Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the development of a mechanistic response model for the analysis of geogrid base reinforced flexible pavements and to investigate the response benefit of geogrid-reinforcement. This is an axisymmetric finite element structural model that considers the nonlinear, stress dependent pavement foundation geomaterials, i.e., unbound base aggregates and fine grained subgrade soils, anisotropic behavior of the granular base materials, as well as the compaction and preloading induced residual stresses in the granular base. The mechanistic model was used to investigate geogrid reinforcement mechanisms by considering locked-in horizontal residual stresses formed around the geogrid location for a proper modeling of the stiffening effect shown by the geogrid. These residual stresses are taken as initial conditions in pavement response analysis. To validate the response model, full-scale flexible pavement test sections, geogrid reinforced and unreinforced, were constructed at the University of Illinois Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL). Results from full-scale tests showed reduced critical pavement responses due to the inclusion of geogrid reinforcement. Higher percent reductions in lateral deflections in the aggregate base were realized especially in the direction of traffic. The anisotropic characterization of the granular base was needed to better capture the measured responses from the full-scale test sections. Field forensic and pavement trench studies were used to further calibrate the mechanistic response model. Typical increased horizontal residual stresses at the level of approximately 41 kPa was also needed 100 mm around the geogrid to better match measured pavement responses of the reinforced sections. As a result of the calibration efforts, the predicted responses at different locations in the test sections compared in general well with the field measured responses under different load levels.

Book excerpt: This research was undertaken to evaluate and determine structural benefits of three Pennsylvania Department of Transportation approved geogrids for reinforcing weak pavement subgrade. A mechanistic-empirical approach was adopted to develop subgrade permanent deformation models for geogrid-reinforced flexible pavements. Multi-scale tests were conducted for the three geogrids. Mechanical and index properties of the geogrids were tested before the geogrids were subjected to bench-scale testing, namely pullout and direct shear tests. Two sets of accelerated pavement tests (APTs) were carried out to investigate the effectiveness of geogrids in improving pavement performance. For each APT, four pavement sections were constructed in a pit with concrete walls, among which one was control and the others were reinforced with different geogrids. Two different types of soil were involved for the subgrade construction through the two sets of accelerated testing. Various instruments were installed in the pavement system to measure both static and dynamic response of the pavements.

Book excerpt: Gain a stronger foundation with optimal ground improvement Before you break ground on a new structure, you need to analyze the structure of the ground. Expert analysis and optimization of the geo-materials on your site can mean the difference between a lasting structure and a school in a sinkhole. Sometimes problematic geology is expected because of the location, but other times it's only unearthed once construction has begun. You need to be able to quickly adapt your project plan to include an improvement to unfavorable ground before the project can safely continue. Principles and Practice of Ground Improvement is the only comprehensive, up-to-date compendium of solutions to this critical aspect of civil engineering. Dr. Jie Han, registered Professional Engineer and preeminent voice in geotechnical engineering, is the ultimate guide to the methods and best practices of ground improvement. Han walks you through various ground improvement solutions and provides theoretical and practical advice for determining which technique fits each situation. Follow examples to find solutions to complex problems Complete homework problems to tackle issues that present themselves in the field Study design procedures for each technique to simplify field implementation Brush up on modern ground improvement technologies to keep abreast of all available options Principles and Practice of Ground Improvement can be used as a textbook, and includes Powerpoint slides for instructors. It's also a handy field reference for contractors and installers who actually implement plans. There are many ground improvement solutions out there, but there is no single right answer to every situation. Principles and Practice of Ground Improvement will give you the information you need to analyze the problem, then design and implement the best possible solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the last 17 years, approximately 12 different studies have shown the potential for the use of geosynthetic materials (geogrids and geotextiles) as a reinforcement inclusion in the base course aggregate layer of flexible pavements. The attraction of this application lies in the possibility of reducing the thickness of the base course layer such that a roadway of equal service life results or in extending the service life of the roadway. While several existing studies have provided data that aid in describing mechanisms of reinforcement, detailed information required to understand the mechanisms by which geosynthetics reinforce flexible pavements is lacking. In the absence of this information, it has historically been difficult to create mechanistic based models that adequately describe the process. As such, efforts to establish design solutions have been based largely on empirical data and considerations. Existing design solutions have not been met with open acceptance due to their inability to predict performance for conditions other than those established in the experiments for which the solution was based. This research was undertaken to provide experimental data that could be used to further establish the mechanisms of geosynthetic reinforcement that lead to enhanced pavement performance. Subsequent work will involve the use of these data in developing numerical models and design solutions for this application. Pavement test sections have been constructed in a laboratory based pavement test facility. The facility consists of a large concrete box in which field scale pavement layers can be constructed. Loading is provided through the application of a cyclic, 40 kN load applied to a stationary plate resting on the pavement surface. The test sections have been instrumented with an extensive series of stress and strain cells. Test section variables have included geosynthetic type (two biaxial geogrid products and one woven geotextile), subgrade type and strength, placement position of the geosynthetic in the base course layer and base course layer thickness. The results have shown that the inclusion of a geosynthetic provides a significant reinforcement effect. The geosynthetic is shown to have an influence on the amount of lateral spreading that occurs in both the bottom of the base course layer and in the top of the subgrade. Reinforcement is also seen to produce a more distributed vertical stress distribution on the top of the subgrade. As a result of these effects, reinforcement limits the vertical strain developed in the base and subgrade layers, leading to less surface deformation. Given that these mechanisms result from the development of shear interaction between the base and the geosynthetic, the combination of these effects is termed a mechanism of a shear resisting interface. These effects are seen to be most significant for a soft subgrade where substantial improvement in pavement performance has been observed. Geosynthetic type, strength, stiffness and placement position are also seen to influence observed improvement.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pavement design package created by Itasca extends the capabilities of PFC3D to support triaxial testing of a synthetic unsaturated aggregate base containing geogrid. The geogrid provides lateral restraint to the aggregate base as a result of interlocking and friction between the geogrid and the aggregate particles. The macroscopic system properties are affected by the microstructural system properties. Therefore, the modeled system was used to study and quantify the effect of microstructural properties on the macroscopic properties, which include the stress-strain curves produced during triaxial tests at different confinements. The microstructural properties of the aggregate base include: particle size, particle type (density, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio of each particle; and friction between particles), aggregate base moisture content (suction and gap), and initial aggregate base porosity. The microstructural properties of the geogrid include: geometry (aperture and rib dimensions), Young’s modulus, bond stiffness, and grid-grain interface behavior. The pavement design package provides a mechanistically defensible model for aggregate-geogrid interaction, which was used to improve pavement design by estimating geogrid gain factors for typical geogrid-reinforced aggregate roadways. It is anticipated that a simplified geogrid gain factor adjustment will be trialed during pavement design for projects where geogrid is being considered. As expected, this study concludes that geogrid provides benefit and that this benefit varies during the year. Therefore, it is recommended that the seasonal effects be included during implementation. This would allow the fatigue and rutting to be more accurately estimated over the expected pavement design life.
