Book excerpt: O cultivo do abacaxizeiro e uma atividade que exige um investimento relativamente elevado, principalmente quando desenvolvida em novas áreas, constituíndo-se a mão-de-obra e os insumos nos fatores que mais encarecem o custo de produção, 43,7 e 43,1%, respectivamente lento, ressente-se bastante da competição de ervas daninhas, cuja ação poderá provocar danos consideráveis no rendimento da cultura. Na Guine obteve-se um peso médio de fruto de 609g nas parcelas testemunha, contra 1.553g (2,5 vezes mais) nas parcelas mantidas limpas (Py, 1969). Na Bahia, Reinhardt & Cunha (dados não publicados) observaram que as parcelas testemunha (sem controle) quase que não produziram frutos, os poucos colhidos apresentando peso médio de 200g, contra mais de 1.000g daqueles colhidos nas parcelas onde foi feito o controle de ervas. Dai porque recomendar-se manter as plantios de abacaxi sempre livres de plantas invasoras, sendo mencionado para as condições da Bahia de 12 a 16 capinas por ciclo (Cunha, 1973), o que torna esse item um dos mais caros do sistema de produção. Diante desse fato e pela ausência de estudos sobre as épocas de maior concorrência de ervas com o abacaxizeiro, pesquisas vem sendo desenvolvidas pela EMBRAPA/CNPMF, na Bahia, visando determinar o(s) periodo(s) critico(s) de competição de ervas daninhas na cultura do abacaxi.
