Book excerpt: "Contaminant source release history is a necessary element of contaminant mass transport simulation in the saturated zone. The source release history is unknown at many sites, and many inverse models have been developed to define finite release histories. To define a likely domain of three source history parameters, a mass balancebased one dimensional approach is developed and tested by discretizing the spatial domain into bands. By incorporating the approach in a spreadsheet model, observed data is represented by both variable length and constant length bands of analysis. Each representation of observed data was tested to determine the most appropriate band geometry for improved model calibration and constant length bands results were more accurate than results of variable length bands. The source history parameter domains predicted by the model are then evaluated with Monte Carlo analysis. After datasets of artificial transport systems are developed and evaluated with the model, actual site data from a Superfund site is input to the model that provides reasonable results of the source history parameters. Limitations of the model require site characteristics that include negligible diffusion, a uniform regional flow field, and isotropic and homogeneous aquifer media"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book excerpt: The groundwater contaminant transport has been analyzed for stationary (steady) and non-stationary (unsteady) flow of velocity. This velocity has been considered for both deterministic and stochastic flows, and the stochasticity has been generated through both Brownian motion (Gaussian) and fractional Brownian motion (heavy tailed). The variance behavior for stationary and non-stationary flow having heavy tailed and Brownian motion has been analyzed. The correlation in the velocity has been accessed through the covariance behavior. Furthermore, diffusion coefficient has been analyzed for various flow processes. A numerical model has been developed using one dimensional unsteady fractional stochastic transport equation to generate the realization-wise concentration of contaminants using Monte Carlo simulations. Then, the ensemble average of the realizations have been found, which is equivalent to the probability density function (PDF) of the concentration of contaminants. Fokker-Plank equation has been modeled numerically to generate PDF for the concentration of contaminants. It has been observed that the Fokker-Plank equation is describing well the ensemble average obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, long memory has been observed for fractional cases, which explains the practically observed heavy tails in the transport process. Correlation function has been plotted for the ensemble of concentration to explain the physical basis for heavy tails observed in nature.

One of the most essential topics addressed in the book is the migration and fate of radionuclides. Model development is motivated by field data analysis from a number of radioactively contaminated sites in the Russian Federation: near-surface radioactive waste disposal sites and deep-well radioactive waste injection sites. They play a unique role in the advancement of knowledge of the subsurface behavior and fate of many hazardous radionuclides and can be considered as field-scale laboratories. Thus, the book, along with theoretical findings, contains field information, which will facilitate the understanding of subsurface solute transport and the development of a methodology for practical applications to groundwater hydrology.

Book excerpt: This research project investigated the coupled effects of uncertain contaminant source morphology (organic immiscible liquids distribution and composition) and aquifer properties on predicting solute transport in saturated groundwater systems contaminated with residual Organic Immiscible Liquids (OIL's). Research efforts focused on the development of multiple stochastic inverse models for characterizing contaminant fluxes in the near field and for characterizing NAPL distributions within source. In addition, work was conducted on the forward stochastic modeling, that is, to evaluate individual and collective impacts of uncertain spatially and temporally variable source morphological characteristics on subsurface solute transport predictions. The study also involved 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional experimental efforts to study bench-scale and intermediate-scale uncertainties associate with OIL sources. These studies focused on describing dissolution from multi-component OIL's at varying residual fluid saturations and distributions, and the characterization of OIL sources using partitioning and interfacial tracers. As a final component of the project, the various stochastic models developed were evaluated using data from the pilot-scale field experiments conducted at Hill AFB, Columbus AFB, and Base Borden, Ontario, Canada. Data derived from partitioning/interfacial tracers and far-field dissolved OIL component distributions were used with the stochastic models to characterize OIL sources at each site.

Book excerpt: A reliability approach for probabilistic modeling of one-dimensional non-reactive and reactive transport in porous media provides two important quantitative results: (1) an estimate of the probability that dimensionless concentration equals or exceeds some specified level and, (2) the sensitivity of the probabilistic outcome to likely changes in each uncertain variable. The reliability approach is particularly attractive because it can incorporate various marginal probability density functions (PDF) for any of the uncertain variables. In this work uncertain variables include: groundwater flow velocity, diffusion coefficient, dispersivity, distribution coefficient, porosity and bulk density. The primary objective is to examine how the probabilistic outcome is influenced by choice of marginal PDF, correlation and magnitude of uncertainty for the variables. Because little information exists concerning the statistical characteristics of these uncertain variables, the investigation assumes a wide range of PDF types and statistical values in order to identify and isolate the most critical issues for further study. Results indicate that, even for very slow mean velocity, the probability estimate for non-reactive transport is most sensitive to uncertain flow velocity. For practical analysis, it appears acceptable to treat dispersivity as a deterministic constant. For non-reactive transport, correlation between flow velocity and diffusion coefficient has a slight impact, but correlation among other combinations of uncertain variables is not important. 34 refs., 10 tabs.

The basic approach of this book is to accurately describe the underlying physics of groundwater flow and solute transport in heterogeneous porous media, starting at the microscopic level, and to rigorously derive their mathematical representation at the macroscopic levels. The well-posed, macroscopic mathematical models are formulated for saturated, single phase flow, as well as for unsaturated and multiphase flow, and for the transport of single and multiple chemical species. Numerical models are presented and computer codes are reviewed, as tools for solving the models. The problem of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers is examined and modeled. The issues of uncertainty in model input data and output are addressed. The book concludes with a chapter on the management of groundwater resources. Although one of the main objectives of this book is to construct mathematical models, the amount of mathematics required is kept minimal.

Non-point source (NPS) pollution in the vadose zone (simply defined as the layer of soil extending from the soil surface to the groundwater table) is a global environmental problem. Characteristically, NPS pollutants are widespread and occasionally ubiquitous in extent, thus making remediation efforts difficult and complex; have the potential for maintaining a relatively long active presence in the global ecosystem; and may result in long?]term, chronic health effects in humans and other life forms. Similar to other global environmental issues, the knowledge and information required to address the problem of NPS pollutants in the vadose zone cross several technological and subdisciplinary lines: spatial statistics, geographic information systems (GIS), hydrology, soil science, and remote sensing. Cooperation between disciplines and scientific societies is essential to address the problem. Evidence of such cooperation was the jointly sponsored American Geophysical Union Chapman/Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Outreach Conference that occurred in October 1997, entitled “Applications of GIS, Remote Sensing, Geostatistics, and Solute Transport Modeling to the Assessment of Non-Point Source Pollution in the Vadose Zone.” The objective of the conference and this book, which was developed from the conference, was to explore current multidisciplinary research for assessing NPS pollution in soil and groundwater resources.

CMS can be quickly and easily applied, yet it is still versatile enough to be used for a variety of conditions ranging from short term spill modeling to multi-year simulations of contaminant fate in stream water and bottom sediments. The model can be applied for both organic and inorganic contaminants. Suspended solids can be transported or a steady-state concentration may be input. Steady-state, uniform hydraulic conditions are assumed within the modeled reach, which greatly reduces model complexity. A model application may consist of one or more reaches connected in series or in a branched network. Possible sediment model configurations include: 1) water column only, 2) water column and mixed sediment layer, and 3) water column, mixed sediment layer, and deep sediment layer.
