Book excerpt: This paper examines the Islamic Republic of Mauritania’s adoption of its third Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) action plan, covering the medium term (2011–2015). Poverty reduction as the ultimate objective of all of the country’s economic social and institutional development policies has informed the context in which the third action plan is being implemented. The safe drinking water supply rate reached 52 percent nationally. In urban areas, the rate of access to private water main connections was 35 percent although it varied significantly from town to town. During the first year of implementation of the PRSP III, significant progress was made with actions targeting good governance and capacity-building in all areas of governance.

Download or read book Rapport Du Canada À la Commission Du Développement Durable Des Nations Unies written by Canada and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) brought together almost every country in the world in an effort to have the global community commit itself to the goal of sustainable development. Among its major achievements was Agenda 21, an ambitious plan of action on 39 environment and development issues. The United Nations subsequently created the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) to monitor progress towards achievement of UNCED's goals. This report of Canada to the CSD summarizes the progress, lessons learned, and challenges in achieving the goals of sustainable development. It concentrates on the chapters and themes in Agenda 21 that will be discussed at the next session of the CSD. It attempts to isolate the major trends and themes in Canadian responses to each of those chapters. It also includes short summaries of recent developments in topics related to the sectoral chapters discussed during the latest session of the CSD.

Book Synopsis PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN by : David HouŽto
Download or read book PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN written by David HouŽto and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa by : Lumumba-Kasongo, Tukumbi
Download or read book Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Lumumba-Kasongo, Tukumbi and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of ‘savage’ capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Development in Morocco by : Sylvia I. Bergh
Download or read book The Politics of Development in Morocco written by Sylvia I. Bergh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, Morocco has sought to present itself as a model of genuine and gradual reform, with decentralisation as a key tenet of this. Here, Sylvia Bergh investigates the dynamics of popular participation and local governance, testing the extent to which the current structure builds local capacity, or whether it is, in fact, a tool for 'soft' state control. She narrates the realities of local administration and civil society to shed critical light on questions of democratic transition in North Africa. Her assessment of decentralisation and participatory development projects in rural Morocco, and the legal and policy frameworks in which they operate, leads to the conclusion that they have generally not yet led to an expansion of a civil society able to build local capacity or enhance bottom-up empowerment. Grounded in an approach of the 'anthropology of policy', this book makes an important contribution to literature on the democratisation, development and governance in North Africa.
