Book excerpt: The objective was to determine the training value of synthetic instrument flight training given in the Tactical Instrument Phase of the Army's Officer/Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Course. Synthetic training in that course is administered in a modified fixed wing instrument training device. One group of trainees received the standard 20-hour synthetic instrument flight training program, a second group received 10 hours, and a third group received no synthetic training. The synthetic training given in the modified fixed wing training device did not increase trainee helicopter instrument flight proficiency in terms of aircraft control and procedural skills. In addition, there were no significant differences among the three groups in attrition, instructor-assigned daily grades, amount of flight instructional time required to complete the phase, and final checkride grades. Book excerpt: "The U.S. Army uses the 2B24 Synthetic Flight Training System (SFTS) for the Instrument Phase of Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) training. The SFTS is an instrument simulator, mounted on a hydraulic motion platform, with no visual system. Its technology dates from the late 1960s. Its cockpit represents the UH-1, which has been replaced by the TH-67 training helicopter. The Army is concerned with the age, complexity and costs of the SFTS, at a time when PC- based simulators, like the Frasca 342 Primary Skills Trainer (PST) are available. The PST's cockpit represents the TH-67 helicopter. It has a visual display, but no motion system. Thirty-eight IEAW students were assigned to experimental (PST) or control (SFTS) groups. After 30 hr of simulator training, both groups completed 20 hr training in the TH-67. No students were eliminated or set back to later classes. Few significant differences in performance were noted, though SFTS trainees were more likely to indicate that training in the simulator had hindered performance in the aircraft. The PST seemed inferior to the SFTS in trim control. The research demonstrated that IERW students could learn instrument skills in a simpler, more economical simulator without hydraulic controls or a motion system."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: "Early fixed wing research demonstrated that potential cost and training benefits could be derived from simulation-augmented primary flight training. Unfortunately, more recent research in this area has been the exception, not the rule. This is especially true in the case of rotary wing (helicopter) aircrew training research. The present report reviewed the research literature on military aviation transfer of training (TOT) research, and examined the current U.S. Army Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) Program of Instruction. An in-depth review was also conducted on the recent IERW simulation research performed by the Army Research Institute (ARI) Rotary Wing Aviation Research Unit (RWARU). Review of the IERW TOT research showed that a combination of synthetic flight simulation and criterion-based training had the potential for saving training time and costs in the aircraft. Adaptive training aids such as the ARI RWARU Intelligent Flight Trainer, also showed promise. A research program, focusing on revising the current IERW program to optimize the use of simulation, was proposed. This program would include (a) criterion-based instructional strategies, (b) low cost simulation, and (c) investigation of different combinations of simulator vs. aircraft training events, in order to determine the optimal simulator/aircraft training mix."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Two studies were conducted to evaluate a fixed-wing instrument procedures training device and to develop a training program for use with the device. In the first study, a group of trainees at the U.S. Army Aviation School who recieved synthetic instrument flight training with the new device were compared with a control group of trainees who did not. The second study was concerned with development and evaluation of an instrument flight training program designed especially for use with the new device. It appears that the training concepts have application to other programs utilizing training devices. (Modified author abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulations have been a fixture of aviation training for many years. Advances in simulator technology now enable modern flight simulation to mimic very closely the look and feel of real world flight operations. In spite of this, responsible researchers, trainers, and simulation developers should look beyond mere simulator fidelity to produce meaningful training outcomes. Optimal simulation training development can unquestionably benefit from knowledge and understanding of past, present, and future research in this topic area. As a result, this volume of key writings is invaluable as a reference, to help guide exploration of critical research in the field. By providing a mix of classic articles that stand the test of time, and recent writings that illuminate current issues, this volume informs a broad range of topics relevant to simulation training in aviation.
