Book excerpt: Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for achieving 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. In support of these plans, an Upgrade Cryomodule, capable of providing more than twice the operating voltage of the existing CEBAF modules within the same length, is being developed. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavities capable of consistently operating at gradients above 12 MV/m and Q (approximately) 101°. We have engaged in a complete review of all the processes and procedures involved in the fabrication and assembly of cavities, and are modifying our chemical processing, cleaning, and assembly facilities. While we have retained the cell shape of existing CEBAF cavities, the new superconducting structure will be substantially different in several respects, such as the higher-order-modes damping and the fundamental power coupling systems. Design features and experimental results will be presented.

Book excerpt: Computer programs which solve Maxwell's equations in three dimensions are becoming an invaluable tool in the design of RF structures for particle accelerators. In particular, the lack of cylindrical symmetry of superconducting cavities with waveguide couplers demands a 3-D analysis for a reasonable description of a number of important phenomena. A set of codes, collectively known as MAFIA, developed by Weiland and his collaborators, has been used at CEBAF to study its five-cell superconducting accelerating cavities. The magnitude of RF crosstalk between cavities is found to depend critically on the breaking of cylindrical symmetry by the fundamental power couplers. A model of the higher order mode coupler exhibits an unexpected mode which is in good agreement with measurement.

Book excerpt: The superconducting parallel-bar cavity is a deflecting/crabbing cavity with attractive properties that is being considered for a number of applications. We present the designs of a 499 MHz deflecting cavity developed for the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV Upgrade and a 400 MHz crabbing cavity for the LHC High Luminosity Upgrade. Prototypes of these two cavities are now under development and fabrication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superconducting rf (SCRF) cavity Development Program at Los Alamos has designed, fabricated, and tested single-cell niobium cavities at 3-GHz and 805-MHz. This work is being done in preparation for procuring and testing a multicell niobium cavity. The multicell cavity is designed to accelerate protons at [beta] = 0.9; initial tests will be without beam. Progammmatic changes have required us to modify our plans to install a 6800-liter helium cryostat and a 12.8-g/s helium pump. We will use an installed cryostat to test the multicell cavity. Also, the cavity will be modified from a seven-cell to a four-cell structure to match the dimensions of the installed cryostat. Previous reports concentrated on 3-GHz results. In this paper, some of the latest results of the 805-MHz cavity tests are presented. Modifications to allow high pulsed power (HPP) testing on 805-MHz single- and four-cell cavities are proceeding. Glow discharge cleaning of an 805-MHz niobium cavity resulted in a decrease in cavity performance. The cavity was restored to previous performance levels with buffered chemical polishing (bcp). Initial results with high-pressure water cleaning show the process is useful in restoring cavity performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superconducting third harmonic 3.9 GHz accelerating cavity was proposed to improve the beam quality in the TTF-like photoinjector [1]. Fermilab has developed, built and tested several prototypes, including two copper 9-cell cavities, one niobium 3-cell cavity, and one 9-cell cavity. The helium vessel and frequency tuner for the 9-cell cavity was built and tested as well. In cold tests, we achieved a peak surface magnetic field of {approx}100mT, well above the 70mT specification. The accelerating gradient was likely limited by thermal breakdown. Studies of the higher order modes in the cavity revealed that the existing cavity design with two HOM couplers will provide sufficient damping of these modes. In this paper we discuss the cavity design, results of the studies and plans for further development.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research and development program is underway to construct superconducting cavities to be used for radiofrequency separation of a Kaon beam at Fermilab. The design calls for installation of twelve 13-cell cavities operating in the 3.9 GHz transverse mode with a deflection gradient of 5 MV/m. They present the mechanical, cryogenic and vacuum design of the cavity, cryomodule, rf power coupler, cold tuner and supporting hardware. The electromagnetic design of the cavity is presented in a companion paper by Wanzenberg and McAshan. The warm tuning system (for field flatness) and the vertical test system is presented along with test results of bench measurements and cold tests on single-cell and five-cell prototypes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The static and dynamic structural behavior of superconducting cavities for various projects was determined by finite element structural analysis. The [beta] = 0.61 cavity shape for the Neutron Science Project was studied in detail and found to meet all design requirements if fabricated from five millimeter thick material with a single annular stiffener. This 600 MHz cavity will have a Lorentz coefficient of -1.8 Hz/(Mv/meter)2 and a lowest structural resonance of more than 100 Hz. Cavities at [beta] = 0.48, 0.61, and 0.77 were analyzed for a Neutron Science Project concept which would incorporate 7-cell cavities. The medium and high beta cavities were found to meet all criteria but it was not possible to generate a [beta] = 0.48 cavity with a Lorentz coefficient of less than -3 Hz/(Mv/meter)2.

Book excerpt: The XFEL and TTF facilities are planning to use section with a few third harmonic cavities (3.9GHz) upstream of the bunch compressor to improve beam performance [1-2]. Fermilab is developing superconducting third harmonic section for the TTFII upgrade. This section will include four cavities equipped with couplers and blade tuners installed in cryostat. Up to now, two cavities are complete and one of them is under test. The status of the cavity development and preliminary test results are presented in this paper.

The quality factors (Q_0) were between 7Ã 10^9 and 1.4Ã 10^10 at the design field (accelerating gradient of 8â 10 MV/m). The maximum gradients reached were between 11 and 16 MV/m; in each case, the Q_0 values were?3Ã 10^9 at the maximum gradient. The design, fabrication, surface preparation, and rf testing of the 6-cell cavities are reported in this paper.
