Les étudiants capables de juger de manière réaliste leur travail disposent d'une base solide pour leurs exercices futurs. Ils sont capables d'organiser eux-mêmes leur formation et de conserver leur motivation intacte. Afin d'objectiver la capacité d'autoévaluation d'étudiants lors de travaux pratiques de prothèses conjointes unitaires de troisième année en odontologie, une étude à été réalisée. Après une phase de faisabilité, deux grilles d'autoévaluation des préparations coronaires et des provisoires ont été réalisées. Il a été tout d'abord testé les capacités de reproductibilité de l'évaluation de l'étudiant. Par la suite, 20 modèles ont été soumis anonymement à l'appréciation de deux enseignants et deux moniteurs (étudiants en fin de cursus universitaires). Les évaluations ont été réitérées deux semaines plus tard. Les résultats ont montré que les autoévaluations des étudiants étaient reproductibles. Les étudiants, bien que surestimant le plus souvent leur travail, étaient en accord avec les évaluations des enseignants et de manière moins précises avec celles des moniteurs. Cette étude préliminaire encourage l'intégration l'autoévaluation dans le programme d'études odontologique car elle permet de s'assurer que les étudiants sont compétents non seulement dans les procédures cliniques mais également dans leur capacité de s'évaluer de manière constructive.

L'objectif de l'étude est d'évaluer le niveau de compétence d'auto-évaluation et de correction des défauts des étudiants de 4e année du département d'odontologie de la faculté de Santé de l'Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III, à partir de modèles maxillaires et mandibulaires imprimés en 3D. Les étudiants se sont majoritairement sous-estimés. La réduction occlusale et la réduction axiale des préparations sont les deux critères les moins précisément auto-évalués. Les finitions et la réduction occlusale sont les deux critères les moins bien corrigés sur les modèles imprimés en 3D. Il sera intéressant de penser à une nouvelle pédagogie d'auto-évaluation, axée sur le travail des critères posant le plus de difficultés aux étudiants.

L'impact de ces changements sur la qualité de la formation pratique des étudiants ne pouvant être évalué, il semble intéressant de réfléchir à de nouvelles pistes pédagogiques pour renforcer l'enseignement pratique. L'auto-évaluation pourrait être un outil pédagogique important à développer afin d'optimiser au maximum les vacations hospitalières. Par ailleurs, au terme de six années d'études, 92% des jeunes chirurgiens-dentistes se destinent à l'exercice libéral où le praticien est seul juge de son travail. Face à une patientèle de plus en plus exigeante en matière de traitements prothétiques, il est impératif au jeune diplômé en chirurgie dentaire d'être capable de s'auto-évaluer pour une pratique clinique sûre et efficace. L'apprentissage de l'auto-évaluation est un objectif pédagogique important. Cependant, il est difficile pour un étudiant en fin de cursus de prendre conscience de ses points forts et de ses lacunes. Dans ce travail, il est proposé une étude visant à mettre en évidence les capacités d'auto-évaluation des étudiants de 5e année de la faculté d'Odontologie de Paris Diderot en comparant la note que s'attribue chaque étudiant à la fin de la réalisation d'une étape clinique en prothèse fixée à celle proposée par l'enseignant. L'objectif de ce travail est de développer l'autocritique des étudiants en Odontologie face à leurs travaux de prothèse fixée, pour les rendre parfaitement autonomes en fin de cursus, en élaborant un guide clinique d'auto-évaluation qui sera mis à disposition des étudiants de la faculté d'Odontologie de Paris Diderot. Cet outil aura pour but de perfectionner l'apprentissage de la prothèse fixée dans le cursus universitaire et de permettre au futur diplômé d'être plus confiant dans sa pratique.

Quatre promotions d'étudiants en chirurgie dentaire (D1 à T1) ont évalué au cours de l'année universitaire 2010/2011 trois montages de PTA revenant du laboratoire au moyen d'une grille d'évaluation mise au point par les enseignants du service de prothèse de l'UFR. Deux évaluations à un mois d'intervalle ont été réalisées par chaque étudiant pour chaque montage afin d'évaluer la constance de la capacité à évaluer. Trois enseignants du service de prothèse ont également évalué ces trois montages afin de comparer l'évaluation des étudiants à la leur. La notation des enseignants reste très stable d'une évaluation à l'autre. Par contre chez les étudiants, les écarts entre les deux évaluations peuvent être relativement importants mais on note cependant une tendance à la réduction de ces écarts au fur et à mesure que les étudiants progressent dans leur curriculum. Plusieurs facteurs peuvent expliquer ces variabilités intra et inter individuelles lors de l'évaluation par les étudiants: le niveau de connaissance, l'expérience et la confiance en soi. Le fait de demander aux étudiants d'évaluer des montages de prothèse qui reviennent du laboratoire permet à la fois de voir s'ils ont acquis les connaissances sur les règles de montage des dents en PTA mais également permet de mettre dans des situations de résolution de véritables caas cliniques et de voir s'ils seront plus tard capables de les appliquer sur leur lieu de travail. Il est donc important d'apprendre aux étudiants à évaluer un travail voir à auto-évaluer leur propre travail au cours de leur cursus.
