Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the empirical determinants of household saving using data from 21 OECD countries for 1975-95. A particular focus is the influence of the tax and social security systems on household saving. The paper therefore extends the usual set of explanatory variables used to explain household saving behavior to include variables that capture the structure of the tax system and the financing and generosity of the social security and welfare system. These variables are found to have an important impact on household saving. Accordingly, by changing the design of these systems, governments may be able to influence saving.

Book excerpt: The personal savings rate is an unsettling subject, because every economist has distinctive opinions on the determinants of consumption, saving and borrowing behaviors of households. For instance, many individuals assume that there is a positive relationship between real disposable income and the personal savings rate. In other words, saving amongst households have increased with the growth of household wealth. On the other hand, some individuals deem that there is an inverse relationship between both variables, so much that this topic has always demanded further research to be completed. Because of my awareness and experience relating to this topic, I have chosen to examine this question. This paper will review the effect and significance of the savings rate by analyzing real disposable income, real household net worth, interest rates, and labor productivity. I will make predictions on the results. I am going to study the positive or negative outcomes between them through data examination and analysis. This thesis will also compare the data and results of the households in the United States between 1980 and 2017. This will allow us to determine if these variables are the major determinants of the personal saving rate.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes and reconciles macro and micro evidence on savings and factors that affect savings, as well as possible policy implications. At the aggregate level, the main question is how savings are affected by growth and macroeconomic policies and variables (fiscal policy, exchange rate, for example) and the breadth of financial markets. Some of these macro determinants can be reconciled with microeconomic evidence of the savings behavior of households. Using macroeconomic quarterly data and household survey data, the analysis explores the determinants of the savings rate at the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels, using the typical econometric models used in the literature (long-term co-integration relation and short-term error correction model for the macro determinants; linear multivariate models for the micro determinants). The long-term relationship indicates that a 10-percent increase in gross domestic product per capita would add 3.7 percentage points to the savings rate in the long run. The short-term relationship depicts a strong catch-up process to the long-run equilibrium, with quarterly changes in gross domestic product per capita and openness strongly correlated with quarterly changes in the savings rate. The characteristics of households that represent the volatility of expected income, such as education and access to borrowing or remittances, significantly impact saving rates. The macroeconomic and microeconomic analyses of the determinants of saving rates in Armenia point to three policy areas: the macroeconomic environment, the financial sector, and the role of remittances.

Book excerpt: The saving rate in Sri Lanka remains low and most of the studies have not been conclusive on factors influencing in savings in developing countries. The policy makers' understanding on household financial decision-making is important for the design of social welfare and consumer policy and household economic decisions about saving and spending are of interest to credit institutions, which should provide households with adequate financial services. This study adopted a micro economic approach in investing the factors that influence savings among household of farmers, teachers and entrepreneurs in Colombo district. The sample composed of 90 farmers, teachers and entrepreneurs which was selected through convenience sampling under the non-probability sampling technique. To collect the primary data from the units of sample the researcher used survey method. This study used basically four main factors of demographic, socioeconomic, income and individual factors to test the determinants of household savings. The main findings of this study was household savings are determined by socioeconomic factors, income factors and individual factors while demographic factors do not show significant association with level of savings.

Book excerpt: This document describes and analyzes the behavior of household savings and its determinants. It takes into account a long run analysis for the period 1950-2004 based on national accounts data and a short run analysis at a microeconomic level, using the information from the quality of life surveys realized in 1997 and 2003. Based on an analysis of co-integration, we found a long term relationship among the rate of household savings, the Gross Internal Product (GIP) per capita, the direct taxes and a measurement of financial deepening. At microeconomic level, the analysis provides the household saving rates grouped by different socioeconomic characteristics of the households and different definitions of saving related to investment in human capital and the purchase of durables goods. In addition, we present life time profiles of consumption, income and saving from a synthetic cohort technique constructed to overcome the lack of longitudinal information. The results show that the income as much as the consumption registers a behavior of the inverted U, suggesting that in the Colombian case there is no evidence that the Life-Cycle hypothesis should be validated. Finally, differences in comparing information of the household savings at an aggregate level with the obtained from the surveys may be caused by methodology reasons and for changes in the distribution of income and expenditure registered between 1997 and 2003.

In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes saving patterns and determinants in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), including key policy variables and regimes. The review of previous empirical studies on LAC saving reveals contradictions and omissions. This paper presents empirical results of an extensive search of determinants of private and public saving rates, adding previously neglected variables (including different measures of key external prices and macroeconomic policy regimes), in linear form and in interactions with other saving determinants. It analyzes statistical differences in saving determinants between LAC and the rest of the world in a nested econometric framework, and discusses differences across three country subgroups within LAC. The results highlight commonalities and differences in saving behavior between LAC and other world regions, as well as within LAC, identifying the role of key policy variables and regimes.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Addis Ababa University (Addis Ababa University), course: Economics, language: English, abstract: The objective of this paper was to investigate the macroeconomic determinants of gross national saving in Ethiopia using time series annual data form 1970/71-2010/11. In this study, effort has been made to identify the long run and short run determinants of national saving in Ethiopia using an ARDL bounds testing approach and ECM to capture both short run and long run relationships. Estimated results revealed that financial development (FD) and Current account deficit (CAD) are significant determinants of gross national saving in Ethiopia in the long run. But gross national disposable income (LGNDI), dependency ratio (DR), budget deficit (BD) and inflation, approximated by consumer price index (CPI), found to be statistically insignificant determinants of gross national saving in Ethiopia in the long run. However, in the short run, except consumer price index (CPI) and dependency ratio (DR) the rest of the explanatory variables such as gross national disposable income (LGNDI), financial development (FD), current account deficit (CAD) and budget deficit (BD) found to have statistically significant meaning in explaining gross national saving in Ethiopia. The speed of adjustment has value 0.66978 with negative sign, which showed the convergence of saving model towards long run equilibrium. The overall findings of the study underlined the importance of raising the level of income in a sustainable manner, minimizing the adverse impacts of budget deficit and inflation rate and creating competitive environment in the financial sector.
