Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an accessible and state-of-the-art survey of current research on social dilemmas. A social dilemma arises when actions that are justifiable in terms of individual rationality (e.g. over-harvesting resources, or using private instead of public transportation) threaten the common good and in the long run the individual's own self-interest as well. The study of social dilemmas has important links with many areas in psychology, as well as with cognate disciplines such as risk analysis, environmental science, political science, and economics. Accordingly, the book should appeal not only to psychologists but also to a wider audience of scholars and researchers. Contributors include both established authorities and recent innovators, and the organization and contents of the book reflect the most recent trends in this exciting area. Increased attention is given to modeling dynamics and processes in social dilemmas, and greater emphasis placed on exploring structural solutions to dilemmas. New findings and theoretical developments regarding group and inter-group processes are highlighted and a move is made away from a heavy reliance on laboratory experiments and game theory to field studies and real-world applications. A scholarly prospective chapter at the beginning and an integrative concluding chapter provide useful overviews of the area and the contributions to the book.

Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this volume presents research-based fictionalized case studies from experts in the field of dance education, examining theory and practice developed from real-world scenarios that call for ethical decision-making. Dilemmas faced by dance educators in the studio, on stage, in recreation centers and correctional facilities, and on social media are explored, accompanied by activities for humanizing dance pedagogy. These challenges converge from educational policies and mandates developed over the past two decades, including teacher-proof "scripted" curriculum, high-stakes testing, standardization, and methods-centered teacher preparation; difficulties are often perpetuated by those who want to make change happen but do not know how.

Book excerpt: Life is messy. It isn't a color-within-the-lines exercise. It's a wild and outrageous invitation full of uncertain outcomes. The mess of life is both inevitable and unexpected. It is filled with delightful mysteries and frustrating predicaments. In our disposable culture, we throw broken things away. So, what will we do with broken people, broken relationships, broken institutions, broken families, and of course, our very own broken selves? We are all broken and wounded. This book is about putting our lives back together, and allowing ourselves to be put back together, when life doesn't turn out as we expected it to. Based on his own heart-wrenching personal journals, Matthew Kelly shares how the worst three years of his life affected him, by exploring this question: Can someone who has been broken be healed and become more beautiful and more lovable than ever before? The answer will fill you with hope. There has never been a more urgent need for us to attend to what is happening within us. This is quite simply the right book at the right time.

Book excerpt: There are so many musicians out there who have a passion and a love for their art. We spend hundreds of hours learning how to play our instrument, hours learning how to create songs that we're proud of, thousands of dollars on equipment we desire, and more. But let me ask you a question... How do you balance your art when you turn it into a business? You either have this art you've created and you feel a little weird trying to take something as personal as your music and turn it into something like a business, or you're someone who is potentially in or wants to get into the music business because there is an opportunity to become known or even well-known and potentially achieve some riches. Well if you're in this dilemma of not knowing whether you're going to make the move into fully committed music entrepreneur, then Musicians Dilemma is going to take you through the process of what it looks like to balance your art with your business so one doesn't effect the other in a negative way. There are musicians who are concerned that looking at their music through the lens of a business will somehow cheapen their relationship to music, other musicians are concerned after putting in a lot of effort to their music career that there has got to be a better way to look at this business. Musicians Dilemma will address both of these common concerns and give you the right shifts to make in your life to have a more balanced approach to both your art and your business as they work together in your music business. If you're ready to make the move, pick up your copy of Musicians Dilemma today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here the collected papers explore the whole question of the relation between the mythopoetic and the moral in the context of the Mahabharata. Here we have a story of extreme complexity, characters that are unforgettable, and a cosmic context in which gods and men alike grapple with destiny. The obligations of kinship and friendship jostle with each other. The women characters, as in everyday life, seem to bear a very heavy load of the burden of life and to stand in a key position in almost every conflict. We are presented with predicaments at every turn. At times these predicaments seem to be aggravated by social structure. At other times they are cushioned by it. Philosophical tangles tied up with karma and dharma are interwoven with the mythopoetic material. Perhaps philosophical issues are pinpointed rather more than they are in Greek epic literature. The essays in this book treat the Mahabharata from an unusual angle, fastening on the moral dilemmas it presents. How universal are the dilemmas faced by the characters in the story, and are the dilemmas in fact resolved? In dealing with these questions, the discussions range over the meaning of the purusarthas, the institutions of marriage and the family, the concept of action in the Gita and the special predicaments faced by Draupadi, Arjuna and others. These studies invite the scholar to reflect afresh on the text and encourage the general reader to find in epic literature much that is relevant to life today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ganesh started questioning the reality of life and the world very early in life. He went through what many people do--get a good education (IIT, Delhi, Topper, Iran Centre for Management Studies, Tehran, an affiliate of the Harvard University Business School, MBA, with Distinction), tasted material success, went through a phase of being known and recognised, travelled the world and observed people, customs and human interrelationships. However, fundamental questions about life and its reality kept surfacing repeatedly. For what ultimate purpose does one take any action? Sensing that all the trappings of success in the world did not satisfy what he was (and every human being seemed to be) striving for, he started making serious enquiries. Using the excellent training he had received from formal education as well as what he learnt from his observations of life, he tried to find the answers. He asked many famous and erudite people, read what great thinkers had to say about the subject matter, discussed with others who too were seeking answers; all of which drove to him turn to Indian scriptures, sastra. He followed it up until he reached a traditional guru who could unfold the secrets of the self, using the words of the sastra. He spent three and a half years living with and learning from his guru, Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswati at a gurukulam (a traditional place of learning where students live with the guru) in Anaikatti in Southern India. Ganesh now lives a life of study and teaching, and helping anyone who approaches him with a problem, or with a commitment to learn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ingenious ways dilemmas are addressed in non-Western traditions Dilemmas explores some of the most pressing existential problems of our times, from climate change, political conflict, and social injustice, to balancing one’s own needs against those of others. Pushing back against the tendency to think of dilemmas as clear-cut binary choices, renowned anthropologist Michael Jackson shows us some of the ingenious ways that dilemmas are addressed in non-Western thought and oral traditions, as well as in Western philosophy. Drawing on examples from myth, literature, and his extensive ethnographic fieldwork in West Africa and Aboriginal Australia, each of thirteen chapters examines a particular dilemma and how it is experienced, circumvented, or reimagined. From the struggles of the Aboriginal people of Central Australia for land rights to Walter Benjamin’s harrowing journey across the Pyrenees as he fled German-occupied France in 1940; from the story of a suburban family in Aotearoa New Zealand adjusting to life in a commune to the dilemmas of migrants from the Global South trying to reconcile their search for a better life with their longing for home—Jackson interweaves philosophical reflections, insights from his anthropological fieldwork, and individual life stories. In striking a balance between our contradictory impulses to be both apart from and together with others, Jackson makes a case against identitarian essentialism, showing us how the oppositional thinking through which we often frame our contemporary dilemmas may be overcome.

Book excerpt: This is the story of a child whose parents, in an attempt to find solution to their problems, find comfort in alcohol which robbed them the right to their only child and their reputation. This child, being a toddler, was filled with emotional trauma and spirit of isolation, was taken to a foster home because of his parents irrational behavior which was brought about by their excessive consumption of alcohol, became a father of two adults and a subject of ridicule among his peers because of his parents addiction. He was rescued by his uncle who took him and nurtured him up to his teenage stage and sent him to university for further studies. In the university, being a vulnerable child who never experienced parental love and attention, he was desperately looking for that attention by all means. Eventually, he got it from being a potential victim of a gang robbery in the school to a partner in crime. This deprived him of his career, led him to jail, and made him a fugitive for many years. Being on the run, he got married, and his love and affection for his friend became a stumbling block in the relationship between him and his wife. His friends character is the exact opposite of his, so with the intention of starting another life of crime, he became totally transformed by his new friend who was searching for his lost sister for many years. The friend salvaged him from going to jail once again as a result of a petty crime which he committed in a corner shop. This brought them together very close that they became inseparable. On their quest to find his friends sister, he displayed his true nature of sympathy and mentorship for the vulnerable, which got them into a misfortune that ruined their hope of fighting for the freedom of the less privileged and those in captive. This misfortune disconnected him and his best friend who rescued him from the life of crime to a freedom fighter and also led them to jail and brought separation between him, his friend, and the three other friends they met during their adventure to find his friends sister.

Book excerpt: By situating Conrad's work in relation to other writings on 'primitive' peoples, John Griffith shows how his fiction draws on prominent anthropological and biological theories regarding the degenerative potential of contacts between European and other cultures. At the same time, however, Conrad's work reflected an anthropological dilemma: he constantly posed the question of how to bridge conceptual and cultural gaps between various peoples.
