Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of analysing Ge(Li) thermal neutron capture gamma spectra to obtain total gamma yields has been developed. Tie method determines both the yields from the well resolved gamma peaks in a spectrum as well as the gamma yields from the unresolved gamma lines which appear in the continuum portion of a spectrum. Accounting for the unresolved continuum enables a large fraction of total emitted energy to be observed, and values of 100% +/- 15% are obtained for the cases studied. The techniques used involve the determination of a peak response function suitable for the Ge(Li) pair spectrometer spectra being studied. The response function is used to strip off the effects of the peaks upon the background and unresolved data continuum. The continuum, which is due only to the unresolved lines, is broken into energy bins of 210 keV width and the gamma yield per bin is calculated. Results of the analysis and normalized yields are given for the rare earth samples of: Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Er. The capture data were obtained by using the MITR 4th irradiation facility operated with a Ge(Li) pair spectrometer.

Book excerpt: The document presents the results of an analysis of thermal capture gamma-ray spectral data obtained at the MIT Thermal Capture Gamma-Ray Facility using a Ge(Li)-NaI spectrometer. This data has been previously analyzed to obtain the energies and intensities of the resolved lines from radiative neutron capture in 75 natural elements. In the present work, the spectral data was unfolded to remove the effect of the spectrometer response, and the total gamma-ray yield for both discrete lines and continuum, was determined. The method of analysis, described previously by Harper and Rasmussen, is briefly summarized. Also discussed are the binding energies producing a consistent set of values. A comparison of some of the present results with previous data is given. The capture gamma-ray energies and intensities are tabulated and the original gamma-ray spectra are shown for each element. The total gamma-ray yield data for each element has been written onto magnetic tape in the ENDF format to facilitate the use of this data by radiation transport codes. A description of the tape preparation procedure and the data formats employed are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: Neutron-capture prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is particularly valuable as a non-destructive nuclear method in the measurement of elements that do not form neutron capture products with delayed gamma ray emissions. Inaccurate and incomplete data have been a significant hindrance in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of complicated capture gamma spectra by means of PGAA. This database was produced to improve the quality and quantity of required data in order to make possible the reliable application of PGAA in fields such as materials science, geology, mining, archaeology, environment, food analysis and medicine. The database provides a variety of tables for all natural elements (from H to U) including the following data: isotopic composition, thermal radiative cross-section (total and partial), Westcott g-factors, energy of the gamma rays (prompt and delayed), decay mode, half-life and branching ratios. The CD-ROM included in this publication contains the database, the retrieval system and important electronic documents related to the project.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a unique, non-destructive nuclear analytical method with multi-element capabilities. It is most effective if intense neutron beams (especially cold beams) of nuclear reactors are used to induce the prompt gamma radiation. Based largely on the authors' pioneering research in cold neutron PGAA, the handbook describes the methodology in self-contained manner and reviews recent applications. The library of prompt gamma ray data and spectra for all natural elements is a unique aid to the practitioner. The level is understandable by a broad audience, which facilitates teaching and training. The Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis is a comprehensive handbook written for those practising the method, wanting to implement it at a reactor facility, or just looking for a powerful non-destructive method of element analysis. The book is also useful for nuclear physics, chemistry and engineering scientists, scholars and graduate students interested in neutron-induced gamma ray spectroscopy and nuclear analytical methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the object of this work to study the gamma rays emitted by the products of the interaction of thermal neutrons with the nuclei of U-238, Th-232, U-235 and Pu-239 during and after irradiation and to explore some applications mainly to fuel element assay. An irradiation facility and a Ge(Li) detector cryostat were constructed for this purpose. A new method of assaying a fuel rod containing a mixture of plutonium and uranium oxide, based on the difference in the observed yield of the fission products 1-135 and Sr-92, has been developed. The energies and intensities of the thermal neutron capture gamma rays for U-238 and Th-232 were determined. Four new lines have been found in the energy region previously unexplored for U-238. For Th-232, 66 certain lines were found, compared to 7 lines in the literature. Many prompt gammas emitted 'by the highly excited fission products following the fission of U-235 and Pu-239 were resolved in the energy region above 1.4 MeV. For U-235 fissions, 57 lines were found, and for Pu-239, 51 certain lines were recorded. The use of prompt gammas for assaying fuel rods was investigated. An accuracy of about ± 7% was obtained for the analysis of U-238 content; ± 10% to ± 20% accuracy was obtained for U-235 analysis in the range of 1% to 2% enrichment; and ± 35% accuracy for the analysis of 0.25% Puenriched rods. It has been found that Ge(Li) detectors can be operated as fast neutron detectors and used to determine the relative neutron yield. With this method, the enrichment of uranium rods can be found with an accuracy of ± 1% to ± 2% in the range from 116 to 2% enrichment. Finally, some considerations were given to the use of prompt gamma rays for measuring the initial conversion ratio C and the neutron yield parameter [eta].

Book excerpt: The Committee on Dosimetry for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) was set up more than a decade ago at the request of the U.S. Department of Energy. It was charged with monitoring work and experimental results related to the Dosimetry System 1986 (DS86) used by RERF to reconstruct the radiation doses to the survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time it was established, DS86 was believed to be the best available dosimetric system for RERF, but questions have persisted about some features, especially the estimates of neutrons resulting from the Hiroshima bomb. This book describes the current situation, the gamma-ray dosimetry, and such dosimetry issues as thermal-neutron discrepancies between measurement and calculation at various distances in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It recommends approaches to bring those issues to closure and sets the stage for the recently convened U.S. and Japan Working Groups that will develop a new dosimetry for RERF. The book outlines the changes relating to DS86 in the past 15 years, such as improved numbers that go into, and are part of, more sophisticated calculations for determining the radiations from bombs that reach certain distances in air, and encourages incorporation of the changes into a revised dosimetry system.

This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is the precise determination of the /sup 238/U neutron capture yield (i.e., the probability of neutron absorption) as a function of neutron energy with the highest available neutron energy resolution. The motivation for this undertaking arises from the central role played by the /sup 238/U neutron capture process in the calculation of the neutron balance of both thermal reactors and fast breeder reactors. The present measurement was performed using the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA) facility. The pulsed beam of neutrons from the ORELA facility is collimated on a sample of /sup 238/U. The neutron capture rate in the sample is measured, as a function of neutron time-of-flight (TOF), by detecting the gamma rays from the /sup 238/U(n, .gamma.)/sup 239/U reaction with a large gamma-ray detector surrounding the /sup 238/U sample. At each energy, the capture yield is proportional to the observed capture rate divided by the measured intensity of the neutron beam. The constant of proportionality (the normalization constant) is obtained as the ratio of theoretical to experimentally measured areas under small /sup 238/U resonances where the resonance parameters have been determined from high resolution /sup 238/U transmission measurements. The cross section for the reaction /sup 238/U(n, .gamma.)/sup 239/U can be derived from the measured capture yield if one applies appropriate corrections for multiple scattering and resonance self-shielding. The present work will allow the extension of the resolved resonance region in /sup 238/U from its current limit of 4 keV up to 20 keV. In addition, some 200 /sup 238/U neutron resonances in the energy range from 250 eV to 10 keV have been observed which had not been detected in previous measurements. These results are relevant for both reactor design and for the understanding of the structure of the (/sup 238/U + n) compound nucleus. 33 refs., 20 figs., 9 tabs.
