Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For people who were poor, black, and from the working-class, growing up in a British Caribbean colony during the 1900s, was a very difficult experience. However, from about the 1930s, enlightenment, ideological challenges, and change were finding sound footing in the area, more than ever before. During that time, British control and exploitation of the islands were being disrupted and challenged aggressively, by labor unionists, and Pan Africanists. Further, by the mid-1900s, the British interest in, and their ability to manage the islands successfully, were failing. At that time, there was the disruptive political thrust from local labor unionists for changes in the islands' story. That emerging new leadership saw and promoted education as a necessary path to the future, for working-class people in the islands. After the author learned to read, having been encouraged by an older sister, he read widely from the books available, and his life began to experience transformation. The author noted that his love for reading, plus a growing exposure to education, initiated the change and inspiration beyond the limiting society and thinking, into which he was born. In time, Whitman's academic push helped him to become an educator, mountain climber, long distance swimmer, photographer, and more. In all the changes which have come to the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, he sees the local leaders' push against the evils of British colonialism. In time, there was enlightenment and growth from education, also through the love and inspiration of God. Those were major forces which contributed to the reformation now seen in lives, and around the islands. In this book, My Birth Was Not Destiny, the author looks back at his life in Nevis, and beyond. He attributes his successes to focused struggles, the illuminating power of education, and God's continuing intent to intervene in human lives, always for good. Dr. Browne also expresses a truth that his children, students, the community, and the wider world, as a result of education and careful academic concentration, can in time, learn, grow, have their own sense of a transformative experience, as their lives become inspired and refashioned. Over time, they too will reach toward the future, intending to leave special markings on the sands of their time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may remember David as the boy who killed the giant with a slingshot. You may see him as the King of Israel. You may know that many of the Psalms are attributed to him. However, do you know how those Psalms were written? Did he just sit down one day and decide to write a nice Psalm? Nothing could be further from the truth. The Psalms were a natural part of his everyday experiences in prayer, admonition to the public, discourses with friends and music. Flight from Destiny Psalmwriter: The Chronicles of David, Book I is the first volume of a six volume devotional novel on David and his life. The boy who became a king may amaze youoh not because he was extraordinary, but because he was so ordinary. He was just like each of us. Here is a boy who made his way through adolescence to manhood by the skin of his teeth. He fell in love and then lost his love. He acted crazy in front of royalty, showed great courage in facing the giant and yet was scared to death of those who hunted him for one purpose - to kill him. A number of hair-raising, exciting adventures - several of which bring him close to death will keep you on the edge of your seat. You may cry, but you will surely laugh at some of the hilarious situations in which he and those around him find themselves. Sometimes a person just needs to face life as it is and go on. David had a hard time with this thought. For years, he felt his anointing by Samuel had been for the purpose of killing the giant. He resisted the thought that it was for any other undertaking. This was not the destiny of a shepherd. Heroes were the ones who should become kings. Yet during this confusing time of his young adult years, he encounters four men that will have a mighty impact on his life. One of them will save his life and another of them will have the audacity to tap the warriors chest in chastisement. Who will save the man and his followers when they are backed up against a chasm with six thousand soldiers against them? The answer may surprise you. Get ready to empathize with David. Be prepared to experience his heartache, self-doubt, loneliness, despair, defeat and depression as well as his life of praise, prayer and victory. We will look in on his marital problems and raise his children with him. If we are ordinary like the man of this volume, then we may just see ourselves running from life sometimes - discouraged and defeated. We question God and search for him. In fear, we run from lifes problems and although we may not have someone trying to kill us, we still struggle with our marriages and our children. We still hurt terribly when we have lost that mate or that best friend. We want to know what Gods will is for us and how not to succumb to temptation and then when we do fall - how to come back to God with a contrite heart.

Book excerpt: Major Kanwal Sethi was a prominent character in the early days of independent Kenya’s military story—but his personal story is more fascinating still. Here he regales readers with tales of his life, from its beginnings as an ambitious young man who learned early on about the importance of honour, hard work and selflessness. Shaping Destiny tells Sethi’s story, from the migration of his Indian family to colonial Kenya, where he witnessed his new homeland’s nascent evolution. In this environment, Sethi launches himself on a military path that’s colourful, dramatic, and often grippingly turbulent. In Shaping Destiny, readers get intimate access to Sethi’s adventures as a distinguished and decorated career soldier—a nontraditional choice for an Indian. More than that, they get access to the ups and downs of an emerging country and continent during a period in world history that saw a great number of former colonies break free and establish themselves in a newly independent era. The resulting storytelling is excellent; peppered with tumult, courage, resilience and the conviction of a man of his word. Here is a soldier through and through, from his enlistment in the King’s African Rifles of the British Army in 1962, through his esteemed officer training at Sandhurst and Camberley in the UK, and his time served with the newly formed Kenya Army. Throughout, this remarkable man—who lifted his life from truly humble beginnings in rural Africa to a reinvention as a businessman in Canada, the country to which he retired at the end of his army career—offers extraordinary adventure, encounters with captivating characters, and the opportunity for authentic enlightenment.
