Book excerpt: The necessity to reduce CO2 emissions has increased the driving force for the cement research community to develop alternatives to traditional Portland cement (PC). One of the alternative cements being investigated is calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CS ̅A), first developed commercially in China in the 1970's. CS ̅A cements are produced by clinkering together limestone, bauxite, clay and calcium sulfate to produce mainly ye'elimite (C4A3S ̅) and belite (C2S). Due to the presence of ye'elimite, SO3 content is typically between 6 - 10 wt%. The abundance of elemental sulfur arising from the desulfurisation of oil and gas and its use to produce CS ̅A clinkers were the starting points of the Green Concrete Project (GCP), which aimed to develop a novel approach to produce CS ̅A cement via the combustion of elemental sulfur, recycling this by-product and reducing the dependence on hydrocarbon fuels. Integrating the current knowledge on the production of CS ̅A, a new generation of CS ̅A belite calcium sulfoaluminate (BCS ̅A) and belite-ye'elimite-ternesite (BYT) clinkers incorporating the combustion of elemental sulfur has been successfully developed and produced in a pilot plant production process. A high-temperature thermodynamic model was developed to predict stable assemblages and to complement and validate experimental results. Within the frame of the GCP, the title thesis focused on collecting conditional thermodynamic data for ye'elimite and ternesite (enthalpy of formation) that were determined experimentally using isothermal conduction calorimetry. The enthalpies of formation of ye'elimite and ternesite at 25 °C were determined to be -8523 kJ/mol and -5993 kJ/mol, respectively.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portland cement concrete, the most widely used manufactured material in the world, is made primarily from water, mineral aggregates, and portland cement. The production of portland cement is energy intensive, accounting for 2% of primary energy consumption and 5% of industrial energy consumption globally. Moreover, Portland cement manufacturing contributes significantly to greenhouse gases and accounts for 5% of the global CO2 emissions resulting from human activity. The primary objective of this research was to explore methods of reducing the environmental impact of cement production while maintaining or improving current performance standards. Two approaches were taken, 1.) incorporation of waste materials in portland cement synthesis, and 2.) optimization of an alternative environmental friendly binder, calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement. These approaches can lead to less energy consumption, less emission of CO2, and more reuse of industrial waste materials for cement manufacturing. In the portland cement part of the research, portland cement clinkers conforming to the compositional specifications in ASTM C 150 for Type I cement were successfully synthesized from reagent-grade chemicals with 0% to 40% fly ash and 0% to 60% slag incorporation (with 10% intervals), 72.5% limestone with 27.5% fly ash, and 65% limestone with 35% slag. The synthesized portland cements had similar early-age hydration behavior to commercial portland cement. However, waste materials significantly affected cement phase formation. The C3S--C2S ratio decreased with increasing amounts of waste materials incorporated. These differences could have implications on proportioning of raw materials for cement production when using waste materials. In the calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement part of the research, three calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement clinkers with a range of phase compositions were successfully synthesized from reagent-grade chemicals. The synthesized calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement that contained medium C4A3 S and C2S contents showed good dimensional stability, sulfate resistance, and compressive strength development and was considered the optimum phase composition for calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement in terms of comparable performance characteristics to portland cement. Furthermore, two calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement clinkers were successfully synthesized from natural and waste materials such as limestone, bauxite, flue gas desulfurization sludge, Class C fly ash, and fluidized bed ash proportioned to the optimum calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cement synthesized from reagent-grade chemicals. Waste materials composed 30% and 41% of the raw ingredients. The two calcium sulfoaluminate-belite cements synthesized from natural and waste materials showed good dimensional stability, sulfate resistance, and compressive strength development, comparable to commercial portland cement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain 270 papers outlining ideas and contributions to the new scientific, technical and political discipline of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Control. The contributions were presented at the 4th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-4). It was the largest gathering of experts active in this new and fast-developing field.GHGT-4 was different from its predecessors in that it included all greenhouse gases, not only CO2, and all issues which could contribute to the mitigation of the greenhouse problem - technical, economic and political. The main focus was on practical solutions and real demonstrations of mitigation technology being planned and implemented today. It also addressed ways to increase the efficiency of power production and utilisation, and looked at proposals to encourage the development of renewable energy sources.During the Opening Session, 10 keynote addresses were heard from prominent personalities in government, industry and academia. To tackle this very inter-disciplinary problem and to achieve acceptable solutions, it is essential for industry and government to initiate intense dialogue and cooperation. Conferences like this can provide the opportunity for a meeting of minds between engineers and politicians in the face of global challenge. The primary attributes of this global challenge are manifold: the problem is global and international; it is inter-disciplinary, both in substance and approach; it covers technical, political and economic issues and involves government, science, industry and academia; it is complex and non-linear; and it will take the efforts of all parties involved to solve the problem. These proceedings contain ideas for starting demonstration projects and for making better use of the power and flexibility of market measures. They also show it is a problem we can influence and that there is a wealth of ideas. The challenge now is to find the right partners to put these ideas into action.

The data base focuses on elements commonly found as major solutes in natural waters, and on actinides and fission products relevant for radioactive waste disposal projects. It is the official chemical thermodynamic data base used in Swiss radioactive waste disposal projects. The detailed discussion of every number recommended in this encyclopedia is the result of a multi man-year project of the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), a Swiss National Lab. The five authors of this work have many years of experience in research, data base development and the application of thermodynamic data in environmental studies. The data included for many elements are based on their reviews of the basic literature. The data base also includes additional data selected by the authors from recommendations of other experts in ground- water geochemistry and of the international data base project of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).This report is indispensable for every scientist working in the field of environmental studies as the comprehensive source of information on the quality of the thermodynamic data governing particular problems in environmental geochemistry, especially those concerned with the fate of hazardous substances. This enables graduate students, researchers and consultants, as well as regulators and reviewers of scientific papers to assess the scientific basis of environmental modeling studies. The encyclopedia can be used as a stand-alone source of knowledge but amplereferences are provided for readers who wish to go beyond the level of discussion in the book. An electronic version of the data base and a data base management program is available for download at our homepage (http://les.web.psi.ch/TDBbook.htm).

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This doctoral dissertation describes the synthesis and characterisation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phase and other cementitious materials. C-S-H is the most important mineral phase in ordinary Portland cement (OPC), accounting for strength and hardening. Its characterisation has been the subject of research in the past 70 years and yet there are still gaps in knowledge and understanding. In this work the development of a novel method process for direct synthesis of solid calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases is proposed, by mixing calcium hydroxide and silica. This method allows crystal structural determination of the synthetic mineral, and permits characterisation at the atomic scale and also mechanical-hydraulic measurements on monoliths, rather than the more traditional slurry format. The method is easy, relatively fast and highly reproducible. In particular, structure evolution of synthetic C-S-H is studied under varying calcium to silica ratio, curing time and silica particle size, using either silica fume or nano-silica (particle size). While this method advantageously produces solid C-S-H, its production at bulk-scale is also evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment and compared to other OPC-free binder materials. Novel OPC-free cementitious binders are in fact developed and characterised in terms of mechanical and thermal performance. Proposed as an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement, these innovative cementitious materials have a lower carbon footprint and contribute to reduce Portland cement consumption and its CO2 emissions. Hydrothermal synthesis of C-S-H is carried out to investigate the response to hot and wet conditions, typical of cement encapsulation in deep geological storage of radioactive waste. As a result of these investigations, synthesis conditions have been proven to be the key in "tailoring" and designing the C-S-H structure at the nano-scale. C-S-H produced is used as a crack-sealing agent in aqueous injection. A lab-scale investigation shows that aqueous nano-silica injected through a hardened cement matrix reacts with calcium hydroxide naturally present in hydrated Portland cement producing additional C-S-H and reducing the overall porosity and permeability. This study explores the potential use of solid C-S-H to repair large scale structures which are wet or under water, such as legacy ponds in nuclear waste storage facilities.
