Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Out of the Darkness Comes the Light", is a novel written by Andre Gilchrist. This novel follows the authors first book "You Thought You Couldn't Change, Either", which was a true and actual account of the life of Andre Gilchrist. This is a novel based on the fact that much of the book comes from actual facts while other parts are derived from the authors life experiences and events the author has lived through. The background information in this novel is actual. The author took an enormous amount of time researching the information from family members still alive, documents that have been saved and passed on from one generation to another to have the story as true and credible as possible. The main action takes place in a fictitious town called Hopesville, Michigan. The author through much of his life experiences during the course of the novel covers the time periods covering much of the civil rights area extending from Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in May, 1954 to and including other events lasting to the race riots in Newark, New Jersey and Detroit, Michigan in July of 1967. The novel touches on major events occurring in the present day such as hijacking and terrorism. The main theme that the author is trying to touch on in this novel is that there is always hope, hence comes the name of the town Hopesville. The author believes that when we cease to believe in hope we close the door to the future. The author wants to impress to those reading this manuscript that no matter how dark and gloomy and totally helpless and hopeless the times might seem to us and we feel that there is no reason to continue that Out of the Darkness Comes The Light!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Benjamin Franklin to Ragged Dick to Jack Kelly, hero of the Disney musical Newsies, newsboys have long intrigued Americans as symbols of struggle and achievement. But what do we really know about the children who hawked and delivered newspapers in American cities and towns? Who were they? What was their life like? And how important was their work to the development of a free press, the survival of poor families, and the shaping of their own attitudes, values and beliefs? Crying the News: A History of America's Newsboys offers an epic retelling of the American experience from the perspective of its most unshushable creation. It is the first book to place newsboys at the center of American history, analyzing their inseparable role as economic actors and cultural symbols in the creation of print capitalism, popular democracy, and national character. DiGirolamo's sweeping narrative traces the shifting fortunes of these "little merchants" over a century of war and peace, prosperity and depression, exploitation and reform, chronicling their exploits in every region of the country, as well as on the railroads that linked them. While the book focuses mainly on boys in the trade, it also examines the experience of girls and grown-ups, the elderly and disabled, blacks and whites, immigrants and natives. Based on a wealth of primary sources, Crying the News uncovers the existence of scores of newsboy strikes and protests. The book reveals the central role of newsboys in the development of corporate welfare schemes, scientific management practices, and employee liability laws. It argues that the newspaper industry exerted a formative yet overlooked influence on working-class youth that is essential to our understanding of American childhood, labor, journalism, and capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crying of Lot 49 is widely recognized as a significant contemporary work that frames the desire for meaning and the quest for knowledge within the social and political contexts of the '50s and '60s in America. In the introduction to this collection of original essays on Thomas Pynchon's important novel, Patrick O'Donnell discusses the background and critical reception of the novel. Further essays by five experts on contemporary literature examine the novel's "semiotic regime" or the way in which it organizes signs; the comparison of postmodernist Pynchon and the influential South American writer, Jorge Luis Borges; metaphor in the novel; the novel's narrative strategies; and the novel within the cultural contexts of American Puritanism and the Beat movement. Together, these essays provide an examination of the novel within its literary, historical, and scientific contexts.

I never lost sight of the challenges facing my family and doing whatever was necessary to help. Working after school was mandatory for our existence. I later went on to earn a BS in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee State University and and a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering from the University Of Toledo. I handled the opportunities as they presented them selves. The Corvette was suffering from poor quality and low customer satisfaction when I arrived and at my retirement we had achieved the highest quality and customer satisfaction ever experienced. Book excerpt: An award-winning author chronicles the settling of the Ohio River Valley, home to the defiant Shawnee Indians, who vow to defend their land against the seemingly unstoppable. They came on foot and by horseback, in wagons and on rafts, singly and by the score, restless, adventurous, enterprising, relentless, seeking a foothold on the future. European immigrants and American colonists, settlers and speculators, soldiers and missionaries, fugitives from justice and from despair—pioneers all, in the great and inexorable westward expansion defined at its heart by the majestic flow of the Ohio River. This is their story, a chronicle of monumental dimension, of resounding drama and impact set during a pivotal era in our history: the birth and growth of a nation. Drawing on a wealth of research, both scholarly and anecdotal—including letters, diaries, and journals of the era—Allan W. Eckert has delivered a landmark of historical authenticity, unprecedented in scope and detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all dream about it, but Wade Rouse actually did it. Discover his journey to live the simple life in this hilarious memoir. Finally fed up with the frenzy of city life and a job he hates, Wade Rouse decided to make either the bravest decision of his life or the worst mistake since his botched Ogilvie home perm: to uproot his life and try, as Thoreau did some 160 years earlier, to "live a plain, simple life in radically reduced conditions." In this rollicking and hilarious memoir, Wade and his partner, Gary, leave culture, cable, and consumerism behind and strike out for rural Michigan—a place with fewer people than in their former spinning class. There, Wade discovers the simple life isn’t so simple. Battling blizzards, bloodthirsty critters, and nosy neighbors equipped with night-vision goggles, Wade and his spirit, sanity, relationship, and Kenneth Cole pointy-toed boots are sorely tested with humorous and humiliating frequency. And though he never does learn where his well water actually comes from or how to survive without Kashi cereal, he does discover some things in the woods outside his knotty-pine cottage in Saugatuck, Michigan, that he always dreamed of but never imagined he’d find–happiness and a home. At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream is a sidesplitting and heartwarming look at taking a risk, fulfilling a dream, and finding a home–with very thick and very dark curtains.

Book excerpt: Gay men have a long, complicated history with the horror genre. While working behind-the-scenes to create some of the most iconic terrors on film (James Whale's Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man), they watched themselves portrayed on screen as sinister villains or as 'the best friend who dies first' victims. But in the last 20 years there has been a significant shift in the horror world courtesy of a growing number of out authors, screenwriters, directors and actors working to scare the crap out of you. Out In the Dark: Interviews with Gay Filmmakers, Actors and Authors introduces you to 31 of these men with interviews and insights into their work and their lives. From mainstream Hollywood filmmakers (Don Mancini, Child's Play and the Chucky films) to indie exploitation mainstays (Joshua Grannell aka Peaches Christ, All About Evil); prolific authors (Douglas Clegg, The Children's Hour) to small-press niche writers (Alan Kelly, Let Me Die a Woman); recently-out former teen idols (Wesley Eure, Land of the Lost and The Toolbox Murders) to gay indie staples (Matthew Montgomery, Socket and Pornography: A Thriller), Out In the Dark offers 31 unique perspectives on horror, being gay, and dozens of other subjects.
