Book excerpt: A study was conducted on the feasibility and extent of application of the ion exchange process as a method for silver recovery from spent photographic fixer solutions. The study demonstrates the technical feasibility of using ion exchange systems to recover silver from photographic fixer solutions for silver concentrations between 0.05 and 0.5 gm/l. However, ion exchange system operation at or above silver concentrations of 0.5 gm/l appears to negate any cost advantages over the electrolytic recovery systems. In addition, operation at concentrations under 0.05 gm/l requires about 10 times the resin needed at concentrations of 1.0 mg/l. A previously postulated resin-fouling mechanism was supported by experimental exchange data from a series of synthetic spent fixer solutions. Fouling during silver stripping may be caused by the formation of colloidal sulfur and silver sulfide particles with electrostatic charges neutralized by anionic exchange sites of the resin. A re-examination proved that an aqueous sodium acetate prewash of an anionic exchange column is a satisfactory method of preventing resin fouling by inorganic colloids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ion-exchange silver recovery pilot plant was designed, constructed, and operated to determine the feasibility of using ion-exchange resins to recover silver from spent photographic fixer solutions. Results indicate that ion-exchange silver recovery is technically feasible since the silver concentration in the fix tank can be maintained below 0.05 gm Ag(+)/l with complete recycle of the fixer solution, the ion-exchange resin can be regenerated, and the silver can be recovered from the regenerant solution by electrolysis. Cost evaluation of the ion-exchange silver recovery system indicates that this method is not the most economical for recovering silver from fixer solutions; electrolytic recycling appears to be more economical.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was development of a silver recovery process based upon Donnan dialysis, a continuous ion exchange system in which separation of ionic species is achieved by transport across an ion exchange membrane. The role of intrinsic membrane parameters on the transport of ions in Donnan dialysis appears more complex than originally postulated. The available data indicate that there are optimal values for ion exchange capacity and membrane hydrophilicity. If ion exchange capcity or hydrophilicity are too low, no ion transport occurs. Increasing ion exchange capacity appears to increase the ion transport rates, but the attendant increase in membrane hydrophilicity leads to a loss of ion permselectivity. It thus appears that a balance in ion exchange capacity and hydrophilicity must be achieved to provide an acceptable membrane. While these conclusions should be considered tentative, it appears that this is the best explanation of the results obtained in this study based upon the available data. It is recommended that further membrane study be conducted prior to any work toward developing a prototype Donnan dialysis system for silver recovery.

Book excerpt: Silver holds three world records; it has the lowest contact resistance, highest electrical conductivity and the best thermal conductivity of all metals. The element's physical strength, brilliance and malleability leads to its many uses from electronics to optical applications.A new 'silver rush' has occurred following the recent discovery that silver, when divided to form particles at the nano scale, can take on new properties. Meanwhile, there has been an increase in regulations against environmental pollution of silver ions toxicity, which have caused numerous diseases and disorders in the marine, microbial, invertebrate and vertebrate community (including humans). Both of which have led to a great interest in silver recovery for both environmental toxicity and an economic point of view.Comprised of ten chapters, this book draws attention to the most advance technologies in silver recovery and recycling from various spent sources, which will appeal to research scientists and metallurgists. The state of the art in recovery of silver from different sources by hydrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processing and varieties of leaching, cementing, reducing agents, adsorbents, and bio-sorbents are highlighted in this book.

Book excerpt: The main impression of this book is to draw attention to the most advance technologies in silver recovery and recycling from various sources. The state-of-the-art in silver recovery from different sources by hydrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processing, and varieties of leaching, cementing, reducing agents, peeling, electro-coagulants, adsorbents, electro-dialysis, solvent extraction, ion exchange resins and bio-sorbents are highlighted in this book. It is shown that the major economic driver for the recycling of depleted sources is for the recovery of silver. In order to develop a nature-friendly technique for the recovery of silver from diverse sources, a critical comparison of existing technologies is analyzed for both economic viability and environmental impact were made in this amendment, and silver ion toxicity is highlighted in this book. This book comprises four chapters, each of which is further divided into sections and subsections for the proper convenience and understanding of the work, though extensive work has been reported on silver hydrometallurgy.

Book excerpt: Precious Metals 1982 presents the variety of technical innovations in the application of precious metals. This book discusses the advances in recovery and refining and analysis of precious metals. Organized into 10 parts encompassing 47 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the fundamental experiments to elicit the mode of solidification for a small casting using the investment casting method. This text then describes the various medical uses of silver and its salts with the antibacterial properties of silver ions used in burn therapy, water purification, and to prevent infections. Other chapters consider the practical feasibility of a process involving the reaction of oxygen with gold particles in a potassium cyanide solution to produce potassium gold cyanide. This book discusses as well the major catalytic applications of the precious metals. The final chapter deals with fraud involving gold. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, metallurgists, geologists, jewelers, and goldsmiths.

Book excerpt: This book documents the proceedings of the symposium "Fundamentals and Applications of Anion Separations" held during American Chemical Society National Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, August 25-30, 200I. Nearly 40 papers devoted to discussions on anion separation related to fundamental research and applications were presented. The symposium, sponsored by Osram Sylvania, BetzDearbom, and the Separation Science & Technology Subdivision of the Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society was organized by Bruce A. Moyer, Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, P.O. Box 2008, Building. 4500S, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6119, and Raj P. Singh, Chemicals and Powders R&D, Osram Sylvania, Chemical and Metallurgical Products Division, Towanda, PA 18848. It drew presenters from Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Separations constitute an integral part of chemical industry. Chemical products typically originate in resources that must be concentrated and purified, chemically transformed, and subjected to fmal purification. Effluent streams from the processes must be treated to recycle reusable components and to remove environmentally harmful species. Some industrial processes are devoted to environmental cleanup after pollution has occurred. In addition, many analytical methods require a separation for preconcentration, or a separation may be an inherent part of the analysis itself. Micro separations occurring at membranes or interfaces are also related phenomena employed for ion sensing. Many species targeted for separation are naturally anionic. Although the standard separations techniques ofextraction, ion exchange, adsorption, precipitation, etc.
