Book excerpt: Methodologies for expanding the architectural diversity of CCC-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pincer ligand precursors and transition metal complexes have been developed for the production of more efficient catalyst, which will be employed in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. An efficient route for the synthesis and isolation of bis-1,3-(3'-aryl-N-heterocycl-1'-yl)arenes has been established, and preliminary data for metalation and transmetalation of a N, N'-diaryl imidazolium salt has been acquired. Additionally, a proficient methodology for the synthesis of mixed, unsymmetrical CCC-NHC pincer ligand precursors has been discovered, and preliminary data for mixed, unsymmetrical transition metal complexes is also included. These methodological expansions will lead to more efficient catalyst that decrease the expenditure of energy required for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, thus making their synthesis more favorable for the environment and their price more affordable for consumers.

Book excerpt: Asymmetric hydrogenation as a general route to polypropionates has been explored for allylic alcohols, acids, and derivatives, which has led to the generation of 2,4-dimethylated hexane derivatives. Quantitative yields in most cases and enantioselectivities greater than 98% were obtained. A remarkable stereofacial inversion was observed when an ester or acid was present in the allylic position instead of an alcohol or alcohol derivative. This led to the construction of all four diastereomers of the hexanol series from a single enantiomer of hydrogenation catalyst. Also described are an attempted synthesis of ( - )-lardolure, a formal synthesis of the methyl ester portion of the preen gland extract from the domestic goose Anser anser, and a total synthesis of an extract from the fungi A. cruciatus. The synthesis of these compounds demonstrated shortcomings of the known catalyst system showing enantioselectivities for polymethylated compounds was high, while diastereoselectivity was low. Methodology to develop new N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts was developed using the cyanide coupling of aldimines to generate electronically tunable 1,3,4,5-tetraaryl complexes, and X-ray, IR, and calculations were used to elucidate their electronic characteristics. These studies indicate that the 4,5-positions have as great an influence on the metal-ligand bond as the 1,3-positions. In addition, they are among the most electron-donating 2- metalated N-heterocyclic carbenes found thus far. An intrinsic relationship between catalytic activity and electron donating ability was found in transfer hydrogenations.

Book excerpt: The impact of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as ligands for transition metal catalysis has been rigorously investigated since their isolation by Arduengo in 1991. have become abundant in late-transition metal chemistry. This is attributed to NHCs being stronger sigma-donors than even the strongest phosphine analogues, thus constructing a transition metal-NHC complex with improved stability, catalytic reactivity, and selectivity. Additionally, pincer ligands have become recognized as an important class of ligands for transition metal complexes. The unique steric and tunability of pincer ligands has resulted in pincer-transition metal complexes being exploited as catalysts for a multitude of transformations. Both ligand classes, NHC and pincer, have been reported as stable organometallic catalysts that demonstrate high catalytic activity. The combination of these two ligand systems by incorporation of NHCs into pincer ligands has attracted considerable attention. NHC pincer systems have been reported as stable organometallic catalysts that demonstrate high catalytic activity. The expansion of CCC-NHC ligand precursor methodologies and application of the newly reported methodologies in order to diversify CCC-NHC ligand architectures is reported. Extension of the amine elimination methodology yielded unsymmetrical CCCNHC Ta pincer complexes. Studies on the manipulation of the previously reported symmetrical CCC-NHC pincer Ta complex’s coordination sphere to synthesize a rare Ta diimido complex with unique reactivity towards advantageous proton sources and oxidative amination of aminoalkenes are also expanded upon. These next generation catalysts developed from these architectures may prove useful in catalyzing a broad array of transformations not previously accessible through the four standard NHC containing pincer ligand architectures.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focusses on the discussion of how empirical ligand design works on the development of chiral pincer ligands in the field of asymmetric hydrogenation. Although the design art of bisphosphine ligands was well-established, this empirical guide for pincer ligand design is still ambiguous. Developing a ligand design guide based on the nature of metals enables synthetic chemists to improve the catalytic performance without investing large numbers of time, develop highly efficient catalysts for industrial uses, or explore new areas and mechanistic insights. Learning from the history of chiral pincer ligand development, over 14 categories of pincer ligands were reported according to the coordinating atoms by the time that this dissertation was prepared. Firstly, the ligand design and relevant catalytic performance of different ligand categories were summarized and discussed in prevalent noble metal catalysis such as Ru(II), Ir(III). Based on the nature of Fe(II) with respect to noble metals, a novel PNP-type ligand HengPNP (L) was designed and successfully synthesized. Empirical design perspectives were discussed, and the ligand was characterized by NMR, HRMS. Its corresponding Fe(II) complex was studied by X-ray crystallographic technique. However, the Fe(II) carbonyl complex was thermodynamically unstable under decent pressure. To better understand the catalytic performance and enantioselectivity of HengPNP(L), its corresponding Ir(III) complex was employed in the asymmetric hydrogenation of various ketone substrates. A C-H bond activation Ir(III) compound was successfully isolated. The Ir(III)/HengPNP was efficient on the asymmetric hydrogenation of orthosubstituted benzophenones with excellent ee and up to 500 TON. The catalyst was superior on the hydrogenation of bis-ortho-substituted benzophenones, excellent ee was achieved over the state-of-the-art Ir/f-amphox. DFT studies was conducted to shed light on the enantio-induction model of Ir/HengPNP. A novel enantio-induction mechanism was established-the change of rotation energy of ketone substrate under the steric pressure from rigid Ir/HengPNP, was responsible for the enantioselectivity. IrH/NH bifunctional mechanism was proposed for this protocol.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents work towards the development of a new catalytic C-C bond forming reaction. Alkynes and olefins insert into [(IPr)CuH]2 (IPr = N, N-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,3-imidazol-2-ylidene) to give copper vinyl and copper alkyl complexes. These copper complexes insert CO2 into the Cu-C bond to form copper acrylate and copper carboxylate complexes. Acrylic and carboxylic acids can be isolated by hydrolysis. A catalytic cycle based on (IPr)copper(I) was developed. Alkynes undergo reductive carboxylation to give acrylic acids in moderate yields. Unexpected interactions between several components of the catalytic system led to a number of side reaction, most importantly between [(IPr)CuH]2 and the product silyl acrylate. The use of silylcarbonate salts to desylilate the product enhanced yield. In addition, silylcarbonates can also serve as a source of CO2.

Book excerpt: The following body of work is a compilation of five years of research at San Diego State University as well as one year spent working as a fellow in the GK-12 program through the Socrates program at the University of California, San Diego. During that time I focused on creating iridium NHC complexes that featured nitrogen containing ring substituents that showed the possibility of acting as a pendant base. The two heterocyclic substituents on which I focused were derivatives of pyridine and pyrimidine groups attached to an NHC ligand. The ability of the nitrogen to coordinate to the metal center was controlled through the use of sterically bulky groups adjacent to the nitrogen atoms of the pyridine and pyrimidine rings. The resulting metal complexes were studied for their structure, dynamics, and catalytic activity using a variety of experimental systems, with the notable success of cyclizing primary and secondary amines onto alkenes in an intramolecular fashion. For the future work, the two projects that I developed for my assistants, Khoi Le and Ariana Perez, will be covered. For Khoi Le the research goal is to develop tridentate ligands based on my previous NHC research with bi-dentate ligands. These complexes will then be tested for their ability to reduce glycerin, a common by product of saponification, into more commercially interesting molecules. Ariana Perez was tasked with developing nitrogen containing ring systems as metal free catalysts for the refinement of triglycerides into methyl esters for the production of bio-diesel. Her work was based on literature reports of DMAP working as an efficient nucleophilic catalyst. Finally the work that I did as an NSF GK-12 fellow will be covered as well. During that time I was developing my skills in communication and implementing several new laboratory experiments aimed at improving high school students understanding of basic chemistry. Of particular note, I worked on two laboratory experiments that helped to develop the students understanding of electron orbitals and molecular shapes as dictated through bonding. This experience proved to be a great opportunity to not only refine my teaching abilities, but also to see chemistry from a different perspective.

The development of efficient chiral catalysts plays a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis. Although many chiral ligands/catalysts have been developed in the past decades, the most efficient catalysts are derived from a few core structures, called "privileged chiral catalysts". This ultimate "must have" and long awaited reference for every chemist working in the field of asymmetric catalysis starts with the core structure of the catalysts, explaining why a certain ligand or catalyst is so successful. It describes in detail the history, the basic structural characteristics, and the applications of these "privileged catalysts". This novel presentation provides readers with a much deeper insight into the topic and makes it a must-have for organic chemists, catalytic chemists, chemists working with/on organometallics, chemists in industry, and libraries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a certain fascination associated with words. The manipulation of strings of symbols according to mutually accepted rules allows a language to express history as well as to formulate challenges for the future. But language changes as old words are used in a new context and new words are created to describe changing situations. How many words has the computer revolution alone added to languages? "Inorganometallic" is a word you probably have never encountered before. It is one created from old words to express a new presence. A strange sounding word, it is also a term fraught with internal contradiction caused by the accepted meanings of its constituent parts. "In organic" is the name of a discipline of chemistry while "metallic" refers to a set of elements constituting a subsection of that discipline. Why then this Carrollian approach to entitling a set of serious academic papers? Organic, the acknowledged doyenne of chemistry, is distinguished from her brother, inorganic, by the prefix "in," i. e. , he gets everything not organic. Organometallic refers to compounds with carbon-metal bonds. It is simple! Inorganometallic is everything else, i. e. , compounds with noncarbon-metal element bonds. But why a new term? Is not inorganic sufficient? By virtue of training, limited time, resources, co-workers, and so on, chemists tend to work on a specific element class, on a particular compound type, or in a particular phase. Thus, one finds element-oriented chemists (e. g.

Impressive progress on enantioselective titanium-catalysed transformations has been achieved in the past seven years, with exciting new discoveries ranging from basic reactions to novel methodologies. Despite this, the field has not been substantially reviewed since 2008.This book contains up to date research and covers all types of enantioselective transformations using chiral titanium catalysts. It illustrates the economic, health, and environmental benefits of chiral titanium catalysts, showing the types of highly enantioselective reactions that they are able to induce are unlimited.Work presented here is aimed at researchers in organic and catalytic chemistry, and has been carefully curated to encourage future research possibilities.
