Current anxiety measures were developed using younger populations and lack validity of using an art therapy assessment tool (Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale: FEATS) (Gantt & Tabone, 1998) to measure anxiety in the elderly. Twenty-eight elderly participated in the study, nineteen tested in a group setting, and eight in one-on-one sessions. Results indicate FEATS is a valid measure of anxiety when administered on an individual basis, to persons for whom anxiety has been made salient. Future research should restrict the use of FEATS to one-on-one testing sessions. Additionally, the influence of priming anxiety should be further investigated.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) ratings of Draw a Person Picking an Apple from a Tree" (PPAT) drawings to assess for depression in chronic mental patients recovering in a social rehabilitation clubhouse setting. Thirty participants (n=15 male and n=15 female) were recruited on a voluntary basis to participate in this study. The FEATS ratings were compared to results of the Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). It was hypothesized that the art assessment technique (PPAT) rated with the FEATS would be as effective as the widely used and reliable assessment scale (BDI-II) in determining a participant's level of depression. Results did not support the hypothesis in that correlations between the FEATS and the BDI-II are weak and mostly positive.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes an important step in demonstrating that art therapy is a unique offering for persons aged sixty-five years and older, giving the potential for enrichment and healing in those lives. Describing the various ways in which art therapy can be used in the treatment of mental and emotional problems of older adults, the editor encourages the reader to use the suggestions and concepts within or tailor them to suit one's own specific working environment or population. Divided into three sections, this book proposes creative art therapies interventions, directives, and ideas along with model programs and examples of work in different settings. Section I discusses art therapy interventions and ideas for treatment, including working with ceramics, sandtray, memory books, and directives. Section II deals with working with specific populations of older adults, caregivers of older adults, and older adults in long-term care and residential settings. In addition, working with older adults with Alzheimers disease is addressed in this section. Section III focuses on working with individual older adult clients, home-based art therapy, grandmothers raising troubled teenagers, hospice patients, and mentally ill geriatrics. Readers will find this book to be a sourcebook of information. It will have great appeal to human service practitioners, health and mental health practitioners, and educators in social work, psychology, nursing, and counseling.

Book excerpt: Assessment in Art Therapy gives a unique insight into the diverse contemporary practices that constitute assessment in art therapy, providing an overview of the different approaches employed in Britain and the USA today. This professional handbook comprises three parts. 'Sitting Beside' explores the discursive and the relational in art therapy assessments with adults and children in different settings. 'Snapshots from the Field' presents a series of short, practice-based reports which describe art therapists working in private practice, secure settings and community mental health centres. 'A More Distant Calculation' consists of chapters that describe the development and use of different kinds of art-based assessment procedures developed on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as different kinds of research about art therapy assessment. Both students and practitioners alike will benefit from the wealth of experience presented in this book, which demonstrates how art therapists think about assessment; the difficulties that arise in art therapy assessment; and the importance of developing the theory and practice of art therapy assessment, whilst taking into account the changing demands of systems and institutions.

Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements. This report discusses the types of information that support findings of limitations in functional abilities relevant to work requirements, and provides findings and conclusions regarding the collection of information and assessment of functional abilities relevant to work requirements.

Book excerpt: The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), for disabled individuals, and their dependent family members, who have worked and contributed to the Social Security trust funds, and Supplemental Security Income (SSSI), which is a means-tested program based on income and financial assets for adults aged 65 years or older and disabled adults and children. Both programs require that claimants have a disability and meet specific medical criteria in order to qualify for benefits. SSA establishes the presence of a medically-determined impairment in individuals with mental disorders other than intellectual disability through the use of standard diagnostic criteria, which include symptoms and signs. These impairments are established largely on reports of signs and symptoms of impairment and functional limitation. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination considers the use of psychological tests in evaluating disability claims submitted to the SSA. This report critically reviews selected psychological tests, including symptom validity tests, that could contribute to SSA disability determinations. The report discusses the possible uses of such tests and their contribution to disability determinations. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination discusses testing norms, qualifications for administration of tests, administration of tests, and reporting results. The recommendations of this report will help SSA improve the consistency and accuracy of disability determination in certain cases.

Book excerpt: Actively engage older adults and help preserve their cognitive functioning using this innovative, integrative approach to therapeutic art and recreation. Use Therapeutic Thematic Arts Programming (TTAP(TM)) to create an enriching environment that effectively meets older adults' cognitive, emotional, physical, and social needs. In a clearly outlined nine-step process, Therapeutic Thematic Arts Programming involves exploring a broad theme through a range of artistic expressions, including music, dance, poetry, sculpture, and photography. Stimulating all areas of brain functioning, the TTAP method promotes older adults' creativity and encourages them to exercise their remaining strengths and abilities. The approach also increases social interaction with its focus on dynamic group interaction. While providing structure to creative art therapies, the TTAP method also allows for flexibility and individualization, allowing individuals within a group to have unique person-centered experiences. Appropriate for working with both well elders and those facing illness or disability, this integrative approach is solidly grounded in brain health research, biopsychology, and humanistic aging theories. Full of suggestions for themes and activities, Therapeutic Thematic Arts Programming will serve as a valuable manual for recreation therapists and activity professionals. Additionally, the book's discussion of current brain research, aging theories, and the benefits of creative art therapy make it a useful resource for instructors and students in the aging field. TTAP(TM) is a trademark of the author.
