This book was released on 2007 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to support the final development of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX). The RIGEX program is an experimental initial step in developing large-scale rigidizable inflatable structures, which can be utilized in space applications. The primary intent of RIGEX is to verify and validate ground testing of inflation and rigidization methods for inflatable space structures against a zero-gravity space environment. This is performed by designing a Canister for All Payload Ejections (CAPE) experiment to collect data on space rigidized structures for validation of ground testing methods. The results presented in this thesis provide documentation needed to meet the requirements set forth by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for launching a payload into space. This thesis establishes a process for appropriately ground testing the components of RIGEX in an environment similar to space and explains future testing required. Methods for charging and testing the performance of the onboard inflation system are also discussed. Additionally, the steps taken to replace the onboard imaging system are explained. Throughout the course of assembling the RIGEX protoflight model, several complications were encountered and the design was modified, which are presented along with an as-built final assembly drawing package. Lastly, the procedure for handling RIGEX during its future progression is illustrated.

Download or read book Development, Fabrication and Ground Test of an Inflatable Structure Space-Flight Experiment written by Thomas Lee Philley and published by . This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflatable, rigidizable structures provide a solution to reduce the costs associated with design, fabrication and launch of a space system while simultaneously increasing the deployment reliability and mission success of the system%. This research focused on the follow on design, fabrication, and ground test of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX). RIGEX is a self-contained experiment that will test the deployment and structural characteristics of three inflatable rigidizable tubes. Once inflated and rigidized, each tube will be excited using piezoelectric transducers in order to collect vibration data for structural characterization. The goal of this research was to collect ground testing data that will later be used in conjunction with actual space flight results in an effort to validate ground testing methodologies.

Book Synopsis Structural Analysis of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment by :
Download or read book Structural Analysis of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to validate the structural integrity of the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX) and make appropriate improvements to the design, motivated by static and dynamic analysis results. RIGEX is designed to advance the use of rigidizable inflatable structures in the space environment by providing three sets of on-orbit test data on the structural characteristics of three thermoplastic composite tubes. This thesis discusses the RIGEX structural analysis. The term structural analysis refers to the development of a detailed finite element model and the tests for which the model was used. The finite element model provided an acceptable estimation of RIGEX's natural frequencies, the structural integrity of the fastener system, the maximum stress seen by the aluminum primary structure, and the maximum possible displacements at various locations around the RIGEX structure for various load conditions. These three analyses motivated numerous design changes, which are discussed in detail in this thesis. The analysis process was repeated following each design change until all structural integrity and design criteria were met. In addition to the structural analysis and associated design changes, this thesis presents the as built RIGEX drawing package and wiring schematic. The results presented in this thesis are the first step towards passing the structural integrity requirements set forth by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for manned spaceflight. Recommendations of appropriate construction and testing techniques to ensure the actual structure matches the computer model are discussed.
