Book excerpt: High-power ultrasound was used to study fatigue behavior of three alloys (Udimet 500, 17-4PH, and Ti-6A1-4V) since the loading frequency is very high (f = 20 kHz) and a great number of cycles can be obtained in a short time. The specimens were excited in resonance at the first longitudinal mode in such a way that maximum strain occurred in the middle and maximum displacement amplitude was obtained at the end of the specimen. Fatigue life behavior of the three alloys were investigated at ultrasonic (/ = 20 kHz) and conventional loading frequency (f = 20 to 50 Hz). Miniature dynamic strain gages were employed to measure maximum strain values during ultrasonic fatigue tests. The effect of high strain rate on fatigue crack initiation and propagation failure mechanism was examined. Fracture surface of specimens was observed by means of a scanning electron microscope. Fatigue resistance was found to depend upon ultrasonic and mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the material, loading regime, and surface condition of the specimen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of mechanical structures with predictable and improved durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading researchers in the field, this book, along with the complementary books Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Fundamentals and Application to Damage and Design (both also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. This book deals with multiaxial fatigue, thermomechanical fatigue, fretting-fatigue, influence of defects on fatigue life, cumulative damage and damage tolerance, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of materials science and engineering, mechanical, nuclear and aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: In this thesis Christian Sohar describes his investigation into the gigacycle fatigue behavior of tool steels. In an interdisciplinary approach he uses knowledge and methods from a wide variety of disciplines including materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics and mechanical engineering. Christian gives a general introduction into steel tools and fatigue in materials. Later he extensively discusses the experimental techniques and results. Indeed it is the detail of the content in this thesis which makes it an invaluable resource for students entering the field and scientists working in related disciplines. Overall, the thesis helps us understand more about the mechanical behavior of metallic materials with complex microstructure and high hardness.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to investigate the high cycle fatigue behavior of a titanium alloy using an ultrasonic fatigue system. Fatigue testing up to one billion cycles under fully reversed loading conditions was performed to determine the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V. Endurance limit results were compared to similar data generated on conventional servohydraulic test systems and electromagnetic shaker systems to determine if there are any frequency effects. In addition, specimens were tested with and without cooling air to determine the effects of temperature on the fatigue behavior. Results indicate that the fatigue strength determined from ultrasonic testing was consistent with conventional testing. However, preliminary results indicate that cooling air may increase the fatigue limit stress at very long lives.

Book excerpt: This text describes the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT) which is based on the unification of Newton’s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton’s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world including USA, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Spain, China, India and U.K.

Book excerpt: In order to predict fatigue crack propagation at very long life a piezoelectric fatigue machine was built in our laboratory. This device is able to fail specimen at 1010 cycles and to determine thresholds up to 109 mm/cycle. The originality of this machine resides in the possibility to apply simultaneously to a specimen a constant tension effect and longitudinal ultrasonic vibratory effort with adjustable amplitude. That is to say, the R ratio can be varied from -1 to 0.9.
