Book excerpt: The NOvA long-baseline neutrino experiment uses a fine-grained, low-Z, fully active detector that offers unprecedented electron neutrino identification capabilities for a detector of its scale. In this award's proposal, the PI outlined the development and implementation of novel techniques for channel readout, detector calibration, and event reconstruction that make full use of the strengths of the NOvA detector technology. In particular, this included designing custom event reconstruction algorithms that utilize the rich information available in the substructure of hadronic and electromagnetic showers. Exploiting this information provides not only substantial improvement in background rejection for the electron neutrino search but also better shower energy resolution (improving the precision on measured oscillation parameters) and a high-energy electromagnetic calibration source (through neutral pion events). The PI further proposed developing and deploying a new electronics readout scheme compatible with the existing hardware that can reduce near detector event pile-up and can offer powerful timing information to the reconstruction, allowing for cosmic ray muon tagging via track direction determination, among other things. In conjunction with the above, the PI proposed leading the calibration of the NOvA detectors, including characterizing individual electronics channels, correcting for spatial variations across the detector, and establishing absolute event energy scales. All three of these lines of effort have been successfully completed, feeding directly into the NOvA's recent exciting neutrino oscillation results. The techniques developed under this award are detailed in this final technical report.

Book excerpt: The NOvA (NuMI Off-axis ve [nu_e] Appearance) Experiment is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment currently in its second year of operations. NOvA uses the Neutrinos from the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab, and there are two main off-axis detectors: a Near Detector at Fermilab and a Far Detector 810 km away at Ash River, MN. The work reported herein is in support of the NOvA Experiment, through contributions to the development of data acquisition software, providing an accurate, absolute-scale energy calibration for electromagnetic showers in NOvA detector elements, crucial to the primary electron neutrino search, and through an initial evaluation of the cosmic background rate in the NOvA Far Detector, which is situated on the surface without significant overburden. Additional support work for the NOvA Experiment is also detailed, including DAQ Server Administration duties and a study of NOvA's sensitivity to neutrino oscillations into a "sterile" state.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author’s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, θ13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's work in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, in which neutrinos are generated by a proton beam and are detected by near and far neutrino detectors. In order to achieve the precise measurement of the neutrino oscillation, an accurate understanding of the neutrino beam and the neutrino interaction is essential. Thus, the author measured the neutrino beam properties and the neutrino interaction cross sections using a near neutrino detector called INGRID and promoted a better understanding of them. Then, the author performed a neutrino oscillation analysis using the neutrino beam and neutrino interaction models verified by the INGRID measurements. As a result, some values of the neutrino CP phase are disfavored at the 90% confidence level. If the measurement precision is further improved, we may be able to discover the finite CP phase which involves the CP violation. Thus, this result is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector, which may be the key to understanding the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the universe.

Book excerpt: "Neutrinos are tiny, subatomic particles which currently present some outstanding questions in the field of particle physics. Though neutrino oscillations are now an understood phenomenon, efforts are still underway to measure the neutrino oscillation parameters even more precisely. Furthermore, the ordering of the three neutrino mass states relative to one another - the neutrino mass ordering - is still unknown. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector is currently being built in the Mediterranean Sea to address such questions. This infrastructure surrounds huge volumes of seawater with photodetectors, bypassing the tiny interaction cross section of these particles, and detecting the Cherenkov radiation of products of neutrino interactions in the water. In this thesis, the software used to simulate atmospheric muons in the detector using parametric formulae is tuned to KM3NeT/ORCA data, resulting in an improved simulation of the atmospheric muons, which form the main background for neutrino analyses. A novel neutrino event reconstruction algorithm is developed and explored in this thesis, aiming to reconstruct neutrino events with both a track-like and particle shower-like component. The estimate of the reconstructed neutrino energy is improved upon with this technique, as well as directly reconstructing the fractional energy transfer to the hadronic shower component of the interaction. This reconstruction technique also shows the potential for identifying different neutrino interaction channels. The improved energy estimate and the potential to identify the interaction channel pave the way for future analyses, leading to an improved measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters and determination of the yet-unknown neutrino mass ordering."--

Over the last few years there has been intense work to streamline the computing infrastructure in preparation for data, which started to flow in from the far detector in Fall 2013. Major accomplishments for this effort include migration to the use of off-site resources through the use of the Open Science Grid and upgrading the file-handling framework from simple disk storage to a tiered system using a comprehensive data management and delivery system to find and access files on either disk or tape storage. NOvA has already produced more than 6.5 million files and more than 1 PB of raw data and Monte Carlo simulation files which are managed under this model. In addition, the current system has demonstrated sustained rates of up to 1 TB/hour of file transfer by the data handling system. NOvA pioneered the use of new tools and this paved the way for their use by other Intensity Frontier experiments at Fermilab. Most importantly, the new framework places the experiment's infrastructure on a firm foundation, and is ready to produce the files needed for first physics.

Book excerpt: We consider a Super-NOVA-like experimental configuration based on the use of two detectors in a long-baseline experiment as NOVA. We take the far detector as in the present NOVA proposal and add a second detector at a shorter baseline. The location of the second off-axis detector is chosen such that the ratio L/E is the same for both detectors, being L the baseline and E the neutrino energy. We consider liquid argon and water- Cerenkov techniques for the second off-axis detector and study, for different experimental setups, the detector mass required for the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy, for different values of [theta]13. We also study the capabilities of such an experimental setup for determining CP-violation in the neutrino sector. Our results show that by adding a second off-axis detector a remarkable enhancement on the capabilities of the current NOVA experiment could be achieved.

Book excerpt: The NONA neutrino experiment based in Fermilab is designed to measure ! e neutrino oscillations. This experiment will give us insight into the properties of massive neutrinos. Neutral current (NC) ;e neutral pion production events can mimic the ! e oscillation signal and therefore are an important background for NONA to understand. Neutral pions decay into two photons which can fake a single electron shower ( e appearance signal) in two ways: either the 2 photons can merge together or one of them may escape detection. In order to constrain this background, NONA utilizes the Near Detector to measure neutral current 0 neutrino interactions. In this analysis, neutrino-Nucleus ( !N) NC 0 interactions with total pion energy greater then 0.3 GeV are studied by selecting two prong events with two final state photons as determined by prong based Convolutional Visual Networks (CVN). The analysis is performed on 3.54x1021 Protons On Target (POT) of NONA Near Detector simulated data and compared to 8.09x1020 POT of data. Optimization of the selection based on fractional cross-section uncertainty and an initial energy resolution study of the final sample are presented. The final 2 prong selection using prong based CVN gave a purity of 74%, selection efficiency of 1.8%, and an expected (NC) ;e neutral pion cross section of 15.2%.

Book excerpt: This thesis measures the muon neutrino oscillation at T2K using the first data of the experiment. It concentrates on developing an original selection at Super-Kamionde, the T2K far detector, that improves the performance of the current standard selection. Anew, more precise measurement of the oscillation parameters sin22823 and ~m~2 is performed using this new selection. T2K is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in Japan which began data taking in January 2010. It uses the world's most powerful ac- celerator generated beam of muon neutrinos intersected by two detectors. The near detector is located 280 m from the beam source while Super-Kamiokande lies 295 km away. Super-Kamiokande is a 50 kt water Cherenkov detector which measures the neutrino beam after oscillation. The determination of the oscillation pa- rameters comes from looking at the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the beam. For this purpose event selection at Super-Kamiokande is optimised for neutrino flavour identification and energy reconstruction, specifically, select- ing muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic events, primarily with single muon-like Cherenkov rings produced by the outgoing muon. This thesis eval- " uates two new methods of enhancing the selection to obtain a higher sensi- tivity from the data, firstly by exploring a multi-variate analysis approach to charged-current quasi-elastic selection, and secondly through the exploration of an additional charged-current single charged pion channel. Out of these only the multivariate based selection produced an improvement in the sensitivity to oscillation with respect to the standard selection. A first analysis of the data collected until March 11th 2011 using the above described improvement is presented in this thesis. A value of 2.68~~:ig x 10-3 eV2 was recorded for ~m~2 and 0.999~~:~~~ for sin22823.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MINOS experiment is a neutrino oscillation baseline experiment intending to use high resolution L/E neutrinos to measure the atmospheric neutrino oscillations parameters to unprecedented precision. Two detectors have been built to realize the measurements, a Near detector, located about 1km downstream from the beam target at the Fermi Laboratory, and a Far detector, located at 736km, at the Soudan Laboratory. The technique relies on the Near detector to measure the un-oscillated neutrino spectrum, while the Far detector measures the neutrino spectrum once oscillated. The comparison between the two measurements is expected to allow MINOS to measure {Delta}m{sup 2} beyond 10% precision level. The Near and Far detectors have been built similarly to minimize possible systematic effects. Both detectors have been endowed with different readout systems, as the beam event rates are very different. The MINOS calibration detector (CalDet), installed at CERN, was instrumented with both readout systems such that they can simultaneously measure and characterize the energy deposition (response and event topology) of incident known particle from test-beams. This thesis presents the investigations to quantify the impact of the performance of both readout systems on the MINOS results using the measurements obtained with CalDet. The relative comparison of the responses of both readout systems have been measured to be consistent with being identical within a systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. The event topologies have been found to be negligibly affected. In addition, the performance of the detector simulations have been thoroughly investigated and validated to be in agreement with data within similar level of uncertainties.
