Book excerpt: The quantification and description of sea surface temperature (SST) is critically important because it can influence the distribution, migration, and invasion of marine species; furthermore, SSTs are expected to be affected by climate change. Recent research indicates that there has been a warming trend in ocean temperatures over the last 50 years. Hence, we sought to identify and demonstrate how a particularly germane SST dataset can be used within the scope of global climate change research. For this project we assembled a 29-year nearshore time series of mean monthly SSTs along the North Pacific coastline, as well as mean monthly SSTs for ice-free regions of the Arctic, using remotely-sensed satellite data collected with the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument. By providing detailed information concerning both dataset generation and data limitations, we aimed to make these data comprehensible to an expanded audience concentrating on life sciences rather than the traditionally physical science-based community. Furthermore, by making these data freely and publically available in multiple formats, including GIS (geographic information systems) layers, we expand their visibility and the extent of their use. We then used the dataset to describe SST patterns of nearshore (

Book excerpt: An autocorrelation analysis of six temperature records from the North Pacific and North Atlantic up to 40 years in length showed the existence of an oscillatory function with period 1 year for all the stations studied, and of another oscillatory function with period 0.5 year for most of the stations. A regression model containing annual and semiannual oscillatory terms was found to provide a good statistical fit to the observed daily temperatures. No long-term trends were detected in the sequences of annual mean temperatures, but there were significant differences among these temperatures. (Author).

Book Synopsis A Comparison of Satellite-observed Sea-surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean by : Ants Leetmaa
Download or read book A Comparison of Satellite-observed Sea-surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean written by Ants Leetmaa and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daily worldwide sea-surface temperature maps are produced by the National Environmental Satellite Service. For the first half of 1975, sea-surface temperatures recorded on these maps were compared with concurrent ship observations in the Indian Ocean. Additional comparisons were made with historical data. These show systematic differences between the satellite and sea-surface observations. The satellite-derived temperatures appear to be too low along the equator and along the East African coast in the vicinity of the equator. Furthermore, in April, May, and June the areas off the equator (and not along the coast) appear to have temperatures that are too high. Although the mean differences are not large (1°-2°C), the fact that the errors vary in time and space made it difficult to apply the satellite data for oceanographic interpretations.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-dependent horizontal-temperature gradients were computed from vertical-temperature cross sections taken with the towed thermistor chain in 17 areas of the eastern North Pacific. The horizontal gradients were found to be generally smaller than the vertical gradients by two orders of magnitude. The horizontal-gradient field alternated regularly in sign, implying a dominant frequency of internal waves or convection cells (with a corresponding wavelength of 0.72 nautical mile). The horizontal gradient in the thermocline can be predicted from the measured vertical gradient by means of the equation: dT/dx = 0.0047(dT/dz) to the 0.71 power. On the basis of these results, plus a single bathythermograph lowering, a simplified predictive model of the horizontal-temperature gradients was constructed. (Author).
