (H3) radon monitoring system is developed to support the slow control system of the experiment. It achieves the sensitivity requirement and fulfills the data acquisition specification by using an enlarged sample chamber, an improved electronic and a designed software, in addition to the dehumidifier system for long term use. Four final products of the radon detector were well calibrated and tested before application; the sensitivities of counted progenies Po-218 and Po-214 are 3.65 0.37 x10-2 cpm/Bq-m3 (C.F.is 27.42.7 Bq/m3/cpm) and 3.94 0.40 x10-2 cpm/Bq-m3 (C.F. is 25.42.5 Bq/m3/cpm). Its performance is the highest among the same type of commercial available products. This radon monitoring system has been successfully taking data as the background measurement of the experiment for more than half a year, and will continue to provide useful information for the following several years. From the results, the radon levels in the air in Experimental Halls and in the water of water systems were higher than expected, but still at the acceptable levels. Further works have to be done to control them at preferred levels. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5053415 Subjects: Radon measures

Book excerpt: Radon-222 gas has unique properties allowing it to be used as an indicator for the presence of organic phase liquids in the saturated zone. It naturally occurs in soils. It is radioactive, making quantitative detection straight forward. A noble gas, it is chemically inert and does not react with aquifer media. Finally, radon has an affinity to concentrate in nonaqueous phase liquids. A proposed linear equilibrium partitioning model was tested by batch equilibration with the pore fluid to establish the deficit in aqueous radon concentrations that results from its partitioning into the residual saturation of the organic phase (Soltrol-220). Five sets of experiments were run on columns with 0.0, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 8.0 percent residual soltrol fractions. The model was found to accurately represent the partitioning process. A one-dimensional physical model was run to see if the data from the partitioning experiments could be successfully applied to predict the aqueous radon concentrations in a more complex situation. The results indicate that radon-222 has great potential to be used as a means of detecting and quantifying the presence of residual organic phase liquids in the saturated zone.

Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure. The material in the handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.--Publisher's description.
