In the last decade, more research has been conducted examining developmental education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of developmental math in a rural community college setting. Is developmental math an effective intervention? This study consisted of first time college students who took the COMPASS placement exam and scored 18-48. Students who scored 18-33 were placed in Math 098 (N=241) and received the developmental intervention. Math 098 is a semester-long course designed to prepare students for college-level math coursework, and it served as the intervention. Students who scored 34-48 were placed in Math 100 (N=469) and did not receive the developmental intervention. Because this represents a bandwidth close to a cut-score, these 2 groups are viewed as equivalent (Trochim, 2008). The initial intent of the study was to implement a regression-discontinuity design, but this failed to meet two necessary conditions. The researcher then executed an ANOVA, a series of chi-square goodnes-of-fit procedures, and 2 binary logistic regressions in order to determine if any significant differences and/or relationship existed between treatment and control groups. Data were collected for this retrospective, quantitative research study from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at the selected site. The selected site represents a medium-sized, rural community college located in the South. The findings in this study illustrate that those students who received the develomental intervention reported a statistically significant higher cummulative college GPAs than those who did not. The findings also illustrated that a statistically significant difference existed in regards to grades. Therefore, there was a statistically significant difference in grade distribution between both groups. When withdrawals and grades were evaluated together, no statistically significant distribution was observed. Two binary logisitic regressions were also conducted. No relationships were statistically significant between groups regarding Math 100 pass/fail rates or Math 100 completion rates. The researcher concluded that the findings suggest that Math 098 is an effective treatment for student achievement. The researcher recommended execution of more studies that replicate this model and examine rural populations.

High failure rates prevent students from achieving their academic goals, therefore; educational institutions are looking for methods to increase success in these courses. Such was the case at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), where high failure rates in developmental mathematics presented problems to the institution and its students. To increase pass rates in developmental education courses, a college-wide redesign initiative introduced in 2009 led to the implementation of a research-based model for developmental education. This model would be implemented in the form of Academic Success Centers (ASC) incorporating practices tailored to increase student success and persistence. To examine success rates of students taking developmental education courses in the ASCs, the College conducted a longitudinal predictive analytics study known as the Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID). The CHAID analyzed student success and retention of 10,051 developmental mathematics students over two academic terms. Additionally, the CHAID identified highly successful developmental mathematics teachers. These teachers, and the environment in which they taught (ASCs), became the basis of this qualitative study. The purpose of the study was two-fold. First, it focused on identifying pedagogical practices of highly successful developmental mathematics faculty who taught in the Academic Success Centers at FSCJ. Second, it focused on the areas of impact of the ASC as an environmental factor in student success. Data collected through observations, interviews, and documented analysis, along with the use of text mining, revealed that patterns emerged among participants in which they shared common beliefs about the importance of communicating with students, forming relationships with students, lecture and lab practices, the availability of physical resources, and the availability of academic support services within the environment where they interacted with their students. The intent of using the evidence from the key findings is to provide community college leaders with insight into pedagogical practices shared by highly successful developmental mathematics teachers and the role the learning environment serves in meeting students' educational needs.

Corequisite models are designed to allow students who place into pre-college level courses to complete the prerequisite material and college-level coursework simultaneously in their first semester. Traditionally, especially at open-access institutions like many of our nation's community colleges, students placed into developmental courses, are often charged full tuition to repeat coursework already completed in high school, wasting both time and money for the student. In this accelerated model, students who need remediation receive "just-in-time" delivery of remedial content, often from the same instructor as the college-level class they are enrolled in. This saves the student from having to face a long sequence of developmental courses and the challenges of re-enrolling in multiple semesters. The primary research question to compare how corequisite students' feelings about the subject matter differ from their peers who took a traditional developmental math sequence and if this approach helps close the achievement gaps between racial groups in mathematics. Developmental classes, which were originally designed to help underprepared students succeed in college, have become a substantial academic and financial barrier for students, especially those from historically underrepresented categories and corequisite course can hopefully fulfill that original purpose with more equitable and favorable results.

Under the new program (Program 2), this is shortened to only one beginning algebra course, after which students can then enroll in a credit-bearing mathematics course. A Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) was utilized to find differences in retention of students who have taken either of the mathematics pathways provided at the institution. The experiment also looked for qualitative differences in student and faculty experiences in these courses through the lens of a developmental education theory proposed by Wambach, Brothen, and Dikel (2000). Implications from this research extend to determine factors that could hinder student success, generate program improvement, and provide additional literature on reforms in developmental mathematics education.

To this end, developmental or remedial education is intended to improve the academic skills and knowledge of students who are unprepared for undergraduate coursework, particularly in the areas of mathematics, reading, and writing. Arguably, developmental education may also serve a broader purpose, "to provide the minimum levels of reading, writing, and math skills deemed essential for functional participation in a democratic society and individual sustainability in a free economy" (Bahr, 2008, p. 211). Whether remedial education is effectively achieving these goals, however, has been a matter of considerable debate (Bailey, Jaggars, & Scott-Clayton, 2013; Goudas & Boylan, 2012). On the one hand, only 20% of community college students referred to developmental math and 37% of students referred to developmental reading complete a college-level course in the corresponding subject within three years (Bailey, Jeong, & Cho, 2010). Moreover, despite high rates of enrollment in developmental education, large gaps in achievement and degree completion persist (Ross et al., 2012). In California community colleges, 71% of college-ready students eventually complete a credential or transfer, compared to 41% of academically unprepared students (California Community Colleges, 2013). On the other hand, a simple comparison of success rates may not accurately portray the effectiveness of developmental education since "it is possible that developmental students would have even weaker outcomes if these services were not available" (Bailey, 2009, p. 15). Seemingly low rates of success among developmental students may be at least partly attributable to low levels of academic preparation and motivation (Bettinger, Boatman, & Long, 2013). This brief seeks to portray some of the difficulties that arise in conceptualizing remedial success rates and determining the effectiveness of developmental programs. First, the organization and cost of developmental education in the United States are described. Second, remedial enrollment rates are estimated by institutional type and various demographic attributes. Third, variation in success rates is demonstrated by categorizing students according to referral and enrollment status, course subject, severity of skill deficit, and academic intentions. Fourth, research on the effectiveness of the traditional approach is summarized, focusing on the effects of remedial assignment, enrollment, and completion. Finally, several policy implications are offered.

The purpose of this study is to determine if students at selected Alabama community colleges are involved in remedial mathematics activities that are documented in the literature as best practices. Using student surveys, student focus groups, and faculty interviews from students and instructors currently involved in developmental mathematics courses, data were collected from three selected Alabama community colleges. Data analysis for the study incorporated qualitative and quantitative methodologies which were used to establish common themes in developmental math courses with an emphasis on best teaching and learning practices. The results of the study provided strong feedback and opinions on the topic of developmental mathematics education by students and faculty. By addressing the findings in this study with a renovation and/or revitalization of identified student services, updated placement testing procedures, and faculty professional development on the specific needs of developmental mathematics students, community colleges may find that numerous facets of their developmental education programs will incorporate and model documented best teaching and learning practices. The findings also led to suggestions for future research.
