Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine Order of Development, as Traced in Nature, Man, and the Bible, by the Methods of Christ and of the Spirit The book conveys its own message to thoughtful men; it is not necessary here to enter into detailed explanations about the subject matter. The theme is Development; there is an introduction to the study; a glance at development in history, Nature, Man and the Bible. The thought that underlies all forms of development is Life, thus It is stated that God is Life that Christ has Life in all its diversities in Himself; that the Spirit of Truth reveals the Life in Christ and this Life is the Life Eternal and Immortal. God is conceived as Grace, revealed to men, as Divine Love, in a body of Sacrifice, that is in Divine Travail. Christ is referred to as the Divine Inheritance of the Saints. The Spirit of Christ is the Perfect Divine or the Spirit of Truth; the harmony and unity of the works of the Spirit are revealed to men in the Divine Purpose of Grace, as revealed in the Bible. God is Eternal Life; the Lord of Life expresses the Divine unity in these words: That they all may be one as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I m Thee, that they also may be one in us that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. I in them, and Thou in Me, lthat they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me. In these, the deepest mystical thoughts of Christ, what men find is the want of unity in mankind the serious separation of men from God the union in the Spirit of Father and Son; this union in Grace conveyed to mankind in Christ so that there may be brought about in the universe perfect peace in love. In the light of these thoughts, the family of Adam, and the parable of the prodigal son, may be studied, as teaching the same truths. Adam as the fallen race Cain the first-born Son Abel the Shepherd and Martyr; and Seth the one who takes the place of Abel. In the parable, the story is about a family where there is a prodigal son, selfish, self - asserting and disobedient, who claims his portion and comes to want there is an elder brother who stays at home and yet lives far from his father in Spirit there is One who prepares the way for repentance, pardon and peace, unnoticed; and, there is the Spirit of the Father looking and longing for the returning prodigal; going forth to meet him With glad welcome and manifold blessings. In the Bible, from beginning to end, the same forms of truth are being repeated under new conditions. 15 it not so that the great curse of this age is to be found in that prodigal Spirit of humanity that has departed from the Father and from Home? What men require is to come to themselves, to become sane in mind, to repent and to make confession of sin. This has ever been the mystic vision through all the ages it is that God is Love, and that He loves, and is waiting to be gracious, to bestow His blessings upon those who return to Him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Purpose: Displayed in the Works of Providence and Grace; In a Series of Twenty Letters, Addressed to an Inquiring Friend Dear Sir, - Your letter has been received, in which you request my opinion on various religious topics, for the purpose of aiding you in forming a correct decision respecting that denomination of Christians, with which it would he most expedient to connect yourself, I will endeavor to appreciate, but not abuse the opinion you are pleased to express respecting my candor and my ability for the performance of such a task. I feel encouraged in this undertaking by the serious intention you express of connecting yourself If with that denomination, which, after due deliberation and prayer, shall appear to you, most conformable to the sacred scripture, in its doctrines and form of government. When a person is already determined, it is absurd to ask, and vain to offer advice. It is my duty and my pleasure to explain publicly, and from house to house, that system of doctrines, held by the church to which I belong. If it pleases God to render these instructions effectual in awakening the careless, in directing the serious inquirer, or in confirming the believer, to his name be. the praise. But I sincerely pray, that God, in his mercy, may preserve me from that party spirit which would lead me to view it as a primary object to make proselytes. Indeed the man who cherishes party spirit is worthy of compassion, it suffering can render him such: for he must feel no ordinary degree of torture, on whose vitals such a vulture is continually preying. When this spirit takes full possession of the heart, like the jaundiced eye, it will pervert, distort, or misrepresent every object presented to the mind. The importance of every measure will be calculated according to its tendency to answer this paramount purpose of adding names to the catalogue of his party. Every feeling of the soul must bow to this sectarian spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Life: Divine Providence in the Light of Modern Science the Law of Development Applied to Christian, Thinking and Christian Living "The beginning and the end of what is the matter with us in these days," says Carlyle, "is that we have forgotten God." In what sense can this be true? The air has never been so full of theology - God-talk - as it is now. What we have forgotten, or are in danger of forgetting, is not the truth that there is a God, but the nature of his relation to us. The vast increase of scientific knowledge at the present day has, for the moment, a confusing tendency. "All things are governed by law, we are told; and the inference seems inevitable - "then they cannot be governed by God," and our faith in Divine Providence is rudely shaken. A deeper study of the subject not only restores our faith, but shows that science has given a new foundation for it. In proving the universality of law, science confirms the doctrine of the omnipresence of God. "Atheism is very bad metaphysics," says Professor John Fiske. But the truth has not yet come home to the heart of Christendom with all its comforting conviction that the God revealed by science is just the perfect Heavenly Father that the Bible declares him to be. Story of the Development of the Mind; 'it is inheriting a valuable inheritance, and what the man is called to do is to enter in, possess, and utilise all the treasures with which he has been endowed. What Science teaches definitely 'is that what is possessed can be resolved into divine order; and it must be granted that the attainment of such knowledge is what man ought to seek after; in fact, ignorance is as darkness and barbarism f and the knowledge of Truth is light, joy, peace and civilisation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soul and Body: A Book of Sermons Preached in the Church of the Divine Paternity, New York City One of the most interesting facts of biology, recently discovered, is that the higher forms of animal life pass through all the stages of the lower forms of animal life. That is, the biologist examines under his microscope the contents of the egg of a bird and the contents of the egg of a fish. Up to a certain stage of development there is no perceptible difference. The bird must pass through the fish stage in order to become a bird. In exactly the same way every man passes through all the stages of development from the lowest form of ani mal life and is born into this world an animal - more highly developed than other animals, but nevertheless an animal. The subject was selected, partly because it has largely occupied my thoughts for some years past and partly because the drift of current theological speculation renders it necessary that every intelligent Christian should have definite views on a question of such great, practical interest. Steering clear of the Romanist theory, on the one hand, and the theory Of Skeptical Rationalism, on the other, I have endeavoured to present and defend a conception of the Development of Doctrine, which recognizes both the Divine authority of the Holy Scriptures, and the right Of the Church to test the doctrines received from the past, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forms of Religion: As Seen in the Light of the Methods of Christ and of the Spirit, by Following the Divine Order of the Development The suggestions made in this order indicate the lines upon which the great problem of humanity is being solved. It is Man, as related to Nature, and to God, the Creator. It is fallen man, and mankind, seeking a way of Salvation from sin. It is the Revelation of the Man, the Saviour, the Son of God. It is Man saved and restored to the Divine likeness in the Lord Jesus Christ by His Holy Spirit. The line of study is that of development; Science is testifying that Man is the consummation of all natural laws up to the moral world; and, that if man would live in harmony with moral, and all other laws, his life would be a harmonious unity. It is the Fall, Sin, dis obedience to law, that brings in dualism, disorder, disease and death this is the root of schism, strife, war, and want of harmony. The forms of Religion studied, from Animism to the Religion of Rome, as moral law, or ethics, tend to show that, by this natural way of development, salvation from sin is not possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, Its Structure and Purpose, Vol. 4 To what all this is to lead is shown in some recent critical publications. Among these-is The Messages of the Bible, by Dr. Charles Foster Kent, Professor in Yale University, u.s. America. The title of this series Of volumes - The Messages of the Bible - is couched in the most reverent form, and there is no believer in the Divine origin of the Scriptures whom it does not satisfy. It acknowledges fully that the Bible, as befits a Book from God, has its messages for this as for every other age. But when we pass from the cover to the contents, there are no messages; and there is no Bible. There are no longer any Biblical Books in the critics' te-constructed Bible. The second title Of the volume, which more im mediately concerns us, is Significant. It is as follows: the messages OF israel's law givers. The laws OF the old testament codified, arranged IN order OF growth, and freely rendered IN paraphrase. Charles Scrib ner's Sons, 1902.
