Book excerpt: As the use of advanced composite materials continues to grow in the aviation industry, damage-detection techniques need to be developed and tested. Impact damage on aluminum aircraft structures can be detected from obvious surface indications. This is not the case with composite aircraft structures. Large interply delaminations and substructure disbonding may occur as a result of an impact, often leaving no visual indications of damage. This project investigates the use of various nondestructive inspection techniques to detect hail impact damage in solid laminate aircraft structures ranging from simple flat plate panels to full-scale representative fuselage structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Object Debris and Damage in Aviation discusses both biological and non-biological Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and associated Foreign Object Damage (FOD) in aviation. The book provides a comprehensive treatment of the wide spectrum of FOD with numerous cost, management, and wildlife considerations. Management control for the debris begins at the aircraft design phase, and the book includes numerical analyses for estimating damage caused by strikes. The book explores aircraft operation in adverse weather conditions and inanimate FOD management programs for airports, airlines, airframe, and engine manufacturers. It focuses on the sources of FOD, the categories of damage caused by FOD, and both the direct and indirect costs caused by FOD. In addition, the book provides management plans for wildlife, including positive and passive methods. The book will interest aviation industry personnel, aircraft transport and ground operators, aircraft pilots, and aerospace or aviation engineers. Readers will learn to manage FOD to guarantee air traffic safety with minimum costs to airlines and airports.

Book excerpt: The impact responses and the damage states in flat composite sandwich panels with thin face sheets were investigated in Phase I and were found to be dependent on the diameter of the spherical steel impactor. The residual strength of impact-damaged sandwich panels under static in-plane compressive loads was reported to be dependent on the nature of the damage state. The impact damage due to blunt impactors is difficult to detect in service and depending on the size of the damage, can degrade the residual strength more than a punctured skin. The detectability of impact damage states using different field inspection techniques was experimentally investigated for different facesheet and core combinations. The impact damage in honeycomb core sandwich panels was better detected using instruments that exploit the local vibrational characteristics of the sandwich structure, while the damage in foam core panels was more amenable to acoustic-based techniques. The effect of facesheet stiffness on the sensitivity of the field inspection techniques was investigated and the results are reported. The behavior of the sandwich panels with impact damage and subjected to the in-plane static compressive loads was investigated in detail. The impact damage behaved in a characteristic sequence of events leading to contrasting final failure modes. The sequence of events was found to be dependent on the facesheet stiffness and the transverse compressive properties of the core material. The effects of panel curvature on the impact damage resistance of sandwich panels were experimentally investigated for limited sandwich configurations. The effects of the radius of cylindrical panels, boundary conditions, facesheet type, and core type were also examined. The decreasing radius of curvature increased the global bending stiffness but decreased the local contact stiffness due to the radial compressive properties of the honeycomb core.

Book excerpt: Carbon fibre reinforced composite structures are being used for up to 50% of the airframe weight in modern airliner designs, including pressurised fuselage barrels and main wings. Composite materials are susceptible to damage from inadvertent impacts. The damage takes the form of surface dents often associated with subsurface delaminations of a significantly greater area than the visible dent. While staff in the aviation industry are familiar with metallic structures and how they respond to accidental impacts, pilots, maintenance staff and ground crew may be less familiar with the way in which composite materials respond to impacts, making them less able to recognise and thus detect, a damaged composite structure. This study was performed in order to establish the appearance of surface flaws arising from impact to a polymer composite aircraft structure, and then to determine the relation between detection reliability using visual inspection procedures and the size and shape of surface flaws.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the fail-safe and damage tolerance approaches, allowing weight savings and increasing aircraft reliability and structural integrity. The application of the damage tolerance approach requires extensive know-how of the fatigue and fracture properties, corrosion strength, potential failure modes and non-destructive inspection techniques, particularly minimum detectable defect and inspection intervals. In parallel, engineering practice involving damage tolerance requires numerical techniques for stress analysis of cracked structures. These evolved from basic mode I evaluations using rough finite element approaches, to current 3D modeling based on energetic approaches as the VCCT, or simulation of joining processes. This book provides a concise introduction to this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft structures are susceptible to damage due to high velocity hail ice impact. These impacts can create nonvisible damage in the structure, jeopardizing its structural integrity. Experiments were completed with simulated hail ice (SHI) impacting T800/3900-2 carbon/epoxy tape laminates and aluminum panels at various angles. The angled impacts were similar to the normal impacts in the failure propagation of ice as well as the size and shape of the delaminations. Experimental failure threshold values were not in agreement with the trigonometric scaling of the failure threshold energy (FTE) or the failure threshold velocity (FTV) of normal impacts but seemed to be bounded by the two curves. Simulations in Abaqus/Explicit were created at the experimental failure threshold velocities (FTV) to study delaminations. Peak interlaminar shear stresses were found to be between 104 and 130 MPa. The peak interlaminar shear stress was a good indication of failure onset, while the Northwestern University (NU) and Hashin-Rotem failure criteria seem to require adjusted material properties for the higher strain rates. Dent depths in the composite panels were not indications of existing delaminations, and there was no correlation found between dent depth and delamination size. Impacts on the aluminum panels with similar energies created dent depths that were an order of magnitude higher than the composite panels and thus clearly more visibly detectable.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to their high performance and weight efficiency, carbon fiber composites are increasingly being used in aircraft primary structure applications. Exposed composite structures (e.g., fuselage lower body) are susceptible accidental impacts by ground service equipment (GSE). The very high mass (over 10,000 kg) of GSE impact can involve high energy (over 1000 J) and thus can induce significant internal damage. Furthermore, the large contact area potentially involved with GSE impact can create significant internal delamination and fiber failure without leaving exterior-visible signs that any damage has occurred. The objectives of the research described herein are to : (1) conduct experimental investigation into the composite aircraft damage caused by GSE impact, (2) examine the small-scale failure modes in focused, element-level studies, (3) establish a finite element modeling methodology involving detailed simulation capability that is validated via small-scale tests, and (4) apply these modeling capabilities to accurately predict full-scale structural behavior without adjustment (e.g., tuning) of modeling input parameters.
