Book Synopsis Policing and Punishing the Drinking Driver by : Ross Homel
Download or read book Policing and Punishing the Drinking Driver written by Ross Homel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing and Punishing the Drinking Driver is at one level about the impact of specific drinking-driving countermeasures (punishments imposed by courts on convicted offenders and random breath testing) in a particular place (New South Wales, Australia) in two particular years (1972 and 1983). At another level, however, the research reported herein is concerned with general questions of deterrence, and with the impact of the criminal justice system on the perception and behavior of a broad cross-section of the population. In contrast to much of the research in the drink-drive field, the research questions concentrate on the psychological and sociological processes whereby behavior is altered in the short-term as the result of a massive legal intervention or as the result of the routine imposition of legal punishments.

Book Synopsis The Southern Subculture of Drinking and Driving by : Julian B. Roebuck
Download or read book The Southern Subculture of Drinking and Driving written by Julian B. Roebuck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. The Southern Subculture of Drinking and Driving is part of the Criminal Justice series. Volumes in the Current Issues in Criminal Justice series focus on scholarship, original thought and research, and readability. This one is no different. Julian B. Roebuck and Komanduri S. Murty have produced a volume that will be of vital interest to those who study and create policy on drunken driving ・ one of the more enduring social problems of the past two decades. The volume has two major components that make it unique in the drunken driving literature. First, Roebuck and Murty focus on drunken drivers themselves and, through the use of a large dataset, add to our knowledge of that group of people by describing their characteristics. Second, and perhaps more important, Roebuck and Murty delve into the phenomenology of the drunken driver through a lengthy interview process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook relies on traffic research, psychology research, and criminological research to examine why some drivers are antisocial drivers and what can be done to persuade them to become prosocial drivers. Chapter 1 examines the problem of antisocial drivers on America's roads. These drivers are reckless, performing high-risk moves that endanger themselves and others. Antisocial driving is linked to the deterioration of social values and driving skills are linked to social skills. Chapter 2 clarifies the meaning of antisocial driving, which includes a myriad of illegal and dangerous driving behaviors, such as driving while under the influence of drugs and tailgating. Chapter 3 identifies the types of individuals who engage in antisocial driving behaviors, while chapter 4 reviews the research findings concerning the relationship between antisocial driving and antisocial behavior

Download or read book Drinkers, Drivers, and Bartenders written by Frank A. Sloan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-06-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United States Public Health Service, over 100,000 deaths a year are attributable to alcohol, including 20,000 highway fatalities. In response, legislatures have enacted various forms of regulation intended both to reduce alcohol consumption and to curb its harmful effects. This groundbreaking study focuses on one such form of regulation, the liability imposed on alcohol servers and social hosts by tort law. Basing their analysis on important new data from their extensive research and in-depth interviews with actors on all sides of the issue, the authors conclude that, despite their relative unpopularity, tort laws are very effective in reducing accidents—even more than criminal sanctions. Extraordinary in scope and exacting in detail, Drinkers, Drivers, and Bartenders: Balancing Private Choices and Public Accountability links alcohol problems, deterrence, and serving practices in a way no other work has been able to do and is certain to become a crucial reference point for researchers and policymakers alike.
