Book excerpt: Learner autonomy, defined as the learners' capacity to self-regulate and be responsible for their own learning, has been recognised as a significant asset in students' second language learning success. Abundant research has examined student and teacher perceptions about learner autonomy and strategies for its development in various well-resourced environments. Such research is absent in less-resourced and underprivileged contexts where the promotion of learner autonomy is a greater necessity. Despite the Indonesian government's strong emphasis on learner autonomy promotion in the national curriculum, preliminary research in well-resourced Indonesian contexts suggests practical and reported challenges in its development. This phenomenon motivated this research to examine EFL teachers' and learners' beliefs and teachers' practices for developing autonomy in underprivileged senior high school contexts in rural Indonesia. A qualitative phenomenological research design was adopted in this study combining 32 semi-structured interviews with teachers, six focus groups with 30 students and 12 classroom observations to provide an in-depth understanding of this unique context and to address the gap arising from the mainly quantitatively researched field. The findings highlighted some mismatches between teachers' and students' conceptions of learner autonomy. The teachers held a partial understanding of the concept of learner autonomy, mainly embracing its reactive sense, emphasising students' responses to learning agendas initiated by the teacher. In contrast, most students held a broader understanding of learner autonomy, emphasising mainly its proactive sense. In addition, while the teachers viewed the prospect of developing learner autonomy negatively, the students were more optimistic about its development in their context. Both groups identified a set of challenges in developing learner autonomy, revealing the dominance of socio-economic factors. Analysis of teachers' reported and actual practices of learner autonomy demonstrated that teachers' pedagogical autonomy strategies were predominantly associated with the psychological dimension of autonomy. These included motivational and affective strategies to enhance student engagement, and create a positive learning environment. Their practices highlight limited adoption of explicit strategy training focusing on technical and socio-political dimensions of autonomy aimed at empowering students to be in control over their own learning decisions. This study raises awareness of the implementation and challenges of learner autonomy development in underprivileged contexts and offers pedagogical recommendations to address these challenges suitable to Indonesian and other under-resourced educational environments.

Abstract: Developing Learner Autonomy Through Self-Access Tsang Wai Yi Fiona Abstract Learner autonomy is considered essential in relation to life-long learning and whole-person development as has been stated in the proposed curriculum changes by Curriculum Development Council in Hong Kong since 2000. In view of the increasing importance of autonomy and the proliferation of self-access centres in the local tertiary and secondary contexts, this study sets out to examine the development of autonomy with a low-resourced self-access centre in a Hong Kong secondary school. A listening project was done in a self-access mode. In an attempt to extend previous efforts on self-access, data is aggregated on changes of learners' study habits and confidence in managing their own learning as well as actual language gain. The findings show that a low-resourced centre can enhance learner autonomy which enables learners to exploit the environment for their own learning sake. With teacher's help, learners can conduct their own learning which can help them to make language gain. They had ability in choosing suitable materials, assessing and evaluating their performance and monitoring their progress. While learners with poor, average and good proficiency in English all benefit, the average ones seem to be the greatest beneficiaries. Most of them are much more motivated and have more language gain than the other two groups as a result of the self-access mode of learning. Abstract: Abstract of the Dissertation Secondary Four Remedial Students' Attitudes towards the Fostering of Learner Autonomy through a Task-based Group Project submitted by Cheung See Wan This dissertation is a qualitative study exploring twenty-four S.4 remedial students' interpretations of autonomous learning and task-based learning and their purposes and attitudes towards doing a task-based project to develop learner autonomy. Based on early studies, it is believed that students will develop positive attitudes towards autonomous learning through project work. The study focused on a group project aiming to welcome twenty-five Singaporean students in an exchange programme in May 2005. As a joint school function, the project involved twelve subjects from a local English (EMI) secondary school and the other twelve from a neighbouring Chinese-medium (CMI) one. The data were drawn from three instruments-- naturalistic observations, video recordings with follow-up interviews and student journals throughout the project. The findings suggested that most students had undergone positive changes in perceptions towards both task-based and autonomous learning after experiencing their merits in the ten-lesson module. Their purposes in doing the project also gradually became more achievement oriented. They generally believed that the project was effective in developing learner autonomy. Despite the limitations of time, tedious preparation processes and subjects' initial objection to video recordings, the project was successfully implemented.
